Considering the fact that this is the "War Room" would it be possible to create stickies in this forum for each of the main basic unit types, so that we all don't have to hunt and search for tips on the employment of each type? (Run-on sentence?)

How about stickies for each of the main types:

Infantry - to include motor, mech, airmobile, parachute and amphibious
Armour
Artillery - to include AT, AAA, SAM and rocket
Engineer - to include bridging and railway repair
Aircraft
Naval Units

Have I missed any units we would like to know about?

Is anyone else interested in creating stickies of this type?

Thanks.

I'd change this distinction to run between fast and slow main line units. Armour is different- but the main distinction I make is between fast and slow units.

It'd probably be more realistic to make a single thread on employing unit types in general.

As Ben's post suggests, the catagories tend to overlap. Assuming the threads see much use at all, they'll tend to get confused, with conversations on one thread winding up discussing matters really more appropriate to another.

...Also, I can't see much point in making the threads sticky. If they actually get much play, they'll stay at near the top of their own accord, and if they don't, then we'd have the top of the column cluttered up with a bunch of threads no one is interested in.

...of course, that's what 'sticky' threads often seem to wind up being.

So then, let's call the categories:

Leg Infantry (the guys who walk)
Motorized Infantry (the guys who ride)
Airmobile Infantry (the guys who fly)

So far as I am concerned, I think the other categories can stand for now. Unless anyone else has any thoughts.

The various categories, or types, of units available in TOAW vary in the methods of employment. Therefore, as per my original suggestion, make separate threads for each in order to remain type-specific.

Then it would be up to the individual posting to keep the topic specific to the thread, and not go off on wild tangents (Defending a River Line - Case In Point). Or for a moderator to keep them on topic.

There is only so much that can be said about employment of units within the finite confines of the game engine, I will grant you that. But, I know that I have spent countless hours searching for information on specific unit employment methods within these forums, and often times, I end up reading about useless information beyond the scope of this game. (Fortifying Frozen Lakes - Case In Point). I also appreciate that eventually the stickies may get no more new posts, but that is, in my opinion, because all that can be said about a unit-type has been said.

Just because a stickie doesn't receive new posts doesn't mean that there is no longer any interest in it. If it continually receives new hits, then there is obviously interest in reading what it has to say.

I come to the War Room to find out how to employ unit x in situation y, and I am sure that newer players would also appreciate the convenience of stickies on unit employment as well. Who knows, perhaps old-timers would appreciate it too, as a kind of refresher on how to employ their units to their maximum potential, as well.

Having said all that, I guess it would be up to the remainder of the forum users to decide what's best in this regard. I am just throwing my opinion into the ring.

Thank you for your consideration.

Ugh. The trouble is that some issues apply to several or all types of units. I think you're better off with one thread.

To be honest, I'm just not a fan of the whole "strategy guide" concept. Consulting a list of recommendations from players will probably not lead you to the right decision. The best advice is in general principles: like when you're crossing the road, look left, look right and then look left again. Then think about moving.

Yeah. There was a time when I had a reputation as a pretty good player. I also had a reputation for taking a ferociously long time with my turns.

I don't think the two facts were unconnected. It's hard, but you have to keep your paws off the counters until you've considered both the tactical and logistical minutia and then looked at how those considerations relate to the big picture. Then you shove the counters you're sure about -- and look at the big picture again.

As far as 'strategy guides' go, one problem is that what works varies a lot from scenario to scenario.

Fair enough, then, as the only two individuals to reply, I guess you may be indicative of the population as whole.

Let's let this issue die.

Thanks for you input, however.
