Can I please make a plea for the channel crossing arrow to be made optional when the next set of upgrades come out ?

I've always hated this rule (which was optional in the board game) it leads to totally unhistorical play.

If nothing else, would it be viable to simply mod the map?

The map is just a Bitmap. Removing the dots indicating the crossing arrow would not make it go away.

Also, some of us like the crossing arrow. It needs to be optional not just removed. The Channel could be (and often was) crossed in small dingy type boats in the middle of the night under heavy fog. Just because it is inconvienient for Britain to be so close to France doesn't mean it can just pretend it doesn't have a soft underbelly.

I'm afraid I disagree with you. Crossing the Channel at night in a dinghy in no way corresponds with getting serious numbers of troops across in good order.

The Channel is a difficult stretch of water with awkward tides and currents and the logistics of crossing it are formidable, it is far from being a 'soft underbelly'. It doesn't help that there are no major French ports close to the narrower portion.

I don't have a problem if you like it in your games. I'm just saying I feel quite strongly that it is unhistorical and I'd vote against using it in any game I played in regardless if which country I was playing.

David

Well I had this debate with someone else months before the game got released and a channel crossing is very historical. If Julius Caesar and William of Normandy (among many others) could pull it off I am sure the militaries of the 1800s could.

Still agree with the optional, although I would include it for the above reason. Few were the wars when someone did NOT try to cross at the channel.

I think you should say "Few were the wars when someone did NOT *consider* trying to cross at the channel." I can't recall hardly any actual *attempts*. Few people have actually tried it, the level of difficulty and organisation required have discouraged most of them. Some have tried to organise it but have called it off for one reason or another.

In fact I feel the examples of Julius Caesar and William the Bastard back this up. Both their invasions were thoroughly prepared over a long period of time beforehand and in JCs case he even made specialist ships for the job (after experiencing difficulties the year before). Not exactly just popping across a crossing arrow !

C'mon guys, relax.  Nappy would just take the chunnel

I think it would be best as an option, and just to chime in, I would prefer it not be used.

Don't worry, I am quite relaxed I'm certainly not taking any of this personally. We've already established that everyone seems to agree the crossing arrow should be optional. We just seem to have moved into a debate about how realistic the idea of a crossing arrow is in the first place. I can't think of any other game I've played that has a channel crossing arrow.

Incidentally, I think there were fears during the Napoleonic wars that the French might build a tunnel under the Channel. Not, I suspect, fears that were taken very seriously however.

Option only. Dont remove it completely. Some folks might want to use it.

All England has to do is keep a fleet in that sea space. That nulifies the ability of the French to do that.

I would not play the game with an opponent that wouldn't respect the house rule.

No, I meant the house rule won't happen. It benefits 1 player out of 7 and weakens at least 2 majorly and 2 more minorly.
