I´ve seen this picture around in several places but have never heard of where it came from or how.

I´m thinking it came from some Japanese propaganda film and is staged as there is an American flag laying in the dirt. But then it looks like there is an explosion happening in the background so maybe it is the slide in a film of actual combat or something. So I´m of different opinions. A very interesting picture either way though.

Anyone know the history behind this picture?

Of course it's propaganda... And you're apparently falling for it...

Ike, as a former military journalist w/some PR experince, this photo looks like it was posed deliberately and not an actual combat photo.

Notice the almost theatrical-like expressions on these soldiers faces; and to capture these expressions, the photographer was ahead of them while they were throwing a grenade in his direction. What does that tell you?

As a photograper, I can tell you that the picture is perfectly cropped (framed) and composed, almost too good for real life. Recall that Joe Rosenthall's flag raising at Iwo pic was almost an accident as he was caught off-guard and wasn't even looking thru his view finder (no SLRs back then).

Finally, the crumpled US flag is just too convenient; it looks like a prop placed on the ground.

Ike, this photo is most probably an IJ PR fabrication; i.e., it was faked.

Yeah I´m starting to agree with some other posters and believe the Matrix forums are better left to the Yankees, their propaganda and their unique sense of insecurity.

They agreed with the suppositions in your first post so how can they be portrayed as arrogant? You asked for comment, got it and then told the people who took the time to make comment to shut the f up? I am afraid I really do not understand where all the anti-American comments come from either? I think most of the people who have participated in this thread so far are European...

Am I the only one who thinks the guy on the left has an abnormal mouth? That guy looks like he could swallow a pineapple whole.

Will that be modelled in AE?

Would that be an increased rate of supply consumption for Japanese LCU's?

I was thinking more of a foraging bonus, since it is easier to live off the land when you can swallow gigantic pieces of fruit or wood or whatever. Soo... Japanese LCU's get an automatic supply bonus of +5 in any wooden or jungle hex?

Hopefully not long till the lock comes. That Iwo Jima thread needed a lock right about on the second page. There was a higher density of insults per post than even the political opinion forum on BFC around the last US Presidential election. They even shut down the entire sub-fourm it got so bad!

Uhhh no Chad. I asked about the history behind a intersting picture and if anyone knew about it. Nothing more.

What did you and Terminus do, thinly vielded insults. I have no problem firing back so let´s just avoid any of that and not have the thread locked up. Maybe someone has some info on this picture.

Many pictures looked staged that are not. Flag raising of Iwo Jima for example.

So limit your comments to info on the picture if you have any please.

Thank you.

That picture is not "intersting", it's a poorly-made piece of propaganda. End of story.

I guess that´s a matter of opinion Terminus. Obviously the marketing people at GMT games disagree with you on what pictures people find interesting as regards to the Pacific War.

So you don´t have any info, understood.

I have no "cite", but I think it is probably a staged photo as well.

In combat, you don't want to stand in between the two opposing forces to snap a picture.

Standing in the line of sight/line of fire violates the camera warranty.

I'll bet you they don't , beyond the fact that it's not copyrighted.

Oh, i dunno... the artist/art department (if they have one) might know where it came from.
