Forget the Battleground 2d. It was not designed for play, though you can play it that way. It was designed ot give the gamer a wider look at the battlefield. The manuals stated this.

Don't confuse these games with the Tiller HPS 2d series.

Adam,

I don't think people are confusing these with the HPS titles.

Leescott,

You can find both 2D and 3D screenshots from the Battleground games on their respective Games pages (click on the Games link in the top nav bar). Also, the games are certainly playable in 2D mode - I played more than a few games of Battleground in 2D mode without any problems. In some ways, it's a clearer view of the battlefield, though not nearly as attractive.

Regards,

- Erik

Yes, as Erik says, the Battleground 3d graphics have always been stunning. But I disagree playing games these 2d. The physical hex sizes are way too small viz Tiller's HPS hex sizing.

I've only ever played the BG series in 2d.

A quick ckeck in a graphics editor reveals that the HPS & Matrix hex sizes are identical - 17 pixels on the orthogonal side.  Counter size is 1 pixel larger in the HPS system - 21 vs. 20 pixels.

The hex *size* scales with your desktop resolution (at least it did with the original games, I don't have the compilation). Just set your desktop to 800x600 and the hexes will be huge, especially if you own a large monitor like I do.

Yeah a bit of a pain, but if you have old eyes like myself then it’s worth the hassle of changing your desktop display settings.
