This may not be a beta related error, but I am running 1.10.5 so I have put this here.

HW - Cavalry vs. Cavalry Crash

Human – Confederate AI – Union
Version 1.10.5 (Beta)
Sgt Major Advanced More Generals Richer Economy
The Coming Fury (July 1861)

This is the second time that I have had this situation happen. I have the strategic level save prior to the detailed battle of the second occurrence. Now that I know what to look for, I will do frequent saves within the HW battle to get a save closer to the occurrence.

A 3000+ Confederate Cavalry Brigade with a General attached, armed with Spenser Carbines and Dragoon tactics in line formation is attacked by a Union Cavalry brigade in column formation. On the second occurrence the Confederate was in the trees. I do not remember if that was true about the first. In both cases the Union Cavalry attacked in the right rear flank of my brigade.

I have zipped the sve and rep files from my save prior to clicking the end button and the autosave files as well.

I am going to go back in to the HW and do more saves to get one closer to the crash. Hopefully I can set up a similar situation where the AI Cavalry will attack my Cavalry.

I guess with the further erosion of units and greater loss of manpower in the new patch I am done with the game. Manpower is in short supply and now it is made to evaporate every year.

Opps wrong thread, sorry.

Huh? Were you of the opinion that camps should provide free manpower? Though they represent to some degree the return of sick or wounded men to action, even if you assume only 50% of what camps provide is entirely new replacement manpower they are still a good value. They will generally consume 1 population over a year, whereas they are generally putting out about 4-5 population worth of replacements.

The force values in the current version seem to have reached the most historical levels to date. I guess I don't see how that's a bad thing.

The 2 cavlry brigades of 18 Division in Fredricksburg are the ones to look at. The smaller cavalry brigades have seemed to have the same problem. As a note I swap the general around so that JEB Stuart and Wade Hampton are with them before I send them forward.

I have been trying to recreate the situation in HW but the randomness of the AI has made it tough. I wish I could give the AI infantry the hotkey 'F' command so I could isolate against the AI cavalry. The AI doesn't alway charge in column. So far I have only had one column charge and that was a frontal attack against the smaller brigade (Dept of Norfolk) with breechloding carbines. The AI lost 1007 men but no crash.

I will try to do some more testing on this tonight.

I can't get any closer than this. I went back to a save near when it happened the first time. I saw the union cavalry in column near my cavalry brigades. I saved after moving the 13th Division supply but left it with some movement. On clicking pass turn, the Union 5th Div 2nd Bdge Cavalry charged in column to the right rear of Pelham's Horse Artillery. The message "Pelham's Horse Art. Holds off charge" appeared and the crash occurred.

To check if it would repeat from the save, I rebooted my machine, and started from the attached save files. The game did not go back to the 13th Division supply, but went to my cavalry which had moved prior to my save. I clicked on pass turn for each Confederate unit. The Union Infantry moved again but did not come in contact with my cavalry. Then 5th Div 2nd Bdge Cavalry charged again and the crash occured as before.

I hope this helps

One of our testers noticed that in detailed combat one or more of the Legendary Units with an 's in their name -- like Pelham's Horse Artillery -- were having their names printed incorrectly. I don't remember exactly what was wrong, but maybe this is somehow related?

Both Cavarly units were LU's with apostrophes in their names.  I am now playing a game with some non LU Cavalry.  As soon as I get them equiped with Spencers, I'll try to set up the crash situation again.

I have had this happen to me a couple times, its always been enemy cavalry charging mine as I almost never charge my cav.  Both times I got a message saying my cavalry had avoided the charge and then got a brief soundloop of neighing horses and a CTD.

Do you remember whether the attacking cavalry were Legendary Units (especially LU's with an 's in their name)?

Thanks for the report.

I know for sure one of them was Pelham's Horse Artillery. This was back when it was spelled incorrectly. I dont recall if it was Pelham's the other time or not, but I do remember that my cavalry "dodged" the charge both times before the crash.
