Never played the boargame, many others though, and have been following this title for years. Here it is...finally...i am gonna start a game as Prussia vs. Easy Ai and see what happens...it'll prolly get ugly.
Congrats guys, you finally did it! I'm happy to report no issues on my end so far, it would be nice to toggle the music on/off or adjust the volume as well as keyboard scroll. Guns of August forced us to always use the keyboard and now its reversed...oh well...i should be used to it come sunrise.

Looking forward to hearing how you go. My hat is off to you Herr Patrol I've never played this game either but I'm going to sit on the fence to see how it pans out.

Let us know about your learning curve

Adam.

It may be weeks before i play a turn thru LOL, i'm giving up for now. I read and re-read the manual(2 1/2 hours) and tried setting up the game as Prussia(1 hour) was doing something wrong as i couldn't exit the setup phase like other posters, and finally loaded a saved setup(1 hour) and couldn't end a phase without a message that you didn't do "x" or you haven't done "y"....Krikey!
Nope, this isn't a pickup and play game...i'll have to read the manual over the coming days/weeks...i'm sure it must be worth the HUGE learning curve....right?.....

So far so good with solitaire. I'm up to 1809 as France, and just starting a new game as Prussia now that I have the rules better sorted.

I beat Austria pretty handily by 1806, and made northern Italy my doorstop. Then I went after Prussia, who was poaching some of the German territories from under me. All the while I am pestered by GB, which landed a small expedition which forced me to put off my Prussian war. That done, I proceeded into a tooth and nail battle with the Teutonic horde (now allied with Russia). I got them down to a negotiated surrender in 1809. My army had to be totally rebuilt, and I was still at war with GB and Russia (though there was now no way to get at either of them).

The chit combat system is great, and lets you feel some control over the battles. The myriad of choices for surrenders and influencing minor countries are great. I'm enjoying it greatly. Between this and AGEOD's Napoleonic game, I'm doomed.

There are a few items that need work. Mainly when I look to see who is fighting whom, everyone seems to be at war with each other with no rhyme nor reason. I was fighting Prussia, and so was GB. Seems odd. In SP, I can see that things need to be open ended, but maybe some tweaking is in order. Hopefully these things get sorted in a patch or two. Otherwise, it's a good one indeed.

Like THP, It took a long time to get the start figured out...I kept placing units but not adding units to the units, essentially...then, I couldn't figure out how to remove units...finally, I got all the units placed and started the game...did'nt look at the manual, took an hour or so...printing out the manual now!

Now that what I call a first impressions post HP!

My heart goes out to ya, man

I actually went out whilst you were in the middle of your second re-read I think and bought Civilization 4 The Complete Edition instead. I figured it'd be a while until EiA got sorted out and it'd be waiting if ever it did

I think we'll need some feedback on the EiA manaul too. It sounds like it may not be something Matrix will want to typeset in glossy ink just yet, until the FAQ starts coming in and the designers start making tweaks to their UI.

Got the game last night. I've played for about an hour. I did my first setup as Russia and then reset and did it again as I learned the interface. I'm three turns into Russia now preparing to invade Sweden.

So far it is awesome, but keep in mind that I have played the board game a number of times and own my own copy. The most difficult part is finding out how they implemented the rules that I know by heart and finding the right sequence of clicks to make it work.

It is fantastic. But the AI just can't do justice to the diplomatic side of the game. It fights pretty well, and isn't incompetent, but it can't do the wheeling and dealing that this game is all about. PBEM all the way!

Well, I think those that have played the boardgame have a definite leg up on this one.
I too am having difficulty getting started.  Have in fact downloaded the rules to Empires
in Harm and am trying to get that under my hat first so I have some basis in the basic
rules.  It's not for beginners (and believe me, I'm no beginner.....have been doing this
wargame thing since I was 16 and I'm 55 :(  now)  It does look like it will be worth
the effort though.  The diplomatic functions alone (my specialty) look incredible.
Definitely a keeper.  Don't sit on the fence. It hurts like hell......jump!!

This game comes with an online manual. You should read it but it will be confusing. A tutorial may take a lot of work.

Im an old EiA player so I just dived in.  Some of the interfaces took some figuring out, like placing commanders with units, but most of it is pretty basic.  I had no idea what the diplomatic add ons were but as I went along I began to get a feel for them.  I am going to read the manual tonight about that stuff.

One other thing that messed up my start was the change in navies.  I still do not have the facts down, but what I learned the hard way is I need to read the rules about them.  I decided to go a different approach, took Russia and created a two corp invasion force in Corfu, the Guard and Corp I.  This gave me 5g, 6c and 14I.  It took me until the second month to place my general, and the third to figure out HOW to declare war, but I had split the fleet between Corfu and St. Petersburg, so when i did declare war on Naples, I could only take one corp with me!

So I landed in Naples with the guard and held my ground while the fleet went back to Corfu to get the 1st corp, not wanting to sacrifice Guard in a big fight.  The naples army did rush me, and I Defended against Assualt, losing only one guard and breaking the enemy.  Cav pursuit was effective, and no attack followed when I landed the infantry.  I get up at 4am and it was already 10pm, so I shut down and went to bed.

I am tempted to start over and try the same strategy of expanding the empires warm ports in the south, so if I can expand into africa and move east from Tunisia, hopefully building a nice army in the med to advance on the turk from the north and south, perhaps even landing a naval invasion through the black sea, but I will need several eco phases to build the cav needed to face the Turk safely without risking losing the entire army to a single lost battle and 20c of pursuit (which I have seen before in the board game...50some Au factors disapearing in the tumble of a die roll).

So, right now I like.  I am still looking how I can see what the results of ather nations battles are, troops involved, loses suffered, etc.  Sigh, even I am gonna have to read that darn rulebook.

I dove right in having not played EiA in 17 years... but the problem I had was not the rules... but the "how to".  The manual is pretty good at explaining the rules but buried in each rule is the "how to" perform that function with the interface but it's not always obvious.  I kind of wish they had separated out or highlighted better the "how to" aspect.

Exactly, learning "how/what" to do is the biggest part of the curve. I'm just taking it in chunks, doing setup 'till i get it right...then trying to "reinforce" etc...
Learning the interface will take some commitment and i don't mean that it's bad in any way...there is alot to do, it is a boardgame after all.
