An UV update ????, why not incorparate this "feature" in WITP ???

Imagine: enemy Carriers sighted!!!, slow down to 15 minute turns and control your CAP/strike packages and targets every 15 minutes....

Too bad about WiR. But I am going to need that time to complete a WITP campaign.

Wonder how they're programming the "Zero Bonus" into that.

Just as I suspected.........they are going to revamp Gary's Carrier Strike but you need to incorporate into WITP not UV (why get just a smidge of the PacWar we want the whole enchilada !!)

they looked at ground combat model and decided they are not capable to do it right so WiR is off schedule and they stay with carriers battles which work fine
good decision IMO

In its' day, it was a "must have"..It allowed you to determine what your planes would carry, and if they got to the target area and did not see ships, you could make them loiter, or re-direct them to another area.(Had to be wary of fuel consumption too because (totally unlike WITP), the CS pilots would actually follow your orders, (as in real life)........
Too bad few designers have ever served in combat arms to comprehend that!

Putting it back into UV, means potentially breathing new life into it.  UV+ will likely not be just a free upgrade off the site.  It sounds like carrier strike is scenarios, and may not or have a limited campaign.  Whereas, if they build it into UV, they get the benefit of dynamic campaign, that is dependent on the players strategy.

Putting something into WitP seems to be a little more problematic, because the hexes are 2x larger (so 15 minute intervals means less), and folks have already squawed at the cost, so paying for an upgrade would just invite more moaning.

I think putting it into UV makes good business sence.

That's unfortunate about WiR tho.

Dang! I am really in the mood for a WiR game right now. Having to wait several years is gonna kill me.

The War in Russia game is using a totally different design than WitP, so putting it on hold has nothing to do with the land combat engine. The issue is that there are several new routines and a lot of new interface to write for WiR, and that's time that Keith doesn't have now. UV/Carrier Strike was a project born based on the ability of Mike and Gary to do work on it without Keith's time. They chose UV instead of WitP because of the 30 mile hexes which is much closer to the 15 mile hexes we would ultimately have in the new Carrier game. The 60 mile hexes in WitP are not good for a detailed carrier game. Some WitP features will no doubt make their way back into UV during the development of UV/Carrier Strike.

Now if they will do the same for Surface Combat, or maybe that's the next evolution.

You can try it now:

http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=177 (includes manual and 1946 addon)

It doesnt have the graphics of WITP but its still enjoyable.

It is compulsory for you! The hypotetical campaign rocks! In most occasions I finished enemy crippled carriers in surface action.

Thanks for the link you provided. Now if I may trouble someone for some tech help. When I unzip the file, I get a Cstrike.arj file. What do I do with it? I would imagine I would also need to get sometype of DOS immulator since I'm running XP?

Thanks ahead of time.

The cstrike is packed twice (propably accidently or somthing). You need to unzip the cstrike.arj too (hopefully your zip can do arjs too).

You can use vmds sound or dosbox to run it. I highly recommend dosbox because it allows you to directly slow down the game if needed. ( dosbox.sourceforge.net )

When you have the dosbox run it and then type:

mount e e:\games\strike (if your cstrike is installed on e drive folder \games\strike)
e:
cd games
cd strike
cstrike

ingame ctrl + f11 to slow down the game ctrl + f12 to speed it up

my comment was sarcastic as ground combat in witp is far below ground level and i feel its shortcomings in my PBEM

Hi all,

It would be very interesting to see how this is actually implemented!!!

The 15 minute turns means 4 turns per hour and if we use, let's say 8 hours per carrier engagement, it means that just carrier vs. carrier battle would take 32 turns alone!

I seriously wonder if UV game retrofitted with such great 2nd game pack would be playable in our lifetime (i.e. who would play so many PBEM turns)...

Well seeing as they are making all this effort on UV, perhaps some of the resultswill trickle down to WITP. At any rate, I'm assuming some work will go into the WITP A2A model...can't be too hard.

So, this isn't the "big announcement" we're waiting for in WitP, right?

How many of us that have moved on from UV to WitP will be willing to return to UV, even with the deluxe enhancements?  I don't think I will.  I much prefer the vast scale of WitP which gives players so much more room to work with and so many options.  UV was a blast, but when you got right down to it (IE, had played enough), there really weren't a whole lot of options available.  Japs either attacked through PM, through Luganville, or sat back on defense.  I don't want to go back to a more restricted game.
