I am playing Buzz mod v7 FITE vs "FITE master" Karri.

I am Germans, I had played a previous game against Karri as Russians and got crushed. I had played another previous game as Germans, but my opponent disappeared around turn 10.

I adopted my favorite strategy from operation Barbarossa 1941, which is to ignore North and South and make one decisive stroke towards Moscow.

The route of my main advance was through the North, through Daugapils, Velikiye Luki, Rhzev, Istra, to Moscow.

I planned on redistributing my forces so Army group north would follow the above route and ignore Leningrad entirely. Army group Center would mainly bypass Minsk and Smolensk. Army group South would be stripped of all panzer divisions and artillery regiments which would provide a reserve for my main advance.

T1-10:

My plan got off to a good start, but Karri heavily defended Minsk, so I had trouble taking it.

His first line of defense was 4 fortified divisions by Zapadnay Dvina. I attacked each division with a couple of pzgren regiments, artillery, and dropped brandenburgers behind the lines. I pushed through pretty easily. He funneled some odds and ends divisions to slow me down. By turn 13 I was making a preliminary attack on Moscow from the Northern direction. Several fresh pnz Divisions led the attack, pushing into the city. The last round of turn 15 I was attacking the city center itself, and only one armor brigade holding on. On turn 16 I captured Moscow.

Karri moved up many divisions and a lot of artillery to counterattack the city. For a few turns we battled it out. I had a ton of artillery to hit his stacked divisions trying to retake the city. He had a ton of artillery to hit my defending divisions. I made breakthrough east of Moscow on turn 19 and dropped paratroopers behind his arty. The next two turns his defense broke and I was able to take out many artillery pieces.

In the North I started an offensive towards Leningrad once Moscow fell. My main route of attack was up through Novgrod, but I also attack through Demyansk. I broke the Soviet defense, surrounded Leningrad, cut supplies, and as of turn 27 am attacking the city itself.

As of T27 the battle lines lie as follows:

The south I was unable to make offensive movements, basically I did not cross the border. In the North I am almost ready to capture Leningrad. His line is west of Yarslavl and Volgoda. His line rises from Odessa, along the S. Bug, through the Stalin Line, through the middle of pripet marshes, Up the Dnepr, through Smolensk. North of Smolensk it take a 90 degree turn, Running N of Vyazama and Ghzatsk. I hold Moscow, and south of Moscow is a big bulge running south adjacent to Tula. East to west the Bulge goes from Serpuchov to Kolomna, so about 12-15 hexes at its widest. I hole a couple of hexes east of Moscow along road to Gorky.

My rifle losses as of the end of turn 24 were 13,500. I think they are at about 15000 right now. Loss penalty is somewhere between 4.5-1 and 5-1. My tank losses are similarly low. Fighter losses are high however, and Karri is gaining air superiority. I estimate Karri has lost between 50,000, and 65,000 rifle squads.

As of T27 I hold Minsk, Smolensk, Moscow, and Kalinin. Leningrad will fall before mud, possible by T 28. Tula is on the front lines, but my forces there are vulnerable to counterattack because of the big bulge. Smolensk is also on the front lines, but my forces are stronger there.

I deleted most of my end of turn screens, so maybe Karri can provide some screens of the battle lines and some commentary.

I plan to try and break his battle lines in the Center before MUD, but it seems even with the early loss of Moscow and Leningrad, Karri will be in a strong position to make a good winter counterattack. If I have done my math correctly he will be at 718 rifle squads per turn if I capture Leningrad.

682 if I capture Tula, but I don't think I will as Karri has some very strong reserves there.

Right now capturing Moscow at T16 cuts soviet replacements 20%, cuts rail capacity to 6000, and brings Turkey into the war. In every other scenario a capture that early ends the game. In DNO captured after turn 30 gives germans the chance of Shock + soviet pestilence. So, while diminishing rail capacity by half is very helpful, an early capture of Moscow is not decisive.

This picture is from turn 19. You can seem my forces advancing up past Novgrod to Leningrad. I have some enemies encircled in the Valdai hills region.

In center I have taken Moscow, you can see my route of advance through Velikie Luki.

In the south the enemy is at the Stalin line and bug river, basically we are at the original borders down there.

This is turn 25, I have pushed down from Moscow towards Tula, but soviets are resisting every step now.

Leningrad is cut off now, it won't last long.

This is turn 27, Leningrad is now under direct attack.

In the center I have broken the line at Smolensk and north of Vyazma

This is turn 30.

Leningrad has fallen.

I have encircled Karri's line west of Moscow, there are two sides to the pocket.
I have enough forces to make a strong drive south, but I have only 1 turn till mud, so my plans of conquest are thwarted and Karri can make a strong new line. In version 7 of Buzz modded FITE German shock is 75 until turn 43, and soviet shock is 115 after 39, so I probably can't advance much further till next year, if at all.

As of the beginning of turn 30 German losses are 17,572 Heavy Rifle Squads.
202 armored cars, and 1323 tanks of all types. Air losses, mostly fighter losses are very heavy, and the best I can do is contest strengthening soviet air superiority.

39,703 rifle squads are in the field with a stock pile of 5193.
995 armored cars and 3094 tanks remain. Loss penalty is 5.2
Soviet losses in rifle squads are estimated at 63,962
Soviet replacement rate is estimated between 725 and 685, depending on whether he retakes Tula this turn. (and whether I did the math right)

Turns 1-20:

This has been an extremely interesting game so far. I did a lot of mistakes in the start, underestimating my opponent for one, and could see the push towards Moscow only when it was too late.

However, I am not really worried about the situation as I do still hold the South. Thanks to that I still hold I think larger than historical production. Now without the mud there might have been some really big problems, but I am trusting for the mud to come and save me so I can reconstruct my defensive lines and start preparing for the Winter offensive. Naturally main goal is to recapture Moscow so that my rail capacity goes back up...but there are other opportunities as well should I be able to concentrate my troops as I wish.

The units lost to the pockets..well I had no reserves there so I decided to buy time instead, hoping that they will slow down the breakthrough to a point where I can rebuild my line with new units.

Has your opponent been able to counter attack in the South or has your Moscow thrust eaten up all his reserves? How strong is AGS on the ground, if he can muster a strong enough force he could strike in deep. But yet again it all depends on how many losses you've inflicted on him.

Originally in the South I advanced up to Kiev, but as you can see from Karri's GIF he was advancing with his whole battle line, and I had to fall back.

Karri is attacking the South in one spot. He has concentrated about 10 arty units in one spot near Odessa and is beating up my Italian and Romanian units with them. Also he is slowly crossing some units over the river. I am preparing some units that were sitting around to deal with this. Other than that things in the South have been quiet. Moscow has definately taken up his reserves. Plus he has only 6000 rail capacity so he would have to wait for a quiet moment to start a build up in the South.

Right now the south is defended well enough to withstand a major attack. I am defending mountain passes, super rivers, the exits from pripet, and the fortified line on the border, so terrain is good. If he makes a big attack this winter or something I will see it coming from a mile away because he must march in from Stalin line. Also my rail capacity is 8000 vs his 6000. This means  I can send in 18 regiments a turn if I think an attack is coming. I think a lot of the rail lines on his side are broken from my intial advance, so he must either fix them or do without.

Wow, the South is...

From Karri's movie, it looks like there is 1 OKH unit for every 10 Soviet units.

Poland and the minor allies might fall ahead of schedule, if you ask me.

The rail lines are mostly rebuilt(was I supposed to keep that as a secret?). The Moscow thrust has indeed eaten up all reserves, mostly due to rail capacity dropping to 6000(there are lot's of untis sitting around, no point marching them anywhere). But with mud coming I should be able to concentrate the troops as I want. I was hoping I could have attacked Moscow from East and West but last 6 turns made that a distant dream. Now the only direction seems to be east. Which, if nothing drastic happens, should go just fine through attritional warfare.

If and when I recapture Moscow I should be set rather nice for continuing the war elsewhere.

That is because I bunched my units up to go around the northern end of Stalin line to avoid the mg units. If you look at the first screens where I swarm across you can see I have a force about equal to his in size.

If your supply situation in the south is stable a major offensive here could unhinge his Northern Fronts Karri. Will be interesting how this one pans out. In my game vs loveman1 Kiev has been recaptured and the South is the best bet for a moajor breakthrough, almost into Poland. will have to update AAR methinks

Yeah, yeah we'll see.

This is the front as of the onset of MUD. The bulge has been straightened out and the front line runs from the North east edge of pripet, just north of Bryansk, South of Kaluga, to just South of Tula, then back up north.

It seems to be concentrated in 2 places in the south. Just south of the Pripyet marshes, I saw some of your guys pocketed around turn 17?

Turns 21-32:
My Smolensk-Moscow front collapses, but mud arrives just in time to save me.
Turkey is being reconquered, it's is afterall part of Mother Russia. Or it will be soon. Also reached border of Bulgaria...wondering though are they Axis or not? Didn't Soviet Union historically attack them anyways? Can I do that?

Yes you can certainly attack Bulgaria!! :)

note that there's a fault in ver 7 on T40 and 41 - Buzz set Axis shock to 75 for those turns instead of 100 (I think), so we're doign a voluntary cease fire in our game.

That's a stunning advance tho!

Yes, Once I saw that Karri was moving foward, and I realized how badly my men were deployed I fell back, some crappy romanian divisions didn't make it.

"Fungwu, i admire your strategy though. Fortune, she favours the bold "

Well thank you, as I understand it, when skill is equal most FITE games end in an early deadlock, with Germans not able to penetrate the 1st soviet line. So atleast there is a strategy now to break the stalemate.

"lso reached border of Bulgaria...wondering though are they Axis or not? Didn't Soviet Union historically attack them anyways? Can I do that?"

Yes Bulgaria was AXIS, and you can attack them, but I warn you there are legions of blood thirsty bulgarian savages just waiting for some tender Russian meat....legions upon legions!

Yeah, I looked it up in the event editor, Germans get nasty shock from turn  32 till 42. Soviet shock goes to 115 I think on 39, so I will have to beg Karri not to crush me with his +40 shock.

Well then, if you pitted a horde of slavering, half man, half animal Bulgarians, vs a bunch of old Russian women, then it would be no contest.

You forget that sacred litanies have 250 AP and 70 DF, right? A bunch of slavering, half man, half animal Bulgarians with spearthrowers and copper swords would be no match for that, no?

Well, your releasing the Bulgarian savages gives karri a unit that can make faith attacks up to 5 megatons. A region up to 3 times the blast area will then be contaminated with faith until the end of the scenario.
