Prior to v1.02, I played on a random map that had my only city inland on an island. Then no other cities were coast cities. So I had to use paratroopers. I did this first on a small island to capture a port city, it worked very well once I landed enough paratroopers. Then they started to lose supply so I used the same transport planes to do supply drops. So, this was an awesome airborne operation! I kind of like having a single city on an island with no others on the coast to be forced to use paratroopers. It is the only way of expansion. I did surrender this game when the AI started getting too powerful but this airborne op was fun in the beginning.

Yep, paras are fun to expand very fast in random games. A bit gamey, and the IA can't cope !

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any possibility of airtransport for units (from base to base), only supply.
Another thing that would be nice is to have some paradroppable support wepons (inf guns, mortars, MGs), to give some more punch to the paras. Historically they had that.

Air transport is definitely possible when the target base has a airfield.
But the target base has to be your own, not a enemy base.

Adding punch to paras ? This would make them a bit too powerful, or ?
As they are now it´s often hard enough. MG´s to paratroopers.....why not a few jeeps and
maybe light tanks ?
How do you want to fight them ? A enemy drops them onto your supply lines behind your front
and you have to reopen the lines fast. How do you want to fight them with such a support ?
Any ideas ?

+1.
A paradrop can be a veeeeeeeeeeeeery nasty thing to deal with for the unfortunate victim, even when you play with it against a human opponent. IMHO, the actual balance is fine.
Such sneaky operations HAVE to be somehow difficult. If not, where would be the fun ?

Twotribes,
Yes but we'll need specific MG/Mortars unit, costing 2-3 times more than standard (as paras do), else evrything and his mother would be paradropped !

Seille,
How do you embark units on planes if they'aren't paras ? Still use the paradrop button but answer "no" to the paradrop question ?
I've been puzzled by this...

Do not say no, it will cancel the request, I assume that it will allow non para units on but will not let you send them anywhere but another airfield capable hex?

Well ya, you do that by creating a new unit and making it para capable and setting research and production costs as well as the research tree. I made marines but don't have them quite where I want them yet.

Maybe someone needs to build gliders so we can land small AT guns and jeeps like in Market Garden.....

You could make units able to be transportet by air. but not sure if you can make gliders that disapears when they hit the ground.

There is a command line in one edit function that has a yes no for unit destroyed on use. Not sure if that is what that does or not.

How about mines? not sure how it would work, but perhaps. I saw that as well and immediately thought of some one-time use weapon system.

The paradrop or not question you only get when you try to drop paratrooper units.
When you try to air transfer for example engineers or normal infantry you can see highlighted target destinations
in range. Only airfields or locations with airfields.
Works wonderful. All you need is air superiority

Does anywone know if there is a way to paradrop an HQ?

My basic strategey for paratroopers is to make an Airborne division, with it's own HQ unit, and 3-5 Paratroop regiments of 20 paras each. Then I drop them in a rough semi-circle around the rear-area of the front i will be attacking, to cause supply disruption and if im lucky ambush some enemy HQs. The problem is, i cant bring the divisions HQ with them, so often my HQ power is low, and i dont get the bonus.

Is there anyway to do this, or is this just an abstraction of the communication problems in an airborne drop?

I've asked for this a couple times, hopefully this ability will sneak into an upcoming patch.  Probably not a high development priority though, but we can keep hoping.

I do not know why u could not have a para capable hq, but the unit if behind lines would only give supplies based on airlifted ones

Because the engine is hard coded to not allow it.  Supplies can be airlifted or delivered by event code.
