Bear in mind that this isn't an 'annex all of Europe' game -- VPs are accumulated through maintaining high political status, which can be gained through battles, winning wars, economic manipulation, making alliances, and so forth. I won my first game as France (against all easy AIs, heh) by Sep. 1813, having beaten down England, Spain, Prussia, Austria (each more than once), and never having lifted a finger against the Turks (an ally I never called), nor Russia. No need to invade for any longer than to get the unconditional, since you don't need to actually eliminate a major power by holding every single province or so forth -- just keep your political status high, and that of the others low. Mobility is also pretty decent -- most infantry corps having 3 MP, and fleets having 7. Lastly, each turn has multiple phases, and considering PBEM e-mail exchanges for each phase...
