Diary Entry # 1
11-December-1941
Diary of Naval Aide to Admirals Markiei and Yamamoto
Lt Cdr Asami Hori

Oh, i meant to start this sooner, when the war broke out, but so much has been going on! Even though Admirals Markiei and Yamamoto believe that a war with America will be impossible, or even nearly impossible to win, they still confided in me that they knew they had no choice but to aquiesce to the governments wishes... I listen to what they say, about the "sleeping giant" across the Pacific that we have now awoken, and i must admit, i am afraid... I am even more so, because it is obvious that Admiral Markiei and Admiral Yamamato are afraid as well of America. Not much is known about Adm Markiei, who is know the CinC of the entire Imperial Navy, but it is known that he lived in America, as did Adm Yamamoto himself, and that theyve known each other awhile. When Adm Yamamto declined to accept the position of CinC Combined Fleet, i was shocked as was Adm Markiei. I was pleased though when Adm Markiei took the job after Yamamoto suggested him. I have known both men for some time, and they are no fools, they are creative and supportive, endearing of younger officers, a quality very lacking in many Japanese officers. Not only that but they know that we are not superior to other peoples, though they dont admit it, simply because theyre not popular as it is, and dont wish to be assassinated! Neither would i in fact, so i keep in stead with them. As for the war it seems to be going well, Hong Kong will soon be in hand, we severely damaged the American Fleet, and sank several of their ships, and destroyed many of their planes, but we missed their aircraft carriers in Hawaii. This greatly concerns Adm Markiei and Yamamoto, for they know that the American carriers, while in truth not as good as ours, are still dangerous. So far as we know there are only 2 of them in the Central Pacific, and perhaps 1 on the US western coast, beyond that we know nothing. I am also concerned for the health of Markiei and Yamamoto, for they have not been sleeping much. They continue to study maps and reports and the strategic situation and how to actually win this war, despite their knowledge of Americas awakening power. Oh how i would dread to be in their position! Being forced to wage this war even knowing the enormous odds against us! Ah i will write later they have summoned me...

Entry 11 December 1941
Diary of Admiral Markiei CinC Imperial Japanese Navy
Entry # 1

Oh, how i hoped never to write this diary, how i knew what would probably happen if events came to pass that would lead me to writing it... Alas those events have finally happened... The war ive been dreading for so long has broken out, and now that it has, i feel strange. I am not only afraid of what this will mean for Japan, but i feel as though a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders. How strange, to actually feel better now that the wait is over, that were in a war to the death against America, a land ive grown to love as much as Japan itself, all thoguh i can never admit it... The idea that i am causing the deaths of Americans, feels strange to me. I spent so much time in America, and it brings tear to my eyes that we must wage war on them. Ive studied for so long on how to beat them, and though i have some ideas and concepts, it will be anything but easy, in fact we will most likely fail, even if everything goes according to plan, which it most certainly wont. I havent been sleeping much, and i do not feel well, i feel dizzy. Even the fresh air on the deck of Nagato fails to make me feel better. This war certainly wont be a short 1, its going to be a long one, but i must make sure it is as short as possible. To that end, ive decided we must hammer the americans into defeat... They must suffer defeat after defeat until they either surrender, collapse, or sue for peace. Admiral Yamamoto has always said that the United States cannot be invaded, that there will be a rifle behind every blade of grass, and that we would have to march down the streets of Washington DC, and dictate peace terms in the White House! And i have to say i agree with them. We both spent a great deal of time in America. Im just glad i convinced him to become my Chief of Staff. He is in point of fact the second in command of our fleet after me. He agrees that we must hammer the americans into an unfavorable position and keep the pressure on, and crush them. They are the most dangerous and formiddable foe we have ever fought, and the most dangerous that we are engaged against... Therefore weve decided to concentrate our main efforts against defeating them... This will begin with Midway and Wake... The invasion forces have already set sail, and Nagumo is heading to rendevous with them. Hopefully we can draw the American carriers into a decisive battle, and sink them, and pave the way for further operations. Yamamoto and i believe that if we seize Hawaii, we will be much closer to defeating the americans, but such an operation would be an enormous risk... I must think on this...

HeadQuarters Imperial Japanese Navy, Tokyo
12 December 1941

A conference has been called...

Adm Markiei: Commander Hori, i believe you have details for us do you not?

Cdr Hori: Yes Admiral, i do. There has been a flurry of naval activity at Pearl Harbor, and from the Philippines, there are numerous enemy submarines being deployed in the Luzon Strait, no doubt to interdict our convoys.

Adm Yamamoto: Yes, just as we expected. They must be sunk, we should deploy ASW vessels immeadiately.

Adm Markiei: Agreed, send the appropriate orders to the convoys to detach several ASW vessels, and from Formosa as well, and to increase the ASW patrols in the area, as well as sortie additional ASW forces from the Home Islands.

Cdr Hori: Yes Admiral, i shall do so.

Adm Markiei: Asami, has there been any sign of the American carriers?

Cdr Hori: No sir, im afraid not, not a whisper.

Adm Markiei: Damn... Theyre out there somewhere, but WHERE...

Adm Yamamoto: No doubt waiting to fight another day, as i would...

Adm Markiei: As i would too my friend...
Well, Operation Wa and Mi should get their attention...

Entry 12 December 1941
Diary of Admiral Markiei CinC Imperial Japanese Navy
Entry # 2

Oh, what a day it has been! So many things going on at once! Not only that but i recieved a message from General Tojo, he wants me to take FULL command of ALL our forces, air land and sea, throughout the Empire! I nearly refused him, but knew that i should not. I dont trust anyone else to lead this war against the Allies... Except Isoroku of course. Or perhaps young Commander Hori, he seems to be a very fine officer, and we seem to have quite a few of the same views. I can tell ive surprised him be not being so formal as he expected i would. Hmmff! Well as for the war effort, action is taking place on almost all fronts, in China, we are driving against the enemys center and left flank, at Changsha and Yenen, in Malaya, Khota Bahru has fallen, and additional troops are to be landed at Songkhia, for the main drive south, Adm Kondo will bombard Kuantan tonight, and the air force will hit Singapore, and Kuantan itself. Both convoys are well on their way to Wake, as is Adm Nagumo, who will cover both the invasion of Wake and Midway, though id perfer to have Adm Yamaguchi in command. Nagumo doesnt even believe in the value of the airplane! Or the carrier! Or at least so it seems. Amazes me how he got the assignment... Hmm... Well, also the enemy is deploying so many of his submarines in the Luzon strait, i just know were going to lose a few ships, and i cant allow that. Brave men in the Allied submarines, but sadly they must die, i cannot allow them to sink our ships... I truly believe we are on the wrong side in this war, we should not be fighting the Americans... If anything we should be fighting the Nazis! Or failing that then the British perhaps, or even the Soviets, though thats unlikely to happen, even with me as Supreme Commander of all Imperial forces. To fight Russia and America? Suicidal! You dont fight Russia and America, you get Russia and America to fight each other, and destroy each other... I wonder if perhaps i should cancel the Yamato, hmm... Were going to need aircraft carriers more than battlewagons, but still she would be useful... Hmm, i shall have to think on this...

Marky, just a suggestion - if you used a few paragraphs in you're prose, it would be a lot easier to read.

Entry 13 December 1941
Diary of Admiral Markiei CinC Imperial Japanese Navy
Entry # 3

Today has been a busy day as well, i wonder if they will all be like this. Or ASW forces counter attacked against the American and Allied submarines today, they claimed a sinking on one, but im not so sure. Time will tell, but with so many enemy submarines in our waters, its hard to tell which have been sunk and which havent.

Adm Nagumo is nearing Wake, and both convoys are well on their way. But i am still undecided on the Hawaiian operation, where to strike, how, or when, but surely it must be soon before the Americans become stronger. We are taking losses against in our attack on Yenen, and our forces have arrived at Changsha, and they attack tomorrow, i hope they are successful.

SO many things are going on in this war! Our troops are advancing south into Malaya, and southwest in the Philippines. And troops are advancing all over Asia, for the attack against the left flank of the Chinese at Yenen, this will be broadened, and in conjunction with the advance on their center, should finally bring the China war to an end, and free up hundreds of thousands of Imperial troops for future operations, namely India, and the invasion of America, which though will cause heavy losses, it is the only way to defeat America...

Cdr Hori: Admiral, we are prepared to begin working out the details of our Pacific thrust.

Adm Markiei: Excellent, lets have a look...

Adm Markiei: Hmm, excellent, how long do we estimate this will take to execute?

Cdr Hori: Well sir, the smammer islands will take only a few weeks, perhaps 4 months, while the Hawaiian Islands themselves will take approximately 4-6 months, from what we estimate. But we are following your guidelines of deploying overwhelming force against each objective and not spreading our forces out.

Adm Markiei: Hmmmmm. Good. And what of the Alaskan operation?

Cdr Hori: That will take a good deal longer sir, perhaps 8 months to a year, with a conservative estimate...

Adm Markiei: How conservative Commander?

Cdr Hori: Perhaps by a few months, if we dedicate ourselves to the operation, but i would advise against trying to pull off both at once...

Adm Markiei: I agree, this will need further study Commander, but we seem to have a bit of time...

The war continues to go well for us. Changsha fell to our forces yesterday, and Yenen shall fall soon. The enemy appears to be launching a counter attack on our left flank, near Canton, so troops are being sent west to join in the defense. Later they will counter attack and meet up with the troops from Changsha, and cut off the chinese in a giant pincer, or at least attempt to do so. The Imperial Guards are advancing south through Malaya, and will soon join the attack forces there, we should have more than 50000 troops heading south down the western coast. We will land base forces at Khota Bahru, and dominate the air ovewr the peninsula.

The convoys for Wake are a few days away, Nagumos carriers will strike tomorrow and soften the island up a bit in preperation for the second invasion. Additional troops will soon land at Aparri, and drive south and west on Clark Field. Once Singapore falls the troops from the Malayan campaign will head west and cut the "Burma Road" i think they call it, and we shall encircle and crush China once and for all!

Ive been giving some thought to our future operations, and i think that we shouldnt go after every island near Hawaii, just Midway and perhaps Johnston, and bypass Palmyra. But where do we land in Hawaii? And if we truly want to win the war, should we not go for this rumored "United States" base? Surely if we invade and occupy the west coast America will sue for peace. Perhaps even if Hawaii falls to our forces they will sue for peace.

We cannot allow this to be a long war. We must strike hard, and fast. We must not hit and run we must hit and STAY. We must obliterate the US Pacific Fleet, sink their carriers, and invade and occupy Hawaii and the West coast of America. But how? Surely it would take all of our own carriers, and it would be a tremendous gamble. But the Americans will never be as weak as they are now, they will only get stronger...

Entry 16 December 1941
Diary of Admiral Markiei CinC Imperial Japanese Navy
Entry # 6

Wake island fell to our forces yesterday, though we took heavy damage to several ships. One of our freighters had to be scuttled. The troops are preparing to reembark their transports for the invasion of Midway. A convoy sailed yesterday for Rabaul, with 25000 combat troops. This should be more than enough to overwhelmn the light enemy forces there.

Yenen still holds against our forces, though reinforcements are beginning to arrive. Its only a matter of time before it falls to the Imperial Army. The Chinese seem to be launching a counter attack against our center, i am bringing sending troops to stop them. The 55th Division and the Imperial Guards have nearly reached Alor Star, once they do the British and Allied forces will be swept aside like dead leaves before an angry wind....

Entry 18 December 1941
Diary of Admiral Markiei CinC Imperial Japanese Navy
Entry # 7

Oh, Yesterday was a busy day, i didnt even have time to write an entry. After i was done reading reports and issuing new orders at the end of the day all i had the energy to do was fall into bed, i dont even remember my head hitting the pillow. Oh, what a day it was today too!

The Allies continue to hold us back at Alor Star but this will soon change as our reinforcements are beginning to arrive. Today our ASW forces sank an American submarine, or they believed it was American. And our navy bombers sank a British destroyer that had escaped from Hong Kong, she will no longer serve the British king!

The Chinese continue to somehow hold our forces back at Yenen, but this should change tomorrow as well, there are now over 130000 imperial troops laying siege to Yenen, and they attack tomorrow. We have our first airfield in the Philippines as well, at Aparri, they struck Cagayen today and destroyed several enemy bombers.

Once Yenen falls we will press the Chinese on their left flank and threaten Chungking, and once that happens the enemy will pull their forces back to defend it, which will only weaken them and allow us to easily advance and take his major cities, along, eventually, with Chungking itself.

Today there was a routine comm check with I-26. She didnt answer, the message was sent repeatedly, but she never transmitted back. its been 8 hours now and still no reply. I-26 was northeast of Pearl Harbor, searching for cripples and the American carriers. She is presumed lost with all hands. I-19 reports her float plane was lost in its recon of Pearl Harbor, but she reports that an American carrier was present, but they are unsure if it is still docked.

In China, Yenen STILL holds against us somehow, despite being outnumbered by our troops, and our troops being vastly superior to theirs, including supplies and equipment. Additional troops are being sent, and bombers will be brought up as well along with fighters. In Malaya the Allied lines are beginning to crumble under our attacks. Soon they will drive south through Malaya and take Singapore.
