Just curious since I've got some beat up ships what is the best rule for sending them back to Pearl?

I thought it would be good but the manual mentions they may go to Pearl but never come back. That's fine for for some of my DD's but I can't have the Enterprise vanish from my roster. Pearl is also, as I read it, the only way to swap out carrier airgroups and I would like to have Avengers but, again, I'd rather have my carriers with those groups than to lose them for 6 months back at Pearl.

Not true!  You start with TBDs and as production sends enough TBFs into the replacement pool you'll find that your AGs upgrade without you doing anything, just like the Wildcats upgradefrom 3s to 4s and Marine Wildacats to Corsairs, et al.  A ship that's pretty bad off damagewise is best sent back to Tokyo or PH, at which time they may be upgraded in addition to repaired.  It's possible that you won't get the ship back again depending on the % of ships you set the game for when you started it.

Some tips:
Any fire or water damage should be repaired before sending it back, ships slow down with fires or sections still flooded with water. This makes them arrive faster in PH and they may be repaired a little bit faster.
Any Carrier you send back should have the airgroups left in theater.

If you have capital ships sitting in PH/Japan with commitment reported as High but they won't come then they may lack escorts. The AI tends to send these ships to theatre only as a complete fleet thus CV/BB with some CA/CL and multiple DD.

If ship commitment is reported as Low or Medium then consider sending back some ship you don't really use or old types lacking AA or ASW power or are eliglibe for upgrades (AA/ASW/Radar). If you have enough medium/large AK/AP then send the small ones back, with enough AO around you may not need all the TK. Never send ML/DML back unless they are damaged, they are worth more actively mining your frindly ports (and/or enemy ones )

What is a good rule of thumb for how much damage is worth sending a ship back to Pearl for?

My rule of thumb is that more than 30% sysdamage should be sent back. If ships are damaged under 30% but have recieved critical hits and vital components are destroyed I sent them back also.

Thanks. That pretty much confirms my assessment. I have begin sending back just about everything with more than 35%.

Although, I have to admit I hung onto a carrier with 36% damage just to test how long it would take to repair it at Brisbane so I could use it as a guage to make the decision based on some real test rather than a wild guess. I was thinking it might be better three months from now to have a carrier with 20some damage in port that I could sorty in an emergency and "make do" with it like we did with the damaged Yorktown at Midway......a damaged carrier in hand is worth two in Pearl!

depending on your requirements, I tend to send back larger units (BB, CV) with 30...40, and leave tiny ones (DD, uboats, escort) with up to 50 damage at a level 9 port for repair usually. So you´re more flexible in desperate situations. Battleships took the most time to fix I´ve noticed.
Especially true for the japanese, since AFAIK they do not enjoy the bounty of any upgrades...!

Is that safe? I have been waiting until flotation damage has ben fixed in local ports before sending them back for system damage repair. Am I dragging out the repair time unneccessarily by doing this? Do ships automatically make it to Pearl no matter how high their flotation damage?

In my very uneducated opinion I do the following with damaged shipping in my UV games.  I get the damaged ship back to a port and stop the fires and bring flooding to 0.  I then, based on the level of sys damage with send the ship to a larger port for repair or even to Tokyo or PH.  If the initial port of repair happens to be Noumea, for example, and the damage level is high I just immediately send the ship to PH.  I've never lost a ship, regardless of damage levels, that I can think of on a journey to Tokyo or PH.  It'll take longer before the ship is available again after being repaired based on the damage levels.

I´ve noticed the same. You just have to care for flooding damage when your ship isn´t at Truk/Brisbane/Noumea. Otherwise you can send them instantly back. They won´t sink. It looks they were "beamed" home rather than travelling the ocean...

I never send  capital ships BB or CV to Pearl or Tokio unless they are on 50 sys damage or more, it is better to have a 16-18 knots CV´s guarding your transports than not having them around...

A CV that's damaged is a large floating VP target that is easily spotted and once it hits 40% sys damage can't even fly planes so in effect becomes a liability.

Ships w/40 plus system damage are almost half-way to being dead in the water -- do you really want to send a high-value asset w/one arm tied behind it's back into harm's way?

I'm also not sure on this but I've noticed that wounded ships seem to draw more hits than other vessels. At first I thought it was just that they drew more attacks but after running a few tests that isn't right but the % of hits on the Wasp (26 sys) compared to my other carriers was much higher.

Damaged ships are slower, less maneuverable and easier to spot (smoke) so they will draw more attention.  Imagine a ship in a night surface battle that is on fire, think she can be spotted?

Assuming those were aerial hits, it's probably because all the syst damage has compromised the Wasp's AAA, making it much more vulnerable to hits.

Figured that is was a mix of less maneuverability and less flak as Joe D suggested.
