Why was the work cancelled on the Combat Leader (I think I got it right) game, when it seemed well into development and so Steel Panther-like? Do you guys have any plan in the near future to either continue working on Combat Leader or start working on a new Steel Pantherish game? Is the demand for that kind of game really that low to not merit making one?

The reason given was that the game just wasn't good enough, and so it was either a case of going back to square one or abandoning the project. They chose the latter option.. probably wisely IHMO.

That's good news. Steel Panthers was great for it's time (and still has a shed load of playability) but I always found the graphics off putting. Not because they are old had, but because I found it very hard to distinguish infantry, especially in wooded areas.

So a graphics update would be more than welcome.

Thx for that wee tidbit Goblin.

Wow, that is great news.

The game could use graphic improvements such as supporting higher resolutions, but what I think it needs the most is improved AI. I'm assuming that most people play the game against the computer and play the game to enjoy those long campaigns, but the AI is too dumb as of now. It doesn't even use smoke screen before attacking, and it keeps sending in tanks into the same pit of death until there are five burning tanks in one square. Its typical strategy is to keep sending in infantry and tanks until the player runs out of ammos for the turn.

It was the megacampaigns (esp. the Quadacanal & the US Airborne ones) that kept me playing for years - I think the AI did quite well if a human designed and programed the scenario first.  And I actually think it did better with infantry than tank battles - I loved the way you could recreate a lot of the feel of Squad Leader.  I did finally give up on the game, though - too clunky, ugly, and finally a bit too predictable.  I would love a redesign of this game, or one like it, if that ever happens.  I had high hopes for Combat Leader.

If it turns out like I want it to, it might be the only game in a while that I would be willing to spend $70 for. The last time I did that was for Pacific Theatre of Operation for Super Nintendo. Anyone remember that marvelous game?

PTO II on the Saturn was by far the best of the series. IV was a real let down but playable. At the risk of sounding lame I am a huge fan of console based strategy games for their pick-up-and-play-me nature.

Quite right!

KOEI makes great games on PS2 only let down is resolution of PS2 who is now inferior console... their chinese PC versions have better resolution and some guys have translated chinese PC versions but I never had time to actually try it.

I've not played any of the PC ROTKs but of course ran the gamut of console based ones. Haven't been able to afford XI yet but hopefully soon. I don't really need the eye candy though it doesn't hurt. I'm a huge follower (and faqqer, for that matter) of the SystemSoft Alpha's Daisenryaku series of games. These are quick, hex based, TBS games set in either WWII or the modern era. Iron Storm was one such Daisenryaku translated to English on the Saturn but the XBox and soon the PS2 have English versions as well. The latter two are modern era and as I'm sure you know but I'll say for the benefit of those who don't: Iron Storm is set during WWII. Iron Storm is, for strategy gamers, the Saturn's shining moment, it's a real gem and I highly recommend it if you can find it. It tends to be on the rare side.

All that being said the PSP and DS are both region free and there are 2 Daisenryakus and 1 Daisenryaku for each of the handhelds respectively. I've translated the PSP versions and have a FAQ started for the DS version but all of them are easily accessible through trial and error. I'd recommend the PSP versions over the DS version for a couple of reasons, a bug in the DS version causing a loss of unlocked units being foremost.

Oh gads, now I've drug this topic far off course and console strategy games are CERTAINLY no replacement for the depth and awesomeness of Steel Panthers so I'll shaddup now. Cheers.

If improvements in the AI routines aren't forthcoming, any graphics enhancements are meaningless. The silent majority are solo players.

Then his future is ensured.

I also recommend Genghis Khan 2 if you haven't played that yet. Simple, but addictive.

If you guys want to start your own nostalgia thread...

Back to Steel Panthers, I would like all the engine detail of SP with the 3D isometric view of Campaign series and Squad Battles.

3D isometric view?

I much prefer the standard view of Steel Panthers. I don't think 3D anything will add anything to the game, except take up additional time in trying to create 3D models. And often, the 3D models don't look as nice, and they will up the game requirement.

The 3D views of Campaign Series and Squad Battles aren't really 3D, they're just 2D sprites that look 3D-ish...

I'm not so sure!

I really liked the isometric view display in the old campaign series, and with a "top down" view opition if the player prefers, it would cater to both new and old school SP players. IMO, isometric isn't realy "3D" as such ... is it that much of a drain on systems?

It would also add some of the "eye candy" factor to draw new players that are put off by the old school board-game style of SP.

However, I can see it being a lot of extra work to put in the game.

Really, I think that the intricacies of the SPWaW combat model preclude any attempt to render it in 3D or even pseudo 3D. It's not needed. The top-down view is fine. This is NOT an eye-candy game. The eye-candy is provided by the encyclopedia pictures. This game is about tactics, nothing more, nothing less.

I could go for isometric like HPS games do it. Plus the infantry in SPWAW are hard to see and make out the way they are all bunched up and the color of the terrain. That was my 2nd biggest gripe about SPWAW, the first of course is as with all games the AI is never intelligent enough. (I bet you thought my first gripe would be price or buggy ctd flawed out of the box issues, well those are pet peaves not 1sies and 2sies lol).

I thought that the Enhanced did a pretty good job with the infantry issue.

Enhanced was built by myself, Alby and many others, both here and at the SPWAW Depot. It includes new graphics (including updated infantry and vehicle icons, as well as terrain), sounds, encyclopaedia and picture entries, and updated and reworked OOBs. Many unit errors have been corrected, new formations added, and the OOBs in general have been "scrubbed" to comply with the game's data parameters (many of which had been ignored by previous OOB teams due to ignorance of the game code). We expanded many of the "minor" nations such as Netherlands, Philippines, Belgium, Greece and Czechoslovakia. The Dominion nations (UK, Canada, India, ANZAC) saw vast revisions of their units and formations. The US and USMC have been brought as close to the wartime TO&Es as is possible in the game structure. The DV (Decisive Version) set of OOBs makes extensive use of "native" language names for units, while the DVRN (Decisive Version Regular Name) is mainly English with a sprinkling of "native" names for flavour. The Experience and Morale ratings were bumped up to a more reasonable framework, allowing the use of "minor" nations that don't "break and run" at the first sign of combat. A few other changes were made to the mech.exe, including the removal of "casualty reports" for out-of-LOS enemy units (mostly during artillery barrages).
