I mean, it seems there is a discrepancy between the title of this game, that refers only to WW2, and its advertising, that says designers can set their scenarios in any time period. What's the period the game engine can realistically model?

I guess nobody really knows at this point. My personal guess is just about anything you can imagine(much depend on how you define "realistically model"), but then ofcourse, I've only been playing its predecessor. We'll just have to wait and see

The focus of Advanced Tactics is indeed on WW2. The rules, equipment and troops and scenarios are all WW2.

But it is also true AT has a build in editor that you can use to design any scenario you want.
If you would ask me what time periods can be modelled i would stick to the safe side and say the epicentre is on 1910-1960 era, but i have a very strong feeling i will be proved wrong by scenario designers.

Will AT be as flexible as PT in unit design, power, etc? Also, I am guessing that research still plays a role, like it did in PT?

If I had tons of time, I would do an Emperor of the Fading Suns conversion for the upcoming AT. If things are as flexible as they were in PT, I don't see why units couldn't be made to look futuristic and have some of their values changed. True, it might be harder to model space vehicles, but that was only 1/2 of EotFS anyway.

I just wish I had more time and was more mod savy.

I am not familiar with the game.  However, I would assume you could model space like an ocean with islands (planets).  However, you would not have any 3 D aspects (although I do not know if a space game would have this).  You could use whatever pictures you like for the units and terrain so building a 'space' feel would not be too difficult.

Sorry, but I'm still confused on this. According to the blurb "Advanced Tactics is a versatile turn-based strategy system that gives gamers the chance to wage almost any battle in any time period". According to Vic "the rules, equipment and troops and scenarios are all WW2". Point taken on the scenario editor, but then you could say much the same about TOAW (there have been Nappy and ACW scenarios for that).

What exactly IS on offer? A wargame construction kit of sorts interests me (even if all the shipped scenarios are WW2); yet another WW2 operational game does not.

Instead of hardcoding a ww2 era engine for Advanced Tactics i designed a meta engine that i used to make a ww2 ruleset.

The game comes with ww2 scenarios and this ww2 ruleset. However the editor allows you to make different rulesets. In a ruleset you can define all the graphics used, the landscapes for the hexes, rivertypes, roadtypes, troop types, combat matrixes, movement cost matrixes, researchfields, production items, etc..

Furthermore the AI is versatile, but has been optimized for the world war 2 ruleset.

Uh - what happened to the American Civil War scenario you once showed a map of?

There will be a scenariobank for extra scenarios and user generated scenarios:

So I guess it is feasable to design scenarios on say Russia VS Japan in 45 or the Japanese invasion of China? Likewise the Italians in Greece etc?

In any case, it seems a rather long period, much longer than the ww2 years. Thanks for the kind responses, I'm very curious about the game.

BTW, we're in October
