The true test of a grognard: who has played The Longest Day campaign solitaire from start to finish?

I thought I was the only idiot to play both sides of "The Longest Day". Didn't finish it, though. Got nuked by a UFC (Unidentified Flying Cat).

Oh, and Yes '61

Indeed I had the same trouble. It wasn't for trying, because I did that several times.

Used to play War and Peace, Victory Games Civil War and Empires in Arms via snail mail too. I'll never forget putting the VGCW map with all pieces on the railing around the stairwell, only to watch the cat step on the edge. Map, counters and cat all disappeared down the stairs. All I heard was the crash landing, followed by cat claws skidding on linoleum.

My biggest problem though was dust. After I trained mom not to dust my gameboards (not a pretty sight), these big games would stay setup so long that phantom dust armies would start to appear.

1959 here.

This thread brings back a lot of memories. This is the CRT from my first wargame. My parents gave me this for Christmas when I was 13, and I never looked back:
