We have now the British torp bombers and the US aircraft available to hurt anything that is within range. As mentioned before, KB (or better say incomplete KB as Kaga and Akagi seem to be missing) has already retired as well as the IJN battlewaggons so we attack an empty convoy but CA Kinugusa and CL Yura were included there to act as a bomb magnet against LBA attacks. Well, they acted good and Kinugusa canīt be penetrated by the 500lb bombs dropped by the SBDs and TBDs. That was amazing as I thought 500lb bombs would hurt CAs in Nikmod... Even CL Yura was hit by several 500lb bombs that couldnīt penetrate the belt armor. But in the end the British torp bombers made short process of the 2 cruisers! And we bag another half a dozen transports. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Martin 139 x 14 Hudson I x 19 B-25C Mitchell x 9 B-17E Fortress x 8 Allied aircraft losses Hudson I: 1 damaged Japanese Ships AP Meizan Maru, Bomb hits 3 AK Komaki Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire AP Teikei Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire AP Keiyo Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage AP Zenoa Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire AP Niitaka Maru, Bomb hits 1 AK Ehime Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet Also in the morning my LBA from Derby is attacking an empty troop convoy at Koepang and does some damage. Iīm happy with the hit rate as Iīm used to far worse hit rates so far... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Hudson I x 9 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AP Teikei Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire AP Niitaka Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire AK Ehime Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 2 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet and some Hudsons from Wyndham join the party... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Martin 139 x 2 No Allied losses Japanese Ships APD APD-2 Aircraft Attacking: 2 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 13,84 Japanese aircraft E13A1 Jake x 8 No Japanese losses Allied Ships AK Empire Foam, Bomb hits 1, on fire Aircraft Attacking: 4 x E13A1 Jake bombing at 2000 feet a damn IJN CS is beating up some AKs carrying fuel to Northern Australia. Itīs a pity, thereīs also a 3DD, 2APD TF in the Koepang hex that would be a more valuable target but I can live with that... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Martin 139 x 8 Hudson I x 12 B-17E Fortress x 12 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AK Ehime Maru, on fire, heavy damage AP Meizan Maru, Bomb hits 9, on fire, heavy damage AP Keiyo Maru, on fire, heavy damage AK Komaki Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage AP Niitaka Maru, on fire, heavy damage AP Zenoa Maru, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Hudson I x 8 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AP Niitaka Maru, on fire, heavy damage AP Zenoa Maru, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 4 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft B-17E Fortress x 9 No Allied losses Japanese Ships DD Minazuki DD Minegumo APD APD-2 Aircraft Attacking: 1 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet only a couple of Fortresses is attacking the DD/APD TF... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77 Allied aircraft Hudson I x 6 Allied aircraft losses Hudson I: 1 damaged Japanese Ships APD APD-2 Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet and some Hudsons from Wyndham, all without success against the agile targets... what was really amazing is the fact that we lost 0 aircraft today!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 13,84 Japanese aircraft E13A1 Jake x 8 No Japanese losses Allied Ships AK Empire Lynx, Bomb hits 1, on fire Aircraft Attacking: 4 x E13A1 Jake bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 31,75 Japanese Ships AP Kasuga Maru #2 DD Isonami Allied Ships SS Silversides the sub misses... I donīt know if I can consider my Koepang operation as a success as in the end I lost the base, seeing 2 Aus bgds, half a dozen base forces and 3 small Aus inf units surrender, all in all some 30.000 troops. And I lost BC Repulse to KB. I came late with my carriers to do real damage, the 2 cruisers and the dozen transports today is a consolation prize. My carriers are now 4 hexes South of Koepang and my recon told me that there are already some 200 aircraft at the base but the base should be HEAVILY damaged. It was at 100 port, 100 airbase and 80+ airfield dam when I lost it and perhaps my eng increased the airfield damage even more. Nevertheless Hortlund has flown in an armada of fighters and probably torpedoe bombers. I told him I would be amazed if his aircraft could take off such an airfield, Iīm already amazed that they can land there. Nearly no op losses to the Japanese, WITP has something wrong here - try to land 200 aircraft at an airfield that is 80+ damaged... So I had the choice to retire my carriers to Darwin (8 hexes) where we would have also 100+ land based fighters on Cap or stay in the Koepang area to either attack more shipping OR torch the Japanese aircraft on the ground if they canīt launch. I decided to attack the airfield! I guess this is a fault and Iīm toast tomorrow but I really think it shouldnīt be possible to launch a strike from such an airfield. But probably we will see 100% of the aircraft launch in a perfectly coordinated strike... A rough guess about the Japanese losses so far: 1 CA, 1 CL, a dozen+ DDs/APDs, some 20 transports and 50+ aircraft. If I also count the 30 Nells shot down over Darwin then it would be 80+ aircraft. We lost some 30.000 men, BC Repulse, 40 aircraft and 1 sub. I would call that a real Allied disaster in the real war, as losing 30.000 men was devastating I think.
