Another turn passes gawd this is getting tense by tomoorw the invasion TF's will be 60 miles WEST of Wake every day that passes now is a bonus !!!!

Still no sign of KB but as far as I can tell I also am unspotted.

Began the build up today I now have over 150 Superforts resting on Wakes Airfields i need opinions on targets guys.

1. Marcus escorted by P38's it may sow some confusion if Pauk mis reads my intent.
2. Tinian to start the process of creating disruption
3. Split em up accros the Marianas

I am probably in favour of 2. as 200 (at peak) B29's cannot suppress 4 AF's with masses of engineers on them and I may as well concentrate on 1 target and finish it.

I am hoping that Pauks decision to 'upgrade' all his LBA to Jacks/Georges/Tonies and Tojos is now going to come back and cause problems

Oscars may be crappy fighters but they have range to escort and transfer same with Zeros I am hoping he cannot react overly quickly or easily !!!!

Bennington and Tico arrive in 4 days and will sail at Flank speed to the sound of the Guns from San Francisco no messing straight to the fight and devil take the hindmost !!!

I agree with #2.
After what happened with PzB in the Bonins, bring the biggest damn hammer you can.

OK its over Pauk spotted me the race is on I am about 20 hexes from Tinian most of the fleet can make 4 hexes per day the rest 3 so do I split the fleet or stay concentrated it really depends on where Pauks Carriers are....

Superforts on LR Recon will light em up tomorrow and we shall see what we shall see.

1 Carrier TF will move ahead of the fleet to provide escort fighters for Wake based B29's

On day 1 my B29's aree going to hit Marcus thereafter its all about Tinian which has 20 units on it.

My hammer is actually massive for this attack over 1,000 AV of armour alone not to mention  lots and lots of infantry I must take the base quickly and get an AF if this is to work

OK for the next few weeks I will post the full combat text as we are entering a critical battle !!!

My TF is now 240 miles WSW of Wake and is heading for the Marianas intel reports 20 units on Tinian.

I am bringing 8,000 AV+ to this fight of which 1,100 is in Armour and over 300 Arty Tubes in the Arty Regts alone. In total 22 Divisions.

I figure Pauk will have 1,000 AV but may have up to 2,000 AV on Tinian so by my calculation thats a max adjusted AV of 4,000 - 8,000 if he has lvl 9 forts.

So at worst I should be able to get 1:1 reasonably quickly..

p.s. if he has more than 2,000 AV this could get interesting quickly !!!!

although with over 600 fighters with the fleet and another 150 more on the way (of which only 200 are Wildcats)

and B29's to support the attack I should be ok.....

My only advantage is that Pauk cannot envisage the size of my sledgehammer I have always kept invasion forces to about a Corps so far (and always lost) this time there are four corps and every tank in the Pacific Tinian WILL fall.

I was so tempted to go for Toyohra or HI with this armada but it was the right call not to ruin the game by going so deep....

I now have 20 subs on station or approaching the battle area I am going to send them in an arc covering the Paluas up north to Marcus.

In addition subs are ordered to the Borneo channels..

and the northern PI GAP.

Lastly but not least the Ticonderoga Battle Group will be setting sail at Flank in 2 days they will top off fuel at Wake and are sailing to the sound of the guns !!!

Another 80 Hellcats and 72 Corsairs on this group could end up being a very nast surprise when they arrive.

(A 6 CVE TG will also sail on that day but will take longer to get on station)

OK I Lost the combat replay but not much happened.

I ordered a strike on Tinian by unescorted B29's but they did not fly due to weather.

The TF is now 180 miles closer to the Marianas all else is quiet.

I have ordered the fleet carriers to sprint into escort range of Tinian and the B29's are going in again.

The invasion TF's are moving slowly ever onwards.

Sub traps are set in the channels below Borneo and above PI whichever way Pauk goes he runs the risk of a USN sub sticking a torpedo into a flattop !!!

An inner corden on 12 Boats will soon be formed covering 120 degree from the Palaus northeast

Hornet on her way back to the west coast from India for repairs is passing the Gilberts (40 sys) I have ordered her group to move north (she has 36 Corsairs and 40 Hellcats on board) I don't intend to use her as a fighting platform but if I offload her fighters to Wake they can help with replacing other groups.

p.s. raids on Palembang and Kwajalein ordered lets see if I can attrit his pilot pools. The heavy George and jack losses have hopefully caused issues with their pools over the last few weeks.

tough, I want to post on both threads badly, but since I advised you on your invasion plans I don't want to subconsciously betray anything of the current operation to anyone of you two.

Suffice to say that I think going for the Marianas is the best thing you could do in terms of gameplay... May you both enjoy the battle to come.

No issue Veiji post away I dont get paranoid that way I trust the discretion of everyone who reads both boards

I was more nervous a few days ago before he spotted me.

OK more news today.

The Sweep of Palembang looks like a success with more attrition of the George Pool I want to force him to fight so my planes will be on the move.

Also looks like my accelerated carriers didnt escort the B29's and they were massacred 40+ shot down - irritating but not end of the battle.

I have over 600 fighter with the fleet of which about 250 are Wilcats. Unlike against PZB I also have 400 Hellcats in the pool (I am trying not to use Hellcats off of all the smaller CVE's as they would have struggled for space so some Wildcats remain) The bigger Sangammon class ships have Hellcats but most are operating either 18 Hellcats with no strike aircraft to accomodate the fact that Hellcats are bigger or 18 Wildcats and 12 TBM's.

My plan is to use all the FM2's on ground attack.

Several of the escort carriers have nothing but strike aircraft this allows me to turn the 3 fleet carriers in the fightr into pure fighter platforms this fleet must operate together if the carriers react and leave the CVE's behind it will do no good as I only have 50 TBM's between the 3 Fleet and 3 Light Carriers.

This mix will adjust after Bennington and Tico get on station as they are balanced carrierd with Helldivers and TBM's backing up the F6F's and F4U's

So basically its 3 fleet carrier with 250 Fighters and 20 TBM;s and 3 Light Carriers with 60 Fighters and 30 TBM's all fighters either hellcats or corsairs

26 Escort Carriers with about 80 Hellcats I think and about 200 Wildcats plus 200 TBM's and I think about 60 Helldivers. (plus the replenishment groups)

Tico and Bennington have 100 Fighters and 80 strike aircraft and are en route.

OK the B29's did take a hit the carrier TF ended up 1 hex short unfortuantely.

This turn I have decided to hit Saipan as its appears to be where the bulk of Pauks aircraft are based.

Massed sweeps from two carrier TF's and B29's from Tinian (3 Gps can sortie 10+ each and 1 sqn 9 so I should be able to launch 40 ish superforts) I lost 50 last turn so I have downgraded and withdrawn 1 Gp to bring the others up to strength.

I need the 29's so we shall see. Also I ordered destroyers into Tinian and Saipan Harbours I want to find out how strong the MF's are and kill off any japanese transports.

More will follow as I have over 150 DD's alone in the fleet so I can afford to expend a few dealing with enemy ships.

Well today was a bit of a disaster I can see the writing on the wall as against PZB....

Unit count on Tinian is up to 23 so he is ferrying in troops

Today I lost 88 Hellcats when a sweep appeared to go wrong all in all a bad day.

Again my carriers cannot cope with LBA

My ground troops are now only 3 days from landing but KB is spotted is in the tarakan channel yup you guessed it 3 days sailing away.

Basically his AV is rising although I can probably land I doubt I could retain air superiority if his LBA is going to do what they did to me today.

Wildcats just are not up to the job I should not have been so sodding idiotic and just put Hellcats on every CVE.

I am reconcentrating the entire fleet and putting CAP up the fleet carriers will need to cover the Escort Carriers as the Wildcats on the escort carriers cannot look after themselves against Georges Jacks and Tonies.

Hellcat pool down to 208 today part of me is tempted to pull back under cover of my fleet carriers upgrade all wildcats to hellcats and come back.

But I think I am committed so I will go ahead and land but I forsee disaster already

A mistake on my part a single marine F4U Sqn (at 10% CAP) is on an escort carrier I suspect it was an error from a few days ago when I rushed a turn out before work I am not redoing the whole turn and will remove it tomorrow - I have told Pauk

ps something needs to be looked at on land combat. Mountains are just to powerfull defensively as Japan you need a fraction of the forces to hold Saipan etc because 4x defensive multiplier compared to Tinian with current mechanis attacking anywhere else than Tinian is a no brainer but with AF control being all or nothing its a nasty problem.

For sure, the main problem is that the land combat gets resolved so fast : Either the attacker gets stuck (and on an island this is death spell), or he gets 1-1 quickly and it is finished within 3-4 turns...

Therer should be a slower way of resolving the fight..

it´s "only" a 3 multiplier for mountaineous terrain, but still it is a lot. What the game needs is a stacking limit for troops, aircraft and ships!

IMO even if you bring this HUGE number of divisions it could be a problem if you don´t take the base within a couple of turns. All will depend on the number of troops Pauk will be able to bring in. If he gets up to 2500 - 3000 assault points (which is mad anyway - just like the dozens divisions you bring in ) then it could get nasty.

It seems the only real chance for the Allied is doing island hopping at a range of max. 7 or 8 hexes. Carrier supported only invasions are most times a nogo against such island chains like the Marianas. Only advances under LBA seems to bring "reasonable" results. Even if you kill 1000 Japanese planes, if you lose 250 Hellcats it will hurt you more...

I am tempted not to land forces until I force a carrier battle.

Pauk cannot have the production or reserves that PZB has it was easy for PZB to outproduce me I suspect Pauk will have more difficulty.

I am seriously tempted to do the unexpected keep my armada together and pass BY the Marianas move out towards the PI and meet KB head on sink it then turn back to fight over the Marianas....

De facto if Pauk makes it impossible in my opinion to take the Marianas I will just sail on and land the entire armada on the PI or Palaus - wherever I commit to I AM going to take an AF quickly this game depends on getting an early AF a little to much IMO.

Folks need to accept a few things about this game.

1. Land combat is all or nothing for control of the AF
2. The fact that an island is mountanous is fine but the AF is not in the mountains.
3. If it impossible to take a reasonable target then the allies will go deep and take an unreasonable one...

I guess what I am saying is making somewhere like the Marianas impregnable leads to one action by the allies and only one action - go deep to somewhere the Japanese are not that strong.

The game drives you to crazy responses. I am 100% certain that this force I have embarked could take Toyohara and end the game instead I am choosing to attack a reasonable target (with an unreasonable concentration of force) probably defended by an unreasonable force behind level 9 forts and guarded by 20,000 mines

Its just crazy !!!

Don't lose heart, you have assembled a huge sledgehammer. Bypassing Marianas with your carriers will leave your aramda unprotected from a surprise carrier raid tho.

Hmmm you may be right I suspect I should have waited another 10 days before launching this attack because now I really dont want to go in at least until Bennington and Tico have joined the fleet.

They are now 720 miles west of Pearl on a least time course for Wake...I estimate 72 hours until the TF arrives at Wake

Hornet (41 sys) has another 70 fighters on board and is in the Marshalls

With Hornet to act as a bridge between Wake and the fleet and 2 more fleet carriers on station I would feel a lot better about my ability to fight KB and LBA.

Hmmm I wonder am I better to make this appear like a feint i.e. I can send a large TF covered by Saratoga Task Group etc into the Malacca straight.

At the same time reverse course with my invasion fleet for a couple of days back into my Wake based LBA envelope...(or perhaps even better feint towards Iwo Marcus area)

What does Pauk do until I commit he won't ?

I am going to have to take on KB and LBA at some stage no choice now but if I wait 3 days before committing I will be a lot stronger and maybe able to do so.

The choices.

1. Call the whole thing off - NOT ACCEPTABLE
2. Attack as soon as possible taking whatever losses I need to from KB and LBA combined.
3. Feint lets say NE towards Marcus for 2 days until Tico Bennington and Hornet join the fleet (doubling my CV strength)

I may be being a tad silly but right now 3. is looking good because it does not totally commit me - only you and I know my troops are all prepped for Tinian Pauk may believe that I would go for Iwo or Marcus direct......

IMHO waiting would just allow pauk to pull in even more reinforcements.

Yes, agree with String here. And the unmodified AV is not everything - your tanks should make the difference in the upcoming battle. But you should start to fly ground attack missions asap, anything to disrupt the Japanese LCU's on Tinian. And no more diversions, even if Pauk does not know by know by now that your Target is Tinian, he'll certainly suspect. Hit Tinian hard with everything you have! And don't forget port attacks on D-Day -1!

OK well the invasion fleet will be 4 hexes from Tinian tomorrow with the whole fleet reunited.

I have ordered the 29's to rest for a single day to get as many repaired as possible as I want to hit the port tomorrow at Tinian (D-1) my intention is to launch mass sweeps and ground attacks and B29 Port attacks tomorrow and then send in 2 small surface TF's a bombardment TF and all the invasion TF's in a single wave on the following day.

I am scared of mines as I only have 40 ish MSW's and half a dozen DMS but it cannot be helped.

Does anyone know how likely carriers are to hit mines ?

I would be seriously tempted as my fleet carriers are relatively weak to send in the whole fleet to the Tinian Hex but I dont want to hit to many mines.

(ps re AV also dont forget I have 300+ heavy arty tubes and a LOT of AA so un modified AV is not everything)

I think all I can do is take it day by day and assess the situation to see where I stand - losing 88 hellcats was a worry but perhaps when I recombine the fleet I will end up less worried.

UBER CAP - but neccessary 450 fighters on defence not enough not enough by a long shot Pauk will tear them apart.

I have ordered a massive sweep of Tinian and 100 B29's from Wake will go in after the port the decision as to whether I go in or not will depend on my fighter losses tomorrow.

I will post the full text tonight when I get home but broadly it looks like the sweep shot down 100+ enemy fighters for the loss of 35 of mine.

Mutsu and 2 of KB's DD's ate sub launched torps which is nice

My forces are now 120 miles from the Marianas and KB is around the Paluas I assume they will refuel today so I have 1 'free' day. I could send in the ships to land tomorrow relatively risk free and then reconcentrate the day after for the carrier battle.

I need to think about this a little more.

Good to see that your subs finally do their job! Is your sub screen already in position? Should be fairly easy to cover the (potential) approaches of KB by now, anyway.

But what about putting one or two highly experienced carrier-based TBM squadrons on night attack? You should have enough of them with their fleet, and your subs may spot some targets during the night phase... But don't forget to put at least one experienced fighter squadron - Wildcat or Hellcat doesn't make a real difference in this regard - on nightfighter mission (they could at least disrupt any Japanese night bomber attacks). Just in case that Pauk tries a similar thing...

I have a Marine Hellcat NF Sqn en route its at Wake now.

I have 1 Wildcat Sqn on Night CAP now.

How much fuel will KB have a speed run from Singapore to Palua they must be on fumes by now ? I am assuming they will refuel tomorrow and then come in the day after.

So one day to land everything I can and then re - concentrate for the carrier battle.
