Just a friendly suggestion (since I'm enjoying this AAR so far).

I'd love a bit more commentary and less in the way of combat text. It's more fun to read what folks were thinking and then get the highlights for just the "key" battles, than it is to scan through a whole mess of combat text looking for the "good" parts :).

The reason I post all of the combat report is in many ways for my own refernce. I remove the bombing altitudes to cut it down a bit. I will try to post the highlights in bold at the top so that you can skim (or skip) the rest.

Today Clark and Tuguegarao fell leaving just Manilla and Bataan on Luzon.

In Malaya Johare Buru, Singapore, and Khoto Baru are all that remain. An attack at Khoto Baru failed to clear out the defenders. My BBs may have to pay them a visit.

Recon flights show Rangoon as empty. Either I am getting bad intel or Bill has pulled back into the jungle. SEAC Chinese forces have been spotted moving along the trail to Lashio. Should make for a good fight there.

In The way South Pacific Luganville and Efate were taken to complete the collection. Now I will have to get supplies and troops to the units there before the islands just become a big POW camp.

Overall, the Jap war machine needs to pause to catch it's breath. The massive expansion early on came at the price of running out of fuel and supplies. The fact that the AVG and B-17s have not shown themselves concerns me. Not knowing where they are is making me advance much more cautiously now.

Interesting use of your BB's at Singapore for constant bombardments, in support of the troops on Mayala, will imagine it falling much sooner. Haven't seen this done yet in an AAR. Looks as if your BB's have suffered no damage thus far, as well. Question though, have you hit any mines yet? In my limited testing at bombarding Singapore i find that not having DD's in TF's are a pretty good way of preventing mine hits. Is that what you are doing?

I have hit 2 mines so far one causing next to no damage and one landing the Hyuga in the shop with 24 sys damage and some floation damage. Due to the high concentration of Dutch subs in the area they have a light DD escort.

Singapore is pretty well wrecked so I should not have to worry about the fort level going up. Using the BBs for this means that I can use my AC elsewhere.

Most of the Malaya army is in Johare Baru so this is where the main battle will be. Singapore will most likely just be a footnote.

Noumea is captured but attacks at Manilla and Wuchow are repulsed. The over expansion of Jap indstry is going to make supplies a bit short for the next few eeks so the pace is going to slow a bit.

Bill has abandoned Rangoon and pulled back to Mandalay. With the Seac Chinese forces spotted on the move it looks like the Irawaddi river is going to be the front line for a while.

Looks like the last of the ships fleeing the PI have escaped or been sunk

I'm a bit surprised that the coastal defense guns at Singapore didn't do more damage to the bombarding ships. Wasn't it one of the most massive CD set-ups in the world at the time?

BBs are rarely engaged by coastal guns of any size in WiTP. Same goes for mines. I think it is a matter of range since BB main guns have a range of 20+ miles. It is much easier to hit a base from sea than to hit a ship from a base.

I tried bombarding Singapore with BBs and CAs in a previous game and almost got the CAs sunk.

Yes I was a bit surprised the Singapore CD guns didn't do more. Anyway, I'll be posting some thoughts and screenshots again within the next day or so.

Attack at Khota Bharu clears out the cut off defenders but the blocking force at Johore Bahru repells an attack, thus saving Singapore a bit longer. In the north, an abandoned Rangoon is occupied. Further advances may be a while as Mandalay looks well defended behind the Irawaddi river.

DDs clear out most of the Dutch PT boats defending the DEI. Now if I only had some troops to spare for a landing....

quote:

BBs are rarely engaged by coastal guns of any size in WiTP. Same goes for mines. I think it is a matter of range since BB main guns have a range of 20+ miles. It is much easier to hit a base from sea than to hit a ship from a base.

That strikes me as a problem with WitP's combat engine. Several of the guns at Singapore were BB main guns: the same 15" models found in so many of the British BB's and BC's. Effective bombardment out of the range of those would have been very difficult indeed. And while it's easier to hit a base than a moving ship, hitting something useful on the base, such as a personnel or storage bunker, is not all that easy.

I am not sure but I think the BB's range may be over the horizon. This would make it very hard for shore batteries to reply.

I am not sure but I think the BB's range may be over the horizon. This would make it very hard for shore batteries to reply.

Not if they have spotter aircraft. (Which is how the BB's often bombarded.)

As I face the end of 1941 I thought I would post some thoughts and screenshots.

General thoughts:
I'm afraid I've always been an Allied Fanboy so I don't really know the extent to which the Japanese face difficulties of supply versus expansion.

My main problem is that I am always uncertain where to counter attack for fear of getting trounced. I find it difficult to Recon areas for counterattack and fear that if I go blasting in with CV TFs or BB TFs they will just get annihilated by the superior Jap.

I never know where to stop and mount a defence - I just seem to get stamped on whatever resources I throw into the equation.

Added to this the LCUs are very fragile to start with due to ubderstrength issues. Should they be moved and then allowed to build up or should they build up before moving?

Well a few screenshots to follow that will pose questions. Any advice is appreciated and I don't mind my opponent seeing it as I'm here to learn.

The current position in Burma. I pulled out of Rangoon having got some aircraft away from there in AKs which flew in from Malaya.

I'm trying to set up a defence line using the Irrawaddy. Is this doomed to fail? I'm concerned about the Japanese ability to conduct river crossings where no roads or paths exist. I seem to have been caught out like this in a CHS game I am playing.

Seems to me that wherever you defend there are not enough troops and if you concentrate in one place the Japs will cross the river somewhere else.

Yenen has been overrun in quick order. Do I simply abandon the circled yellow area and try and consolidate elsewhere? What will happen to scheduled reinforcements?

I have to say the speed of this advance caught me by surprise.

The IJN seem to be able to go where they want. I tried to thwart the landings around Noumea but some CVs turned up.

Massive airdrop at Tarakan takes the base but fails to cause a surrender. I thought I had cut the retreat paths but trekking 600+ miles through the jungle seemed like a better option to them then a nice POW camp.

Bataan is captured ending the bulk of the organized resistance in the PI. Just 2 island bases to mop up before moving on. IJA troops are in Singapore and should take the city soon.

Despite all this success Japan is still down by over 7,000 VPs
