Lautern
Enemy continues to pour ashore
I have little response today -just a couple of ALFs attack
However some 8 bomber squadrons are deploying, redeploying for the Timor battle, 4 of them from the kai island "fight"
A squadron of Sonias go to Dilli -cannot expect much from them

KAI island
BANZIA
island retaken, I might be losing divisions and regiments in places but the propaganda machine lets all know that this island is back in my hands

The 2 TF involved are going to babo island -so are the troops, some tankers, and fighter cover
I just wonder if i could land troops at tenibar island
I made a mistake -port attack on darwin by 44 betties -only 12 return

Wewak
snail trail -continues

sabang
Vows to fight to the end

Siagon
today a very , very good day
liberators attack -unescorted -they turn back, as the fully loaded ships depart.

Forgot to add from yesterday -shot down 19 t bolts as well attacking those poor DDs on honkers run

Overall the boundries continue to creak -I will be very careful -but i have started to fight.
The fleet will operate north of truk, looking for an opportunity.
Timor will fight -i have enough troops in reserve -it would be good to take tenibar, need 3 days to get ready I think.
My AV is 616 to his 989 at luatern, as he brings ashore yet more tanks.

well kai island might be the last good news the empire gets..........
BBs new jersy and iowa pound lautern
Cvs of the base attack a AP at Dilli -its hard to judge the enemy fleet strength -I have seen 3 CV, and 2 CVE so far identified.
With 125 HellCat on the strike , the number of CVs must be fairly big

His troops continue to come ashore at sabang and lautern
I have a terible result - the hutchinsen regiment is sunk north of Dilli -no survivors

In China I pull a nice ambush -oscars on LRCAP nock down 9 p40n on ground attack.

At wewak a CV strike!, 40 Hellcat, 40 helldiver -the 22 jack are useless.
Looks like some CVE coming to cover the next invasion.

I spend the turn plotting ship movements -going to strike Tenibar tomorrow.
Big risk!. Might get a nice catch though.
lets see.

3 Tabpub ops are on now, as I feel another invasion coming.
I wanted to get troops in to the north of wewak -suspect i am too late.
SS trident claimed sunk of saipan today
BBs valiant and Queen elizabeth sink a AK at sabang -tabpub queries this -well i must try to feed the troops, somehow.
His Cvs are of wewak -brushing aside my airforce.
Honkers hit
lautern hit -and more APs sunk trying to get in
His LBA is ranging up and down the png north coast -attacking fields, sinking barges -my jacks fight, but are being attritted quickly away, some light enemy losses being inflicted.

In thailand the last acts are beginging -more troops approaching hue -when it falls eventually, the road to saigon will be open, and bangkok garrison cut off.

nevertheless, i fight on -lots building in the background.
Operation A-GO1 forces are released, as high command feels that this op on wewak offers a lot of opportunities to hurt the allies.

Tomorrow we attack!

CAs nachi and Ashigari and 8 DDs attack shipping at tenibar -they are spotted a long way out, and the enemy reacts

The TF encounters The CA Shorpshire and CL achilles at 10000 yrds.
The engagement is brief -nachi survives a single 8" hit -shorpshire eats 2 8" hits -and achilles 1
The DDs swap shots, I have one crippled, he has one sunk

The TF goes in, encounters 4 lots of PT boats, sinks 3, loses the inevitable DD to PT (hard coded result i am convinced -it ALWAYS HAPPENS ON THE THIRD ROUND), and ops points once again expended, breaks off -the Landing craft not attacked.

dawn sees the TF still in terrible close range to tenibar -but somehow escapes harm today

dawn brings news -enemy transports at Aitape!
wewak will be cut off.
High command releases many planes from the phillipines -tomorrow we attack.
At sabang 48 Kami zekes die -for 1 hit on the renown -that was 47 misses.
better news here though, allies attack -0 to 1, forts 8
Hows that tabpub, digging out the imperial troops will be hard still.

regrettfully though the 38th division, that has not had a chance to dig in at lautern, is defeated, and Tabpub begins his climb up the ladder, and this truly is the beginning of the end.

I examine my oil, my industry -and no more ships will be produced, the oil will be used for planes only and armaments only.

troops swarm ashore at Aitape.
troops come ashore at sabang
3 enemy CAs and a fleet of DDs sink 10 Ags at wewak
Dilli is bombed from darwin
64 p38 sweep woleai -tabpub really concentrating on A/F symbols -37 oscars go up -and 32 are shot down.
bangkok is bombed 4 times
And my attacks begin
From Biak -23 zeke 8sally - 30 wildcats, 8 hellcats CAP
9 zeke lost, 3 sally lost, 5 wildcats shot down -no hits on anything
32 zeke escort 9 sally, 8 hellcat and 26 wildcats fail to stop them -2 wildcats down, no losses to me -some hits on ground troops

DD makinami crawling away from tenibar survives 2 air attacks.
DD asanagi does not.
CA nachi repeats history, rent usunder by 5 2000lb bomb hits, cursed liberators again . She will sink
-its been a long time since i lost a major ship -a long, long time.

REVENGE!!!
19 betty and 12 jack attack from holliandia -the CAs at wewak the target.
CA pittsburhg (who care how you spell it -she eats 2 torpedoes -magazine explodes, sinks -so i wont have to spell it again)
CA detroit eats a torp as well -heavy damage reported

it gets better for me

21 zeke, 4 lilly,5 jill and 5 betty encounter 24 wildcats, 8 hellcats
The zekes are 70 experience -9 wildcats, 2 hellcats go down, 4 zekes lost.
5 bombers go down, but the survivors do well
CVE natoma bay 1 torp
CVE Chenango 1 torp

The pm phase sees a heavy strike on woleai -30 francis lost on the ground, heavy strikes all up and down the coast, my PM strikes weak and pitiful
Aitape falls to the americal, 43rd division
How long before the 4 see bee units claer the jungle?
Not long

My orders are definative
Strike!
planes are coming in to holliandia, and biak
CVs are approaching biak now
2 task forces will soon be in range.

At timor I will try some desperate attacks.

And the high command holds its breath, can the allies be stopped !
This week will truly hold the fate of the empire in its hands!

yesterday evening the entire fleet, less TF 90, 89, and 1 CV arrived at a hex south of Woleai ----undetected

For myself, 2 choices -fully fuelled, no ops points expended, I can strike at the invasion of Aitape -catching several CVEs, and maybe some BBs.
Or there is TRUK -with over 200 ships reported there - no pt boats sighted in 16 days of recon, and some 200 fighters there.

I gamble that now Aitape has fallen his invasion will retire............

wrong choice in reflection, but I vow to kill an invasion before it sails........
This is the only 2nd combat report I have ever posted, as its just too huge to type and describe

A huge risk, heavy cost -but the phycological shock TABPUB will get might make it worth it
Tomorrow the BBS will go in
I have already told TABPUB that I know that there are no pt boats in truk, if I encounter any tomorrow because he has magically converted points to form them -then i will be very, very annoyed.
Normal conversion at a size 9 port -no problem -when you know the BBs are coming and YOU HAVE LEFT NO REAL NAVAL UNITS TO DEFEND, and you use points to form fleets of the buggars -thats , well, thats........

we will see.

here is the report, please, please dont just scroll over it

Still waiting for the turn
Tabpub promises that no PT boats will magically be uncrated.

This is the sort of opponent one dreams about -where the journey is always more important than the destination.

before the turn comes -Im sure going in was a mistake.................

14/4/44

well the plan was good.
the execution was terrible
half the Bbs did not engage .

The day was long -and terrible

It began with 7 DD's striking mines at Truk -yes, 7 of them!
2 immediately sank

He put hellcats on night naval attack -and havocs -and they hit more Dds
And 2 of my Ss were sunk as the great herd of ships evacuated from truk -all headed south

yamato and Mushia swept in -in two engagements sunk 4 DE/DDs, missed the A/F on the bombardment, and departed
tanaka -sans his DDs, also missed the field with 7 CA's -this was so dissapointing -I needed, really needed to close the field

All the other BBs decided to retire instead

So, dawn
CVL Ryuho was promptly torpedoed by a ss -crippled
181 zeke, 18 jill, 41 judy, 13 kate attacked
33 corsairs, 25 hellcat, 8 w/c , 21 p38 cap

158 zeke lost!
7 jill, 16 judy, 2 kate as well - he loses 8 corsairs, 5 hellcats,21 p38
I deliver a mere 5 bomb hits on a AGC, a AK, a AR, a MSW, a pg

GAWD -terrible

Then his strikes go in
173 zeke CAP -4 corsair, 4 p38,6 hellcat,25 avengers,15 helldivers
No problem i thought
28 zekes down, 20 avengers s/d, 15 h/d shot down, and the hiyo is missed

then 38 corsair, 39 hellcats, 12 wildcats ,31 p38 arrived, escorting just 11 helldivers
141 zekes on CAP -and 127 are shot down, only 20 enemy go down
just 3 helldivers attack!
Amagi -1000 lb bomb

Im sweating now!
Liberators, and mitchells -in massive numbers attack -the zuiho -and she takes nearly 60 bombs
her strike inreturn however takes out 2 Aos near kavieng

CV Hiryu strikes the wewak area -and hits 3 AK, 1lst, demonstrating what an idiot I was to strike Truk -I should have struck here!

I have no fighters left for the PM phase -so when just 15 zeke escort 97 judy, 42 jill to Truk I could hardly watch
56 judy, 35 jill lost, all the zekes.
I do hit 8 AP/AK/AR type ships, not worth it though

Another counter strike
I consider myself very lucky, what little CAP I have is destroyed, but only 5 helldivers attack
Katsaguri a 1000 lb bomb
CVL ryuho -1000 lb bomb

A terrible day
The fleet flees
I lost 7DDs today
559 a/c to his 154

nearly 1000 in two days

All but my Judy pools are empty, empty, empty -let alone how am I going to replace the pilots?

katsaguri 15/4/0
Ryuho 46/48/16
amagi 17/11/15

yamato took a torp at truk -8/1/0 -wierd, last torp she took her out of the war for 4 months

Tomorrow -well tomorrow we continue fleeing, and wondering what to do.
I do have about ten zeke groups left on the map -and plenty of judys.
Its obvious that If I tried to go against any, even 1 allied CV, it would destroy 10 of my CVs worth of planes.
I now do not have a clue what to do.

The fleet flees north -dodging SS all the way -CV Hiyo is missed

The turn is spent emptying the CVs of planes, and trying to rebuild groups.
Pools are empty
he bombs Holliandia, Timor, bangkok.
The usual stuff
2 more crippled DDs are finished off.
sabang will fall soon
Tomorrow i will try a desperate attack in china

nevertheless tomorrow i continue to fight.

CA ashigari, 5 DDs attack aitape -meet 4 PTs
Ashigari takes a torp, 1Dd takes one as well.
Crud
No hits on the PTs at all

Did i mention what I think of PTs

I deliberate at wuhan -and am smashed
7591 AV to 3607, and I suffered 8500 casos to his 500
grrrrrrrrrrr

And sabang falls today
The end begins to accelerate
Still trying to rebuild airgroups.
Torn between now filling the CVs with rookies, or using the last trained squadrons on them
Iether way, rebuilding is such a pain -fragments all over the map.

If you downgrade/upgrade the squadron, all its fragments will join the unit immedietly. I´m using it time to time to clear the mess on the map..

oh, btw, do you have some summary what you got and what you have lost in this CV raid?

Hi, nice to get a reply!

I am playing stock -pdu off -cannot it seems downgrade!

(or Im too stupid)

Lets see -just off the top of my head this little adventure cost about

8DDs
2CVLs
1CVE
and about 1000 zekes
about 300 bombers

Off the top of my head -sunk about 8-10 DD/DE
several APG/AV and other auxillaries
about 300 allied planes

so a shattering defeat really
Still got 12CV, 4cvl and 4cve -and finally restocked -last of the trained crews.

Only benefit of the action was Tabpub tells me he has ships scattered all over the place that fled -he now has to regather them for his next invasion -I think all I bought myself was 2 weeks at the most.

I am now hoping that he thinks he wont see me for several months -wrong.
This has taught me that the CVs are useless -going to use them to cover a BB run or two -then unload them i think, and go hide them somewhere in the antartic

Hi,
oh, it´s pdu off.. then you are right and it is not possible to downgrade.. you have to clean the mess in an good old fashioned way - by a million of mouse clicks..

That was an expensive adventure (sounds better then "shattering defeat" ), but you still have KB intact. You have raided enemy base with hundreds ships and planes all around and you have managed to get your ships home. Well your pilots stayed behind, but it would happen sooner or later anyway. It was a bold move and it deserved better results..
You could detach some fast carrier division and send them to raid his supply lines. With a replenishment TF and a wolfpack of glen-equipped subs. There are allways a few blind spots between enemy convoy routes, where you can park a TF for weeks, waiting for pray.. I admit the results are usually not worth of the risk, but you can say the same for most of the japanese operations in 44´. And hitting enemy where he doesn´t expect it is fun..
Could you post a strategic map, please?

been off line for 3 days, various reasons
Sorry -Im too hopeless at screen shots

Just think of an ever deflating balloon and you have the empire..........

Well today was crud -a SS gets the CVE shinyo today -near palua -it could have been worse -she had the Zuikaka in her sights at one stage...............
A turn of just re building the groups

But already the high command is thinking ahead -the AOs and what fuel i have are gathering near moriatia -and the fleet is enroute.
Operation A-go 1 is totally abandoned.
I am going to fight for Kai island, and Timor until I am brocken I think

Yes, having the carriers is still good -and this time they are stuffed with fighters -CAP for the battlewagons.
Every, and I mean every invasion tabpub parks his CVs 1 hex off the coast of the target.
Lets see if i can exploit this!

The fleet re gathers
36 kami oscars hit a CA near timor
The invasion of kai island continues
And i swing the balance of air power I have from siapan, palua, towards the battle of timor............

2 days and we go in I hope -again!

The shambles that the imperial fleet has found itself in after truk continues to have ramifications
The enmy continues to land at kai island, as I try to gather ships to the northwest
very large death star operating beside the island -and its well protected by BBs ect
Fundamentally today about 6 waves of planes of mine attacked the death star -only little packets -as Ive found that sometimes planes get through -he is running 240 plus hellcat Cap though -and nothing gets through
He pounds babo island with 100 plus raids of CV planes

Its a jap nightmare
Allied deliberate at bangkok and the forts fall to 8.
I lose the homan intersection again
And 77 B-29 hit wewak in their debut -not sure id have done that though

OK -Im trrying to get some CVs to the north west of him at kai -and trying to gather the rest of the fleet to the northeast -under a lot of CAP -at Bulla and ambonia ect.
I am thinking of throwing the fleet in anyway -if I can get it together.
I have fuel left for 3 days of fighting I think, and after that............

Im scraping the bottom of the barrell here now.

A crud of a turn
I get the fleet to one hex north of Bulla island, under some LRCAP
he moves the death star to one hex north of kai islandSome cvs of mine are 5 hexes north west, the rest still coming from palua

his CAP -368 hellcats
Overall some 120 planes go in from various places, some from the CVs, and I lose the lot
No kamis make it through iether

Fortunately no attacks on my fleet
I have 3 choices
retreat
Send in all the BBs -they might make contact
Or -stay -everything on react

I choose retreat -just too disorganised, I think tabpub will pull back as kia falls today

worst turn of the war for me
If Id chosen -stay -battle fleet on react, today would have been different
Instead i retreated, all ships making for davao for regrouping

tanaka in BB Hiei and Kongo -I left him on react -so he did

Enemy fleet has sailed north to Bulla -and tanaka intercepted it

Round 1 saw a slug fest
Hiei, Kongo, CA maya and takao, 3 dds vs
New Jersey, Iowa, 6 fletcher Dds, 2 dms
Japan gained surprise, hit the BBs fairly hard, , sunk 2 enemy dds, and a DMS
The fletchers torped both CAs

tanaka trys to escape -and runs smack into
BB penny, arizona, 2 CL, 5 DD, 2 dms
I lose a DD, the maya another torp -the cl Honolulu goes down, and so does another DMS

dawn -and the death star sinks all of tanaka s ships as they crawl north.

It could have been worse, or better -who knows.
I am in full retreat
need to come up with another cunning plan I think.
Aint got any -but i need one

Pools of all fighters except george -all empty
totally
Jills empty
Judys still ok
Most level bombers -empty

My this is fun

B-29s bomb wewak -waisted again i reckon.
The fllet refuels at davao -and sails south -with the last fuel reserves

parishimo joins the bombing list -grrrrr
His death star seems to be retiring south east back into the Timor straight.
I feel another tabpub invasion soon, as the bombing of bases on the north coast of PNG rises

bangkok is getting 300 bombers a day at the moment!

I really, really laugh at the comments on the AArs at times about japan being unbeatable, never be able to take islands ect, ect.

Here I am, with a fleet theoretically as strong as pauks -and Im almost helpless.
Why -because i have no fuel, no industry churning out zillions of planes.
Why -because Tabpub has concentrated totally on the Key tactic playing the allies

Strangle Japan
Any allied player who does'nt concentrate totally on a SS merchant war -from day one -deserves what they get.
Any one who does not defend the resource/oil centres in 42 -at all cost -deserves what they get.
tabpub did -and i captured all of them badly damaged -and now in $$ he gets the pay off.
The fleet exists -yet it is tied to davao -and 1 weeks sailing from there -thats it.

Second tactic - -preparation -.
he bombs, and bombs, and bombs
And if its an island -he raids, he raids, he bombards, he goes away, he comes back, he bombs
He pounds every base that might be flying in reinforcements -not that that happens, i have no transports left -cannot build them and fighters!

I keep looking for an opening -cannot find one

So -is the game unbalanced -only if you play it wrong i reckon

His PNG advance is typivcal today - today the death star from the south of PNG -effectively finished Biak as a base.
B 29s finished the job
Hollandia was pounded, as was wewak

So, its iether wewak, or hollandia next -probably wewak -which still has supplies, hollandia is going backwards though quick.

wewak also gets a BB visit -again

This is so hard to counter

The fleet does sail again -from davao -headed south, looking for an opening -again.

3 betties attack a DE at lea -and miss
This is the total air offensive from japan today

he on the other hand..........
b-29s hit Biak
Timor bombed
All of PNG bombed
Hollandis recieves triple dose

In China 4th or 5th battle of kaifeng is about to begin..........

The reconstituted fleet sails at cruising speed from Davao.......seeking to destroy something, anything

Today was almost amirror of yesterday.
A huge convoy battle developing along coast near Miri - losses both sides

If I ever play again as Japan from the beginning -or if you are starting up -here is how I would do it.

BIG convoys. Repeat. BIG
But only 1 escort in the convoy itself -stops ss surface attacks
Have the convoy follow a dedicated ASW group
The ss attack will get a kill -doesn't matter if you had 200 escorts -it still will get a shot in -but the asw group will get the kill back.
Other ASW groups base at key points -and use them aggressively.

The fleet comes south still - undetected so far
1 CV is headed towards soerabaya - a decoy I hope.
I want Tabpub to keep the death star west of PNG..............

On the air front, I am slowly reorganising.......some action over timor and png planned, Im not entirely doggo at the moment.

According to the pattern of war -as written loud by tabpub -another bite of PNG and Timor (kupang/Hollandia/wewak) is about to take place

The fleet is in position.
Biak today is stuffed with planes

We wait ........................

You think you are winning the SS war -another one goes down near japan -then promptly a convoy is attacked near miri -and you lose 2 loaded ships.............
Usual massive bombing of Bangkok, and Wewak recieves 30 odd superforts, .
I bomb land forces west of lautern, he smothers mine there with bombs.

The fleet is 2 days north of hollandia -waiting.
A single CV is near balikapapan -coming around as a decoy.

Mostly my turns are full of trying to get what cargo ships I have left to supplies/fuel, and the slow, slow process of rebuilding plane groups - all fighter pools still remain empty -as do most bomber pools.

Gazillions of pilots also in some groups -up to 220 at experience level 65 in one group -but only 15 fighters to share!
Tough times for herb coming up.
If tabpub just pushed the pressure a bit I would collapse -he has low losses this way, the steady bite size way - but a single attritional battle of say 3 days duration will finish me .

take your time Tabpub, take your time!

Today i lose a tanker, a AK, a AP for one SS killed, the asw war continues quite intensley
The late model PGs are killers -but a lot of mine I will never see with the reduced production.
P38 sweep biak, rack up 30 kills, leave
41 B-29 join the carnage there as well

Bangkok is a living hell as endless streams of bombers pound it.

Other than convoys I have very little to do at the moment - nearly the entire fleet is at sea in one hex, north of hollandia, waiting
Franks in 30 days -I begin to gather every Tojo unit and send them to soerabaya for training

Just reviewed them all again -and found a zero daitai experience level 65 -202 pilots
I wil move this to japan -the reserve unit for homeland defence

Lost 4 more AK to SS today -huge convoy battle near miri -and I am losing!
