Is the sub part of a group or somewhere other than the very center of its own formation ? (I can't see your attachment).

Individual ships in a group can always maneuver within their formation and go in one direction to, for instance, avoid a torpedo while still generally going in another direction. This looks correct to me.

A tip: when including screenshots in a post, click "Embed picture in post". That lets people actually see what you're talking about.

On this topic is there a way to moderate speeds of ships within the formation?

Many times I'll start a game and disagree with the scenario designer's formation setup.  But as soon as I set new postions my ships go dashing off at 32 knots, alerting every sub within conceivable detection range where I am.  The only solution I have thus far is to edit the scenario to my specs before playing!

AFAIK no you cant moderate the speeds, I do understand what you mean however.

What can help sometimes is reducing the overall formation speed to 5 knots or a little under and then making the adjustment to the formation, on a FEW occasions this has kept their speed to around 19 knots insted, but perhaps this was more coincedence.

But as far as direct control no mate I dont think so.

If an enemy submarine is that close to your formation at the start of the scenario to hear the ships ramping up as you change formation, perhaps it was the designers intention that the sub was meant to find you

Sorry mate!

Nope. They'll automatically interpret your orders to change positions as being necessary 'pronto', and immediately make best speed to do so. (You'll also notice that ships in the ASW ring of your formation will alternately sprint and drift as they conduct ASW operations).

You could detach all of your ships and then bring them together in your desired setup manually and at a speed of your choosing, but this would be tedious.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Unless a sub is already fairly close by, he's probably only to get a distant CZ (convergence zone) detection.

Other option ... go with what the scenario designer intended.

Stalintc ... it seems you're sharing my frequency.

I have found over the years that I enjoy playing the scenarios a little better if I go into the Scenario Editor and tweak the game before I play it. Often I'll change aircraft load-outs, change the formation range circles adjust the ship positions and set up patrols within the formation that I deem are most appropriate. Just my thoughts!

it seems subs are very slow in changing formation

a few seconds after the screenie was taken it changed to the desired direction

point taken about the embedding

As for the map compass directions, I've been wondering this myself.  I've seen some slight variations but I wasn't close to the north pole.

I suspect that one map doesn't have the longitude splayed out and the closer you get to the pole, the more 'rounded' one of the map windows are?

The original SSW/NW comment shows something that subs have done going back to Harpoon DOS. It is less pronounced if the sub is at the center of its own formation, though. I've always chalked it up to "one of those things that computers do" and go by the Group window.

Yeah, just saw what was going on earlier.

The scenario designer had set a single sub in it's own group into the 3rd formation ring so he was not only off-center when I rt.-clicked to focus the unit window on the group but he was travelling a bit awkwardly.  Now I know.

If a submarine operating alone is positioned somewhere other than the centre of his own formation, he'll 'patrol' the sector to which he has been assigned while simultaneously moving in the direction that his 'group' (just the sub alone) has been ordered. Makes for slow, rather awkward transit sometimes.
