I wore goggles and a scarf to work and sat at my desk making airplane noises all day. What did you do?

I made the coffee when I came in to the office today, like I always do. I just made it extra strong.

I listened to my collection of radio broadcasts from 07DEC41, and of course played WitP.

Never thought of it as something to be celebrated. More like a time for a moment of reflection...

I mentioned to everyone I talked with that it was Pearl Harbor day.

When I came into office this morning, I put on my Hachimaki (courtesy of the game 'Pacfic Storm' - not that I purchased it, I work for a games distributor and got it for free - the hachimaki was actually the only useful thing in the game box...) - coming from an ex-Axis country, I couldn't resist... Of course my colleagues had no clue about the historic date so I got some strange looks...

Oh, and I mentioned to everyone I talked with that there will be a big announcement!

I've been busy bugging the powers that be with AI and editor questions. Now I have the "Nose on the Wall Gang" (3 grandkids) over for a sleepover night. As for a celebration, my dad has a good friend entombed in the Arizona and I don't think it was a day for celebration, for him, for my dad, nor for me.

My magazine just published two WWII Navy articles - one about an best-selling author who was KIA when Jap CAs and a BB sank USS Gambier Bay during the Battle of Leyte Gulf (yikes, an escort carrier vs. big boys); the second about a gunnery office who served on a merchant vessel on the first convoy to Murmansk; his ship underwent 156 bombings and eventually was sunk in the river leading to Murmansk.  I wrote the second article and edited the first.  It's a heck of alot of fun to spend my work time preserving stories of our past (when I'm not playing WitP, of course).

I reflected that it would have been my father's birthday were he still alive. He was a Navy flyer in WWII but not until after Pearl Harbor. He should have graduated high school in 1941 but as a junior he got pneumonia and basically missed a whole year of school when he was a junior so he didn't graduate until 1942. He once mentioned that practically every boy in his former class (it was a small school - only about a dozen I guess) joined either the merchant marine or one of the services right after Pearl Harbor and that half of them were dead by the time he entered the Navy in October 1942.

... What did you do?

Dec 7th is my Aunt's birthday, so in her card I cut out a news clipping of the Arizona exploding w/the "day of infamy" headline.

Needless to say, we never let her forget her birthday.

Do any of you recall the photo of the B17 on the ground at Pearl with everything behind the wings missing?  Supposedly that was the first US aircraft downed by the Japanese.  One of the crew still lives in the Atlanta, GA area.  There was an lengthy article about him in yesterday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.
