(Historical note: Right now, Pete Reiser is batting .343, which was his exact BA in real life in 1941.)

The next three games are with the Reds.
Saturday, June 7. Hugh Casey (4-4, 3.87) vs Bucky Walters (6-5, 4.27).

Bottom of the 3rd. 2 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd. Williams singles to deep right -- a run scores.

4th Inning. Casey gives up a 2-run HR. 2-1, Reds.

9th Inning. Eddie Joost hits a 2-run homer off of Wittig, who'd relieved Casey in the 8th. 4-1, Reds.

Walters ends up with a CG win.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, June 8. Heintzelman (4-4. 3.60) vs Paul Derringer (4-3, 3.89).

Ken gets hit hard in the 1st, and the Reds jump to a 3-0 lead. We respond with a 2-out RBI single by Williams.

It becomes 4-1 in the 4th, and 5-1 in the 5th. The Dodgers are flat -- not hitting, and performing poorly on defense. I say nothing, but give each player an accusing glare as he returns to the dugout.

Bottom of the 5th. Derringer loads up the bases, and Lavagetto smacks a single. 2 runs score. 5-3.

Hientzelman then has a horrific 6th inning -- the Reds score 5 runs. 10-3. He's finished. Fitzsimmons takes over in the 7th.

The Dodgers make it 10-5 in the bottom of the 7th.

Bottom of the 8th. Camilli hits a 3-run HR, and it's 10-8.

The Reds make it 12-8 in the top of the 9th.

Bottom of the 9th. Bob Logan now pitching for the Reds. Lavagetto hits a leadoff double. Owen bunts him to 3rd. Coscarart pinch-hits, and hits a sac fly. 12-9. Reese walks. A wild pitch is charged to Logan, and Reese moves to 2nd. Billy Cox doubles -- Reese scores. 12-10. Reiser doubles -- it's 12-11! Williams singles -- the game is tied !! Belatedly, Logan exits -- Junior Thompson is now pitching. Camilli singles! Runners on 1 st and 2nd. Musial grounds out. Amazingly, we go to extra innings.

The Reds took a 13-12 lead in the top of the 11th.

That's how it ends. Ray Starr gets the win, and Bob Chipman takes the loss. A heartbreaker for us.

While we've dropped two games, the Pirates have reeled off 9 straight wins, and are just 3.5 games behind us.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, June 9. Niggeling vs Jim Turner.

Bottom of the 3rd. Bases loaded, no outs. Cox hits a sac fly. 1-0. Reiser hits a 3-run HR! 4-0. Ted Williams then hits a 451-ft HR to CF. 5-0.

Bottom of the 5th. Runners at the corners, no outs. Camilli hits an RBI double. 6-0. 2 outs later, Lavagetto hits an RBI single. 7-0.

That was the final. Niggeling gets the CG shutout.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies beat the Pirates, making our lead 4.5 over Pittsburgh.

We face the Pirates in the next two home games.

Association note: since trading off Williams, the Red Sox have lost 5 straight games and are in the AL cellar. Boston's fans are likening this to the infamous Babe Ruth fiasco, and are calling it "The Curse of the Kid".

Tuesday, June 10. Higbe (9-3, 2.81) vs Max Butcher (9-3, 4.66).

The Pirates score first, a 2-run HR by Elbie Fletcher in the 4th.

Lee Handley hit another one in the 8th. 4-0.

Butcher and Klinger combine to get the shutout. Max (10-3, 4.39) becomes the first 10-game winner of the season
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, June 11. Casey (4-5, 3.77) vs Johnny Lanning (6-4, 2.86).

Pittsburgh scores a run in the 1st, but we come back with a 2-run homer by Reiser. 2-1, Dodgers.

Casey gives up a 2-run shot to Bud Stewart in the 4th. 3-2, Pirates.

Reese and Coscarart hit back to back doubles in the bottom of the 5th, tying up the game.

Fitzsimmons relieves Casey in the 8th, and gets into trouble, loading up the bases. He escapes and and allows only one run to score. 4-3, Pirates.

Lefty Dutch Dietz relieves Lanning in the bottom of the 8th. 1 out. Reiser singles, and steals second. Williams walks. Here comes Camilli, who hits a 3-run HR to right. 6-4, Dodgers. Then, with 2 outs, Lew Riggs hits a solo HR! 7-4.

Top of the 9th, 2 outs. Fitzsimmons loads up the bases. Wittig enters to face Arky Vaughan. He pops up -- game over. Dodgers win! Fitz gets the victory, and Wittig earns the save.

Thursday is a travel day. We head to St. Louis to begin a 12-day road trip.

St. Louis, Friday June 13. Heintzelman (4-4, 4.00) vs Curt Davis (3-7, 6.42).

The Cards jump off to a 2-0 lead in the 1st with a HR by Johnny Mize.

We come right back with a 3-run homer by Phelps in the 2nd.

Williams hits an RBI single in the 3rd. 4-2. St. Louis makes it 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Heintzelman gets an RBI single in the 4th. 5-3. The Cards narrow the gap to 5-4 in the 5th, and tie the game in the 6th.

7th Inning. Mort Cooper now pitching. Camilli hits a 2-run double. 7-5.

7-5 is the final. Wittig pitches two innings to save the win for Heintzelman. Cooper takes the loss.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, June 14. Niggeling (7-5, 4.49) vs Max Lanier (5-4, 5.29). I'm trying another experiment today, moving Billy Cox over to 3B.

With 1 out in the 1st, Williams hit a line drive that struck Lanier's shoulder. Max had to leave the game, and Mort Cooper replaced him.

3rd Inning. Williams hit a tremendous 2-run HR to CF (estimated distance 460 feet!). That's his 14th homer of the season. It's also enough to knock out Cooper. Single-handedly, Ted Williams has forced two opposing pitchers out of the game. Howie Krist relieves him. Reiser's up next. He singles, and then steals second. Camilli follows with a double. Reiser scores! 3-0, Dodgers.

4th Inning. Reese makes it 4-0 with an RBI single.

Brooklyn makes it 6-0 in the 5th.

The Cardinals stage a comeback in the 8th, scoring 3 runs. The Dodgers pad their lead to 7-3 in the 9th.

Niggeling gets the 7-3 CG win over Mort Cooper.

Here are the standings:

Chicago, Tuesday June 17. It's my birthday, and for the occasion, my parents and my two sisters are at Wrigley Field today.

Heintzelman (5-4) faces Bill Lee ( 5-6).

The Cubs take a 3-0 lead in the 1st. They make it 4-0 in the 2nd.

We battle back, and tie it up with 4 runs in the 5th.

6th Inning. Reese hits a solo HR, and we take a 5-4 lead. Lee gets pulled, and Paul Erickson comes in. Musial hits an RBI single. 6-4.

9th Inning. No outs. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Heintzelman hits an RBI single. 7-4. Runners advance. Reese hits a sac fly. 8-4. That becomes the final.

Heintzelman (6-4, 4.18) gets a CG victory.

Afterwards, KG takes the family and the entire team over to Adam's Ribs at Dearborn Station. It's a birthday party to remember.

In the meantime, the Yankees have won 8 straight, and are in a virtual tie with the Tigers in the AL.

Former Yankee slugger Lou Gehrig died two weeks ago, and his buddies are dedicating this season to him.

More stat notes: Arky Vaughan of the Pirates leads the majors with a .376 BA. Tommy Henrich of the Yankees has 54 RBI. Jeff Heath of the Indians has hit 11 triples in 204 AB.

Johnny Babich of the As is 7-1, with a 1.56 ERA. Bob Feller of the Indians has 111 strikeouts in 130 innings!

Cincinnati, Friday June 20. Casey vs Bucky Walters.

Pete Coscarart breaks a 1-1 tie in the 4th with a 2-out RBI double. Musial, Phelps and Lavagetto each hit RBI singles in the 5th. 5-1, Brooklyn. The Reds made it 5-2 in the bottom of the 5th.

In the 9th, the Dodgers score two more runs. 7-2.

Casey (5-6, 3.65) gets a CG victory. The Dodgers win their 4th straight.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, June 21. Heintzelman vs Elmer Riddle.

A pitchers' duel ensues until the bottom of the 7th, when the Reds take a 1-0 lead.

Riddle (3-4, 5.29) puzzles the Brooklyn hitters, allowing just 5 hits, and gets the CG shutout.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, June 22. Doubleheader.

Game 1 . Fitzsimmons vs Derringer. Billy Cox plays 2B in this game, and bats second. This season, he has definitely been a utility infielder, having played at SS, 2B and 3B.

No score until the 5th, when Pistol Pete Reiser hit an RBI double.

The Reds take a 3-1 lead with 2 outs in the 6th. Freddie is removed, and Wittig comes in.

7th Inning. Cincy takes a 5-1 lead. Owen gets a ground-out RBI in the 8th. 5-2.

We score one run in the 9th, but Derringer (6-4, 3.95) gets a 5-3 CG win.

Game 2. Niggeling vs Johnny Vander Meer. Reiser takes a rest, and Tatum starts in CF. Cincy starts Johnny "Mutt" Riddle at C. He has a weak throwing arm.

Camilli hits a sac fly RBI in the 1st. 1-0. Brooklyn manager KG Erwin elects to take a "damn the torpedoes" attitude and play the bases aggressively.

The Reds tie it in the 2nd.

Brooklyn doesn't help its cause by committing two errors in the first three innings. The Reds score three runs in the 3rd. 4-1.

Ival Goodman hits a solo HR in the 5th. 5-1.

7th Inning. The Dodgers move to within 5-2, and with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Ted Williams makes it 5-4 with a 2-run double! Camilli is intentionally walked, again loading the bases. Medwick singles, and we're tied at 5!

Pete Reiser is then taken off the bench to hit for Tatum. He hits a 3-run double, and the Dodgers lead it 8-5! Mickey Owen singles! Resier scores! It's 9-5! That's 8 runs in the inning! Vander Meer is shell-shocked. Wasdell flies out to end it.

Kirby Higbe is brought in to hold the Reds. He succeeds.

8th Inning. After 150 pitches, Vander Meer is relieved by Bob Logan. We score five more runs. 14-5. We now bring in Bob Chipman to mop up.

9th Inning. The rout continues. We score again. 15-5.

That's the final. What a comeback for Brooklyn! Niggeling is now 10-5, with a 4.49 ERA. The surprise is lefty Bob Chipman, who has performed well despite his youth and inexperience.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our next three games are in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are in 2nd place, 5.5 games behind us.

The Pirates once agin jump to a 3-0 lead in the 1st. We score one in the 4th.

We fight back and tie it up in the 7th.

It remains 3-3 at the end of 9. Extra innings.

The Pirates win it 4-3 in the 10th. Lefty Wilkie gets the win, and Roy Bruner takes the loss.

1st Inning. Reese leads off with a triple. Cox and Reiser are easy outs, but Williams hits a solid double. Reese scores. 1-0. Camilli singles, and Williams scores! 2-0.

The Pirates come back in the 5th as Butcher hits an RBI double. 2-1. Heintzelman loads the bases and ends up with a 3-2 deficit.

An error by ex-Dodger Billy Herman allows us to tie it in the 8th. Butcher walks in two runs, and it's 5-3, Brooklyn.

Bottom of the 8th. In comes Fitzsimmons to save the game.

He blew it. He gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, and the Pirates win it 6-5. Pittsburgh completes the sweep.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team note: SP Dizzy Trout, acquired from the Tigers in the trade for Newt Kimball in early June, returns from the disabled list. He will be inserted into the starting rotation. Ken Heintzelman will now become a reliever and spot starter. Roger Wolff will be unconditionally released.

Niggeling vs Manny Salvo. The wind is blowing out to LF at 20 mph, so some fireworks can be expected today.

Sure enough, Billy Cox hits a solo HR (his first of the year) to CF in the bottom of the 1st. Musial adds an RBI single. 2-0, Dodgers.

Boston tied it in the 4th, and took a 5-2 lead in the 5th. We came right back and took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the 5th.

Salvo ran out of bullets in the 5th, but the Braves tie it up again in the 6th. Tom Earley takes the mound for Boston.

Bottom of the 7th. Al Javery now pitching for Boston. Jimmy Wasdell hits a pinch-hit RBI double off him. 8-7, Brooklyn.

8th Inning. Dizzy Trout makes his first appearance as a Dodger, entering in relief of Niggeling.

The final is 8-7. Niggeling wins, Al Javery loses, and Trout earns a save.

We have Friday off, and will travel up to Boston for the next two against the Braves.

I agree with your choice. Reiser was great in my first real player league. For some reasom the Dodgers computer AI didn't like Reiser. It kept sending Pete down to the minors, even though his play was excellent. My Browns offered a trade for Reiser and the Dodgers said yes. I couldn't stop smiling as I added Reiser to my starting line up.

Tuesday, July 1. Niggeling vs Lee Grissom. The wind is blowing out to RF at 20 mph in Ebbets today. It could be a tough day for the pitchers.

1st Inning. Joe Marty hits a solo HR. 1-0, Phillies. Nick Etten hits another one. 2-0.

Niggeling gets himself into trouble. He gives up 4 runs in the 2nd. 6-0, Phillies. We score one in the bottom of the 6th. 6-1.

Bottom of the 5th. Grissom loads up the bases, and walks in two runs. 6-3. Williams doubles, and its 6-5.

6th Inning. Heintzelman relieves Niggeling.

Philly scores one in the 8th. 7-5. Grissom hangs on to get the CG win.

In the meantime, the Pirates have lost 5 straight, so they now trail the Dodgers by 4.5 games.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, July 2. Trout vs Ike Pearson.

1st Inning. Williams hits a 2-out RBI single. The Phillies tie it in the 2nd. We respond with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. 4-1, Brooklyn.

We make it 5-1 in the 3rd. The Phils score one in the 4th. 5-2.

The Dodgers make it 6-2 in the bottom of the 4th with a solo HR by Reiser. Trout gives up 2 runs in the 5th. 6-4.

Fitzsimmons relieves Trout in the 6th. Fitz gives up 2 runs, and we're tied at 6.

Bottom of the 6th. Cy Blanton relieves Pearson. Lefty Hoerst takes the mound in the 7th.

At the end of 9, it remains 6-6. We go into extra innings.

The Phillies take a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th. Rube Melton takes over on the mound.

Bottom of the 10th. The Dodgers tie it up, and Melton loads the bases with no outs. Tommy Hughes comes in. It's a foregone conclusion -- Reese knocks in the winning run.

We win it, 8-7. Fitzsimmons earns the victory, and Melton takes the loss.

After the game, we were contacted by the Yankees' GM. They wanted Kirby Higbe. I turned him down, but proposed a counteroffer, which was accepted. So, 30-year-old OF Joe Medwick is dealt to NY in exchange for 25-year-old 1B Johnny Sturm. Sturm provides a needed backup to Dolph Camilli.

We have Thursday off.

Stat note: Pete Reiser leads the majors with 35 stolen bases. Behind him is the Senators' Mickey Vernon, who has 14.

We tie it in the 3rd with Williams' 16th HR of the season, a 2-run shot to RF.

Owen hits an RBI single in the 4th. 4-3, Brooklyn.

NY ties it in the 7th. Mace Brown relieves Hubbell.

Bottom of the 8th. The see-saw battle continues, as Lavagetto hits another RBI double. 5-4, Dodgers. Wasdell pinch-hits for Higbe. Jimmy hits a sac fly. 6-4.

6-4 is the final. Higbe is now 13-4, with a 2.63 ERA. Earl Johnson pitched the 9th and earned his 1st save. Brown takes the loss.

Amazingly, nine innings go by with no score.

Bottom of the 10th. Bill Posedel pitching for the Braves. Coscarart leads off with a double. Pete Reiser goes 5 for 5 with a single. Coscarart scores, and the Dodgers win 1-0. Freddie Fitzsimmons gets the victory, and Posedel takes the loss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, July 6. Trout vs Art "Lefty" Johnson. As yesterday, the wind is blowing in, which could make for a low-scoring game.

2nd Inning. Phelps hits an RBI double. (Manager KG Erwin: "Babe isn't much of a catcher, but damn, he can hit." ) Coscarart follows with a sac fly. 2-0, Brooklyn. The Braves have already committed two errors.

3rd Inning. Phelps hits an RBI single, after Reiser singles, steals second, advances to 3rd on a grounder, and scores the run. (Manager KG Erwin: "Pete is the best player I've ever seen. We're blessed to have him.") 3-0. Coscarart doubles, and Camilli scores. 4-0. Johnson loads the bases, and walks in a run. 5-0. Cox flies out to end the inning.

We make it 6-0 in the 6th. It becomes 7-0 in the 7th as Bama Rowell commits the Braves' 3rd error of the game. Tom Earley now pitches for the Braves. He loads the bases, and Williams hits an RBI single. 8-0.

Dizzy Trout gets a CG 8-0 shutout. He gives up 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5.

Pistol Pete Reiser goes 3 for 3, with 2 walks. He's reached base in each of his last 14 plate appearances (11 hits, 3 walks).

Brooklyn, Thursday July 10. The second half begins with a three game series vs the Reds.

Dizzy Trout (6-3, 3.71) vs Bucky Walters (10-9, 3.47). Wind blowing IN from RF at 19mph.

The Reds score the first run in the 4th.

Bottom of the 8th. Whitey Moore comes in to save it for Walters. He does so.

Walters and Moore combine to shutout Brooklyn 1-0. The Dodgers got just two hits, and Reiser's 14-game hitting streak is ended.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, July 11. Higbe (13-4, 2.63) vs Elmer Riddle (4-6, 4.83). Could be another tough day for the hitters, with the wind blowing in from CF at 11mph.

We score first. In the 2nd, with 2 outs and Williams on 1st, Phelps hits a double deep to right. Williams scores, and Phelps advances to 3rd on the throw.

Bottom of the 7th. Junior Thompson now pitching for the Reds. Camilli hits a solo HR, and it's 2-0.

Higbe gives up a run in the 8th. He's done. Heintzelman relieves him, and the Reds tie the game. 2-2.

Joe Beggs relieves Thompson. Coscarart doubles. Reiser hits an RBI single. 3-2.

Top of the 9th. Everything falls apart. Wittig relieves Heintzelman. Brooklyn commits two errors, and the Reds go ahead 5-3. That's the final.

Beggs (2-2) ends up defeating Wittig (4-1).

The races are evolving into two dogfights. In the NL, the Pirates are 3.5 games behind the Dodgers. In the AL, the Tigers and Yankees are separated by a half-game.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, July 12. Casey vs Paul Derringer.

The Reds take a 1-0 lead in the 1st. They score three more in the 3rd. 4-0.

We score one in the 3rd: a 2-out RBI double by Reese.

Fitzsimmons relieves Casey, and Freddie gives up a 3-run homer in the 9th. 7-1.

Monday, July 14. Higbe vs Vern Olsen. A warm day at Ebbets. 82 degrees.

(Manager note: my pitching staff is worn out. Higbe is at 76% effectiveness, and I have just one fully-rested reliever.)

Ted Williams hits a 2-run homer in the 1st. That's his 18th of the season.

The Cubs score a run in the 2nd. 2-1.

Higbe is struggling. He walks in a run in the 3rd. 2-2. I can see him cursing under his breath. I need him to stay out there as long as he can.

7th Inning. 2 outs, bases loaded. Billy Cox singles -- 2 runs score. 4-2. Olsen exits, Erickson comes in. Reiser singles, and it's 5-2.

8th Inning. Decision time. Who to relieve Higbe? I pick Wittig. Defensive subs also come in: Lavagetto at 3B, Johnny Sturm at 1B. The Cubs go down in order.

Bottom of the 8th. Musial hits his 1st HR of the year, and it's 6-2.

We hold on to win it, and Higbe is now 14-4, with a 2.61 ERA. Wittig faced the tying run and earns his 4th save. Olsen (6-7, 4.28) takes the loss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, July 15. Freddie Fitzsimmons vs Russ Meers. Camilli gets a day off. Sturm plays 1B.

1st Inning. Fitz loads the bases, but the defense only allows 1 run to score.

The Cubs score again in the 2nd. 2-0.

Bottom of the 2nd. Musial leads off with a triple. Sturm hits a sac fly. 2-1.

3rd Inning. Cavarretta hits a solo HR. 3-1. Hudson hits an RBI single. 4-1.

4th Inning. Fitz falls apart, and allows 3 runs. 7-1.

Casey relieves Fitzsimmons in the 6th. It only gets worse. Casey commits an error and then gives up a double. 8-1.

We come back to score two in the 6th. 8-3.

Bottom of the 8th. A solo HR by Williams. 8-4.

We score another in the 9th, but Meers gets a 8-5 win. Fitzsimmons loses.

In NY, the Giants beat the Pirates 8-7. We still hold a 2.5 game lead over the Bucs.

Trouble in the 1st Inning. The Cards take a 2-0 lead.

4 runs score in the 3rd, including a HR by Coaker Triplett. 6-0, Cards.

We get one in the bottom of the 3rd. 6-1.

The Redbirds extend their lead to 8-1 in the 5th.

7th Inning. Lew Riggs hits a pinch-hit solo HR. 8-2.

8th Inning. Once again, Johnny Wittig enters to minimize the damage. He gives up a solo HR to Mize in the 9th. 9-2.

9-2 in the final score.

Davis (5-12, 5.56) ends up with the CG win. Trout ( 6-5, 4.31) is saddled with the loss.

You're like the bugle in a war, KG! A large flag, waving in the smokey air. Whenever I lose motivation to play and report on my Avenge Buckner Association, I read your thread and you inspire me.

Now, if ony I could market "KG-in-a-Bottle"!

Thanks, FS. I am really getting immersed into this, and starting to know these guys. How could I possibly stop? They've become a virtual family. Yeah, that might sound weird, but it's true.

KG,
In my League Curt Davis is with the Dodgers (1941) and has pitched great. I had him for two seasons with my Yanks. The Dodgers talked me out of him for "I can't remember who". Any way I got two very strong years from him and he's helped the Dodgers get into three Championships.
I read every thing.
Don

Friday, July 18. Niggeling vs Lon Warneke. Due to a storm in the Atlantic, it's a cool day. 70 degrees, wind blowing in from RF.

Bottom of the 3rd. Reiser drives in a run on a grounder. 1-0.

The Cardinals tie it in the 5th, and take a 2-1 lead in the 6th.

They score two more in the 7th. 4-1.

Bottom of the 8th. Reiser doubles! Williams hits a HR! It's 4-3.

Bottom of the 9th. Sam Nahem comes in to try to save it for Warneke. Mickey Owen triples! Pinch-hitter Jimmy Wasdell flies out. Owen holds. Reese hits deep to center, and Owen dashes for the plate. He's thrown out! The Cardinals win it 4-3.

Warneke wins, Niggeling loses, and Nahem earns the save.

The Pirates beat the Braves, and gain a game. They are one game behind us, and guess who's coming to town?

That's right -- the Bucs next visit Ebbets Field for a three game series. Saturday night's game will no doubt be a sellout.

(Note: guys, thanks for reading. I had NO clue that this kind of drama would be happening. I will play it out tomorrow evening. The first game will be Kirby Higbe (14-4, 2.61) vs Max Butcher (15-5, 4.19) )
