Would it be possible for the controlled free state minors to also be shaded on the global minimap - perhaps a also lighter/darker shade than the colour conquered? It is partially for vanity and part usefulness to sew who controls which FS at a glance.

We actually already are. It may be hard to tell but the freestates are typically shaded lighter. You can right click on the mini map and set options on what to shade.
