In the American Civil War there were 38 Union generals killed in action and 29 Union generals who died of wounds received in battle. There were many more who were seriously wounded and recovered. There were about 70 Confederate generals who were killed during or as a result of battle. In total, about 167 generals died as a result of battle during the Civil War. There were about 1000 generals total, though many of these never served in battle, so at a minimum this represents at least a 17% casualty rate for generals in the Civil War, with the actual number of active generals probably closer to 25%. Of the 70 Confederate casualties, 6 were major generals, 3 were lieutenant generals, and 1 (AS Johnston) was an army commander. In Forge of Freedom, the play has a lot of control over how many of his generals are killed in detailed battle. If you want to preserve your generals, you can move them to units that are not under heavy fire, and take them from units that are committing to charges (which can be particularly deadly for generals). We were aware of the historical rate at which generals were killed in the Civil War, and based on reports from our testing we adjusted the percentage with which generals were killed to attempt to match the historical percentage, but much of the risk that generals face is in the hands of the player. Perhaps you cannot capture Richmond because it is not adjacent to a province you already control. That is one of the necessities for capturing a province.
