I'm the Allied player in campaign 42a stock vrs AI. I have the malacca straights mined in the narrowist point fairly well and heavy sub patrols on the entire length.
Rangoon just fell mainly due to supply shortages is my best guess. The IJN lost tons of ships trying to get through there between the subs, mines and to my 2 surface groups (2 bb each) and a single CV group (Formidable).
The AI seems to not put that high a priority on this area of operations, at least as far as the IJ Navy is concerned. I have expected at least a couple of CVL's to appear in the open waters West of sumatra and engage me.
It is what I would have done to open the straights up for ship movement to Rangoon. What would you japanese players do against that situation?

The straits themselves, Dive bombers. Outside that, Nells and Bettys.

With a good Japanese player, the Malacca Straits can be deadly for the allied player.

True. As soon as Japan has conquered one or two level 4 air fields in Malaya Nells/Bettys turn the straits into a death trap for Allied ships. Mining the area with subs is a good idea, though.

Hehe yeah I don't actually use the straights. Just for sub transit to the South China Sea. So yeah it's pretty much the same with the AI (deathtrap). I'm setup strong on the North end of the straights though. And the AI doesn't seem that bothered with it atm. I'm just starting a couple of TF's hdg from australia west of sumatra with AS and AD, and an AE for andaman Island. Well I thought the best counter would have been a couple of CVL's and maybe a surface group on the west side of Sumatra.
