Are armoured trains feasible? I'm thinking I could make a special railroad road type and have a movement type restricted only to it, will this work?

Well I tried and it works, actually it's all there, there's even a rail wav file so I guess this thread is pointless unless there are some tricks anybody wants to share :)

I think you could make a new road type as well.. called whatever , giving a certain unit type access

If you look at my Great War scenario on the scenario bank, I made an armored train (combination tank and train) and a long range rail gun (combo artillery and rail).  To make, I defined a rail movement type that was only allowed to move on railroads.

Yeah I did the same, made a railroad type and the rest was all there. :)

Well I found out that your engineers cannot build anything more than one type of road - so you either build normal roads or railroads. That's really a limitation and I hope it can be changed. For example it'd be cool if it worked like in Civ - first time you build a road in a hex it becomes a normal road, and if you build a road again over the already existing road it becomes rail.

There's no "type of engineer". There's a master setting for "engineers", they can only build one road type and you can select which one. This is pretty limiting and I hope victor fixes it.

I second that! Really needs to be addressed in future patches. This works for smaller scenarios, but definately not for bigger sized or more complex.

I'm finding this limitation a little disappointing in a big mod I'm working on.

I want my engineers to either build the standard road or a railway (it will work basically a souped up road but more expensive).

I can lay railways in the scenario starting map but is there any way to get them built during the game and still have the engineers build roads?

Well, with 6 months of silence, I doubt it will ever be addressed

Not possible with the current game engine.

I'm not sure that full railroads, which can take heavy freight, should be buildable anywhere you want anyways. I'd probably do it by having Action Cards to build the railroads between key locations.

Well, I was referring to what engineers can build in terms of roads. I have no issue with abstracting rail and road transport into a combined "rail/road" type, but it's slightly stupid that engineers are confined to one road type only, which IMHO should be addressed in future patches. My other comment was that given the silence in regards of patches since 1.20 and Vic's comments in other threads it seems AT may be at a standstill with Vic working on other projects. This would be very unfortunate...

If you have rail and roads and set engineers to road ( as they should) how do you repair a blown rail bridge?

Actually Twotribes I don't think you need to have specific rail bridges.

I've tested may railways with just the normal bridges and they seem to work fine and are repairable by engineers set to 'roads' in the Rulevars.

If anyone is in contact with Vic, would it be possible to ask for a comment from him regarding the possibility to have different types of Engineers?

If you take kind of a holistic approach, you could imagine a separate line in the SF Types property sheet where the engineering "skill" of that particular SF Type could be defined. That would give plain old infantry some limited engineering skills, while RR Engineers would be highly effective in building in repairing RR's and less effective in other areas etc etc.

What I'm afraid of is that Vic is off on another project, and AT will not develop beyond its current status. This is not saying the current is bad, only that there are still things to improve and develop that would not radically change the nature of the game. This topic is one, and the "allies cannot transfer across each others territory" another. There are probably more small things...

Hi Widell,

I am reading everything on the forums, mostly.
To be honest you are sort of right. As it is now i am working on 2 new projects. Time is short.
I added the engineers and allies can transfer to the AT to-do list though.

Kind regards,
Vic

Perfect! Good to hear there's life in AT-development, even it's in competition with other projects
