ORIGINAL: Kid I have a bit of a story behind my name. I joined the Navy in 1973. I was 17 years old and looked about 15. By the time I finished Boot Camp, AWA School and Flight Training I was 18. I made it to my squadron (VP-56) two weeks before we deployed to Sicily. During the deployment we made a mini-det to Suda Bay Crete. We managed to get one day of RR in the town and my crew decided it was time to properly welcome me and one other new guy to Crew 6. They did this by buying two bottles of wine everywhere we went, one for the crew and one for the two of us. Well after a few hours my ordnance man, a man who I came to have great respect for, decided it was time to get me a hooker. He pulled me out of my chair and said “let’s go find you a hooker.” Well, I had never seen a hooker or even thought about them so I started to ask him a lot of questions. How can you tell a girl is a hooker? What do you say to one? How much do they cost? And on and on. After a while, he stopped and looked at me with a shocked look and said “You really don’t know do you? I mean you really don’t know?” I replied that no I really didn’t. That is when he said “****, you’re just a Kid! You’re nothing but a GD Kid!” That was it, the nickname stuck. They made me put it on my Crew hat and my name tag. For seven years people only knew me as Kid. Heck, some of the new guys even believed it was my real name. There are still some people out there who call me Kid when we get together. As for what happened that day…well that’s a whole different story. ANOTHER AW! Wow , I count three of us. (You , me and ChezdaJez). I wonder how many more are lurking here?(We are insideous you know!)> Cool story!
