Hi Alfred,

I have got 4 Italien units ( 2x Staffel, 2xGruppe )
3 Gruppo CT uses the cannon version of the Bf109G-6 ( R6) with good results.
18 Gruppo CT uses the normal G-6 version
101 Gruppo Bat uses the Ar2005
8 Gruppo CT uses the Centauro ( G55/I)

Some co-Axis units use some Italian A/C.....the Kroat.St./JG 1 uses the MC205,
also several other hungarian, Rumanian and Bulgerian use either their own pruduct (IAR A/C for Romania ) or Italian designs.

I have at least played 15 PBEMs as Axis and around 5 as Allied
It is hard to say which said has the upper hand right now....all differences in Allied strategy....Gavin does not go for the big pointers (CHEM,RUBBER,ARM,.....)....scorewise he is well but not really high,
but this does not matter at this stage of the war.
Gavins tactic is vs A/C production......and I am ignoring his tactic and let my units rest

I can easily stage a few big battle days right now, but is it the right time to do so....
better wait for some new Axis and Allied designs ( killing Mustang Ds that will be mean, because it will be his best escort fighter, and killing enough of them.......downgrading units is a pain )

NJG tactic......there is no tactic for them in this game....this game was meant as an in between game until the new version is on the table for Gavin.
I do not use NJ in this game very much....whatfore....the terror score is quite low and the attrition for his NIs is quite high due to AA

research......all my games with Gavin are more historically based games, The A/C will be in the frontline units around the same time as in RL......but I will not use the same A/C for the same units as in RL ( but major A/C stay major A/C - Bf109, Fw190......although I once played a game were I used only 2005 and Centauros...those designs are superior until middle of 44 )

As an experienced player, maybe you can give me an idea about how well I am doing in my ´43 long campaign against the AI...

It is now three months into the game. I am playing the Axis. Allied Victory Points have been hovering in the 14-16 range since about day 20; they are currently AS 2, Industry 5, Terror 7.
I am, on average, losing about 35-40 planes per day, and about 20-22 pilot KIA and MIA (plus about 12-15 WIA) per day. Allies losses average about 90 planes and 80 pilots per day.
All my German squadrons are at full strength (except for Wilde Sau night fighters, which are at about 2/3 of maximum), with about 100 single-engine fighters, 80 Zerstörer und 80 older (pre-Schräge Musik) night fighters in reserve.
Judging from the Aircraft Losses screen and the replacement rates given in the manual, the Allies should have about 300 B-17, 500 medium bombers and 250 Typhoons less than they started out with, but probably have a solid stockpile of fighters (except Spitfires) and B-24s.
Lately the AI has shifted from sending 8th AF against industrial targets to sending them against airfields and troops - might this be because it is running short on serviceable medium bomber groups? I noticed no change of behavior in the MTO.
Production-wise, I markedly increased research on the FW-190D, which I hope to rush into production before the P-51 becomes widespread. I only allocated 1-2 factories each to the other designs because it struck me as better to concentrate on one new design first and otherwise just produce more planes.

Axis vs AI is quite easy to win...
the Allies need 2 score points per 30 turns to stay in the game => as soon as day do not reach this number the Axis side has won.
As Axis you can affort to loose 40 A/C per/turn without any problems.
The Allied side can live with 100 losses per turn for a long time ( especially inPBEMs )

The AI has different main strategies, some against some kind of industries, some for air superiority, and so on....

To follow up on Werner's points on our PBEM game:

Winning or losing the game is binary outcome, based on the Allies either reaching their set score or failing to accumulate sufficient monthly improvement in the score to avoid defeat. There's a huge gap between the two outcomes which is where the entertainment comes from on a daily basis.

I'm not playing this game to win by bombing score; as I've stated before, if that was the target I'd be pounding RUBBER and CHEM, together with RR and PORT, which I've done with some success in other games. At this point (Feb '44) I should be on at least 15 points for bombing score, and maybe 17-20 terror based on previous experience. By that standard I'm doing poorly, but not badly enough to lose outright for while (post D-Day). Werner is doing well, mainly because he's been around the block long enough to control his own attrition rate whilst knowing how to increase mine at low cost to himself. But to be honest I don't think he's really trying that hard. A case in point are the NJG - the BC attacks are only there to generate some useful terror and RR damage whilst generating NI kills, and Werner knows this. There isn't much point risking a further 10 pilots KIA/MIA every night to shoot down a few night bombers which I can more easily replace.

This time out I'm trying a variety of things, mostly aviation targets with some oil thrown in. But even when I start to make inroads on them, I intend to change strategy. I'm more interested in seeing if I can cause Werner critical pilot attrition without suffering massive casualties myself in a long game; if I got his aviation industry and fuel down to zero, there would be no scope for the big air fights which are really the point of this game for me.

11th February 1944. A: 112/2338 (28aa), X: 73/1031 (4gd). 48 109G6, 11 Spit IX, 19 P-39, 16 P-38L and 16 P-47D.

MTO: Various tac strikes in Italy. The usual P-39 massacre is staged over Venegono AF, but 80 Sqn in their P-47C's catch some RTB's over Oria AF in revenge.

ETO: The 8th send a single force to Daimler-Benz EFAC 12%. No resistance inbound, but the escorts see some combat after the target (or, more accurately, the works canteen) gets bombed. 32/336f 3/96b 17e. The tactical forces do most of the work, with supporting Marauder raids getting 3/432f 2/64b 30e and even doing 49% damage to Prum RR in the process. The 2 TAF Mitchells do well, 11/264f 1/48b 20e and Nouzon STEEL 49%, with the following Tiffie strikes getting 4/144f 4/48b 17e. Low-level mossie FB's do poorly against Bergougnan RUBBER 42%, 3/24b.

BC: 1 Group revisit Essen because I forgot that 6 Group had bombed it last night. Whoops. All bombs in the target area for 7/290b, with 0/12b for the LNSF supporters. No NI claims.

12th February 1944. A: 73/2122 (20aa), X: 55/598 (1gd). 32 Bf109G6, 17 P-38L, 24 B-24J.

MTO: 15th AF on their tramlines to Bavarian aviation industry again, with two forces of 128b demonstrating their usual standard of inaccuracy - BMW Munchen EFAC 4% and Munich Dornier AFAC 8%. Some fighting involving the escorts on the target leg before OKL revert to the usual cripple-hunt on the return leg over the Alps and Adriatic. 17/256f 24/256b 33e. Some tactical strikes in Italy, but nothing worth talking about.

ETO: Some tactical activity outside the usual supporting raids for the 8th AF today. The 9th AF miss Hispano-Suiza EFAC and Bailly OILS but achieve their main aim by performing some useful attrition, 9/192f 5/64b 27e. The 2TAF Mitchells add a coulple of claims, but no bombing damage. The FB's do little either.

BC: 3 Group to Hohenbudberg, 0/216b and 0/12b from their delayed LNSF support. No NJG activity while all bombloads reported in the target area.

13th February 1944. A rest day; a couple of SAS losses. The Calvi French P-39 wing re-equip with P-47C's; they might have a chance in air combat now.

14th February 1944. A: 56/2691 (9aa), X: 51/644 (4gd).

MTO: The 15th visit Milan-Alfa EFAC 80%, with various supporting tac raids, the best of which is the 12th AF Bostons attacking Oria and Venegono AF's, 1/96f 0/64b 10e, although the Stab units lurking in southern Italy claim some revenge as 8 A-20C's go down on a raid to RR near Rome.

ETO: The 8th AF send a small force to Junkers AFAC 5%, which does attract some combat for the escorts, 5/336f 1/96b 18e. The supporting 9th AF Marauders see no action bombing Paderborn and Lipperode AF's, but the escorts to the 2TAF Mitchells to Soesterberg AF and Welheim FUEL enter the hornet's nest, 13/293f 15/48b 42e. The Tiffies and Mossie FB's do some useful bombing damage - Elektrion OILR 99% and Philips ARM 79%, but no significant combat.

BC: 4 Group to Stuttgart-Neckar PORT for the first LGO raid in a while . No NJG activity.

15th February 1944. A: 104/3435 (37aa), X: 82/1032 (0gd).

MTO: The 15th AF return to Bavaria and by some miracle finally do some damage to their favourite targets - BMW Munchen EFAC 99%, Munch Dornier AFAC 90%. A small cripple-hunt is the limit of the air combat. 0/320f 9/255b 1e. The usual tactical raids see the LW scramble from the Milanese AF's and lurk to the north before summoning the nerve to challenge the last wave of raiders but no significant combat develops.

ETO: The 8th send three forces of B-17G's to aviation targets near Brunswick. Another LGO raid , although my outrage is diminished by some suprisingly good results. The PFF lead units manage to do some light but useful damage to Bussing and NIMO EFACs as well as Wolfsberg OILS. 7/696f 0/12b 0e. The real fun takes place in the supporting tactical raids, as it usually does when OKL decide to implement their occasional lapses from their normal cowardice.. I mean, masterly inactivity . Despite weather delays, the 9th AF Maruader forces do 19/335f 0/64b 55e and the following 2TAF Mitchells manage 5/306f 0/48b 25e, and even one of the Typhoon raids scores 10/57f 2/24b 8e. Most of the kills are RTBing or pursuing over the Dutch coast.

BC: OKL defend against an accurate and concentrated 5 Group raid on Berlin, with Flak and fighters taking advantage of good visibility over the Big City to inflict 10% losses or 37/360b, the biggest BC losses in the campaign so far . The supporting LNSF Mossies manage to scatter their bombs from 5,000 feet higher without loss 0/36b as the Lancs go down over the city area and on the return flight to the west. Some measure of revenge is claimed by the NI's getting 8 NJG kills and the heroic Wellington RCM rear-gunner who drives off an He219.

Real life sometimes intrudes - in this case helping my parents move home. Now back to Werner kicking my arse, with some whingeing from me: HS, has the Rail Flak targeting bug been dealt with? Werner has located his RR Flak on the north German AF's (nothing wrong with that) but this means that I'm unable to select the AF's as primary or secondary targets during the mission planning phase; the Flak unit is always selected as the target no matter what my preference is. I've come across this before, and lost a *lot* of aircraft attacking RR Flak instead of my intended target, and done no bombing damage to either the R Flak or the co-located target in the process.

16th February 1944. A: 99/2581 (32aa), X: 63/740 (0gd).

MTO: Tac raids, with the 12th AF A-20C's finally nailing SIAP-Vado Ligure OILS 99%. 14 Hurri II's lost to Flak and Stab units returning from Guidonia CHEM, although one P-40 close escort gets a DFC for killing a 190 for the first P-40 air combat kill in a very long time.

ETO: The 8th stage what should have been a 328b effort to Erla AFAC and Magdeburg-Junkes EFAC, but it develops as another LGO raid and combat is restricted to the escorts on the return. 17/633f, 4/8b 18e. The supporting tactical raids do a little better, with one of the 9th AF Marauder forces hitting Hannover POWER 85% and claiming a total of 1/323f 11/64b 15e. The 2TAF Mitchells see some combat due to their lethargic escorts, 0/348f 16/48b 32e, while a Mossie FB raid escorted to the Ruhr by Mustangs does 3/42f 3/24b 8e and the Tiffies 1/76f 1/48b 3e for no real bombing damage. Several RTB crashes on both sides.

BC: 6 Group to Halle, all bombloads in the target area for 6/312b. The NJG come up and avoid the NI's, while the Mossie NF's lose some to Flak - 4 vs Dusseldorf AF alone. Berlin PR'd at 76% RR damage, which means 5 Group did well despite their high losses.

17th February 1944. A: 29/698 (21aa), X: 7/164 (2gd).

MTO: Various tac F strikes on the usual Italian targets, nothing exciting.

ETO: 9th AF and Tiffie strikes in the Somme Valley. Nothing exciting happening there either.

BC: 205 Group manage another LGO raid against Targoviste OILS. Gnnnh.

18th February 1944. A: 63/1664 (29aa), X: 25/344 (9gd).

MTO: Tac F strikes on AF's and RR.

ETO: The 8th sends a small force of B-17F's to Paris, 9/144f 8/96b 11e Hispano-Suiza EFAC 14%. The 9th AF Marauders go in first to absorb the LW response and hit Baily OILS 85%, but OKL keep their fighters on the ground until the 8th appear. The 2TAF supports to Paris AF's miss the action.

BC: 1 Group to Magdeburg. 14/292b to Flak and NJG, although the raid seems accurate. The LNSF mossies try an Oboe raid on Krupp STEEL and get 15/24 bombloads in the target area for no losses.

19th February 1944. A: 113/2345 (9aa), X: 41/876 (0gd).

MTO: The usual tactical F routine.

ETO: The 8th AF go to aviation targets around Magdeburg in force. No resistance on the way in, with two waves of combat developing - some Zerstorers on the post-target leg, and then everything plus the kitchen sink comes up to attack the slowest of the three bombing forces as it dawdles back across Holland while combat plus the bingo fuel bug seems to send the escorts home early. 1/648f 94/396b 64e. All but two of the bombers lost came from the Magdeburg-Junkers force, which lost 92/132b in total. Results were, however, good, with Magdeburg-Junkers EFAC 18%, but Junkers AFAC 100% and AGO Oscherschleben AFAC 91%. The supporting 9th AF raids were cancelled by weather, which helps explain the vulnerability of the 8th on the last section of the return leg, while the 2TAF Mitchells lose 4 B-25J for no fighter claims or losses while hitting Gniesenau FUEL 81% and Dortmund Hoerder STEEL 41%. The FB's return to thr VSITES, as I haven't been bombing them enough recently.

BC: 3 Group to Hamm for an accurate raid, 5/216b and no NJG activity.

20th February 1944. A: 16/642 (10aa), X: 8/177 (3gd).

MTO: Tac F strikes again.

ETO: FB's to the VSITES in small numbers. Some skirmishing against a 9th AF sweep to Tille AF, but no major combat.

BC: 4 Group to Wedau for an accurate raid, with 90% of the bombloads on target and the remainder hitting Duisburg. No NJG activity.

I have not seen this one ?

of course when I went in, the AI had all of it's RR Flak set up at Cities

but normally, I am able to click on a site with a RR Flak, and it gives me two targets to pick from ?

when I tried it, I got one raid going to the Flak site (and the misses hit Paris instead) and the other to the GE city and those bombed the city (2 Groups did hit the RR Site with no damage showing)

but normally, I am able to click on a site with a RR Flak, and it gives me two targets to pick from ?

That's what should be happening, but it isn't in this game. I'm not being offered the choice of the two targets (AF or RR Flak) - the Flak is automatically being selected as the target. Try an email game against yourself; I've never seen before it when playing against the AI.

21st February 1944. A: 100/1488 (27aa), X: 71/755 (2gd).

MTO: All the major action in the south, with a big day for the 15th AF vs the Viennese aviation industry. Two forces of 128 Liberators hit major resistance on the target leg of their attacks, and the biggest air battle in the south for ages develops. Cloud obscures the primaries, but the secondaries are hit - for Bad Voslau AFAC 99% and Hafen Freudenau PORT 45% for 26/320f 41/256b 81e. Some skirmishes but no major combat for the tactical forces, MAC Baltimores over the Adriatic to the Spilt AF's and various 12th AF A-20 and MAC B-25's vs the Milanese AF's.

ETO: A couple of sweeps under the cloud base, with 10 Thunderbolts going down on the main one to Tille AF.

BC: Bad weather.

22nd February 1944. A: 120/3937 (43aa), X: 131/1152 (0gd). A clear Allied victory for once Although it cost 63 B-17G and 12 P-47D, amongst smaller losses. 40 Zerstorer go down, which is excellent news for me.

MTO: The 15th attack targets around Vienna, for no resistance and reasonable bombing results; Ostmark EFAC 18%, Ostmarkische OILR 99% for 1/311f 5/256b 2e. Various tactical strikes in Italy, the best of which being a low-level Mossie FB raid to Turin-FIAT EFAC 87%, which sneaks in while the mediums and fighters keep the active Milanese & Turin AF's busy.

ETO: The 8th go to in two widely-seperating forces to Bussing NAG EFAC 35% and BMW Eisenach EFAC 30%. No resistance inbound or at the targets, but major combat kicks off on the return leg, with substantial losses from the trailing bomber force over Holland when the bingo fuel bug kicks in for the fighters. 2/668f 63/328b 42e. The supporting tactical forces do well, with minimal bombing results, but excellent air-combat; the 9th AF Marauders get 11/388f 4/64b 57e and the 2TAF Mitchells do some excellent work against RTBing LW fighters north of the Ruhr, 3/383f 2/48b 51e. The Tiffie raids do little, but the Mossie FB's go to Krupp STEEL and contribute 7/60f 1/24b 13e in the process.

BC: 5 Group to Ludwigshafen RUBBER, with about 50% of the bombloads in the target area, 3/360b while the LNSF Mossies get 24/36 bombloads into Dortmund-Herne PORT for zero losses. No NJG activity. PR reveals Wedau 66% and Halle at 99%, at last.

23rd February 1944. A: 30/565 (8aa), X: 7/216 (0gd).

MTO: Fighter strikes in bad weather against Italian targets again. The 15th AF P-38L's get 1/45f 4e on a raid to Venice, but otherwise nothing interesting going on.

ETO: Some minor FB strikes. Werner flagrantly breaks the house rules by shooting down the Spitfire escorts to a Tiffie strike on General Motors ARM, 18/34f 0/24b 1e. One day the Spitfires will fight back, dammit....

24th February 1944. Rest day due to bad weather. Not even SAS losses.

The mayhem continues with some satisfying bloodshed...

25th February 1944. A: 155/2338 (19aa), X: 155/1388 (0gd).

MTO: The usual tactical fighter strikes.

ETO: The 8th sends a single force of 128 B-17F's to Berlin Barsdorf EFAC. Weather closes the target out, and the secondary is bombed ineffectually instead, Ehmen OILS 14%. The usual cripple-hunt/bingo fuel LW interception develops on the return leg, 1/360f 30/128b 39e. As usual, the supporting tactical raids see most of the fighter combat execpt it develops earlier than usual as the 9th AF are intercepted in force inbound over Holland. The two B-26G BG's are wiped out, but score 22/330f 63/64b 97e in the process. The 2TAF Mitchells manage 23/458f 9/48b 54e. No bombing damage to speak of, but the attritional results are excellent. The Mossie FB's hit Huls RUBBER for minimal results, but also do well in combat, 2/61f 0/24b 16e. The Tiffies do targets around Lille little damage and no combat.

BC: 6 Group visit Remscheid for the first attack on this town, 1/336b, no NJG activity and 75% of the bombs in the target area. 0/12b LNSF Mossie B.XVI's support, with all bombs on target. PR reveals Ludwigshafen RUBBER 99%.

26th February 1944. A: 42/671 (22aa), X: 11/371 (6gd).

MTO: The usual Tac fighter raids, with some skirmishing for the 15th AF P-38L's over the Adriatic, and the MAC P-40's bombing Foligno RR.

ETO: Some Tac fighter strikes backfire, with 22 P-47D's going down on a strike to Tille AF.

BC: Grounded by bad weather.

27th February 1944. A: 85/3907 (23aa), X: 67/320 (0gd). 40 Bf109G6, 44 B-17G.

MTO: The normal Tac fighter stuff is brightened by an inept effort by the 15th AF Liberators missing Giuriu OILS, without any LW resistance and only 2/96b lost to Flak.

ETO: The 8th AF stage a major effort, with three forces of B-17G heading for aviation targets around Stuttgart. No resistance inbound, and the usual bingo-fuel/cripple-hunt interception develops as they return over Belgium and France. 1/686f 44/300b 42e, for DB Sindelfingen EFAC 13%, Daimler Benz EFAC 31% and Junkers Jumo Jet EFAC 100%.

The Tac forces see some action, but overall it's a day of limited effort by the LW and limited combat results as a consequence. 9th AF get 0/380f 3/64b 15e for Hesperange STEEL 62% and 2TAF Mitchells 3/318f 3/48b 22e for Ougree-Marihaye STEEL 81%, with FB mossies to the same target 1/53f 0/24b 4e. The Typhoon raids get a couple of kills for once, 0/118f 2/48b 4e.

BC: 1 Group to Hannover, 2/292b, no NJG resistance and almost all bombloads in the city area (only the ABC flight in 101 Sqn missing...). The LNSF manage to get 3 bombloads on to Koepchenwerk POWER in Essen for 0/12b.

a little information of the Axis side:

Fw190A and Bf109G-6 ( including the cannon variants A8 and R6 ) are still "the" German interceptors. There is enough production for most of the units to keep nearly full strength. Better A/C will come to the frontline around the date they did in RL.

The Italian factories started to produce the G.56 [we play one of JCs OB/OAs] - the first Italian Staffel will use those A/C soon.....Co-Axis contries will probably also use this plane, but only if I am able to produce enough of them.


Score is still in favour of the Axis side with 2/9/15, because Gavin still goes mainly for aircraft industries. Maybe this will change...he has started to bomb the Romanian Oil sites.

MTO: Another inept attack by the 15th AF on Targoviste OILS, with zero damage to the target off-set by some useful air combat kills - even if this includes some fearsome D.520's; 1/192f 4/96b 25e. The usual Tac F strikes otherwise.

ETO: The 8th send a small force of B-17F's to IG Farben Knapsack CHEM, for no damage and no resistance. The LW avoid the tactical raid in support; only one as weather cancelles the rest.

BC: 3 Group to Huls RUBBER, with 90% of the bombloads in the target area for 1/216b lost to Flak damage. No NJG activity.

And now to calm the braying mob calling out in desperation for the statistical analysis:

Jan: A: 2,081/46,734 or 4.5%, Flak 28.7% of total losses; X: 1,127/19,452 or 5.8% with 24 gd.
Feb: A: 1,733/48,375 or 3.6%, Flak 29.2% of total losses; X: 1,100/13,486 or 8.2% with 36 gd.

So, compared to last month, my sorties were marginally higher despite the shorter period (28-day month vs 31 days in January) and what I thought was worse weather, while my losses were appreciably less. I'd love to claim this improvement was down to my tactical genius, but the real explanation is down to Werner's reduced sortie total, which dropped almost a third this month. The good news for me is that Werner's proportionate loss rate increased, meaning that his losses remained relatively static despite his reduction in interceptions. I do seem to be improving my efficiency, otherwise his losses would have declined to around 780 this month. The high losses keep his pilot attrition (KIA/MIA) at 744 vs 761 in January. Enough to hurt, but not enough to cripple him in the short term.

Bombing damage has almost been irrelevant this month, with most of the 8th and 15th's efforts being concentrated on AFAC and EFAC. The cumulative damage to OKL's output took place too slowly to counter dispersal production beginning, however, and while I reckon I've dislocated his production to a degree, I doubt I've caused any reduction in his current air strength. Bombing score is basically static, with the SB dropping marginally while the TERROR score rose by about 5,000 points.

On the detailed breakdown, Werner's fighter losses are similar this month compared to last with a marginal increase for the single-engined types (855 vs 830)off-set by a small reduction in Zerstorer (179 vs 228). NJG losses remain indentical at 24, although the proportion of WS increases slightly. I think all of these were lost on night sorties. For me, the night bombers lose 118 vs 108, and the NF losses 36 vs 34. No problem in either case, and losses are easily out-stripped by production allowing re-equipment with the Halifax III, Lancaster III and Mossie B.XVI to go ahead quickly.

On the day side of things, my HB losses decline to 521 from 587; not a massive decline to be sure, but enough to permit me to re-equip most B-17F units with the G and keep them in action. B-17G losses rise to 220 from 147, but the F's still carry some of the load with 156 vs 291. The B-25J losses remain static at 145 vs 149. I've plenty of Liberators in reserve, so the main problem hasn't been equipping the new 15th AF BG's arriving, it's been the bad weather in the MTO.

On the mediums, overall losses decline slightly to 239 vs 270, with the details revealing B-25 losses remaining static while 2 Group re-equipped with the B-25J (69 vs 72, B-25D & J). The Bostons reduce to 51 (including G's) from 84, largely down to the weather limiting operations with the 12th AF. The Marauders increase slightly to 112 from 97, more than half of which were due to the recent B-26G massacre. The Baltimores lose a paltry 4 aircraft, indicating how marginal the MAC forces in southern Italy have become.

For the fighters, overall losses decline to 671 from 949. Spit IX losses are down to 135 from 145, although this is balanced by another 13 Spit XIV. P-38L losses are up to 130 from 94, most of their losses have been escorting 15th AF Liberators, but their contribution to tactical fighter strikes on bad weather days keeps a low level of attrition going while the Liberators rest. The P-47D's and P-51B's show a major change, with losses down to 195 vs 320 and 56 vs 100 respectively. The key change here was the abandonment of long-range fighter strikes of the kind which cost me 60 Thunderbolts for practically nil results on one day alone last month. The Mustang loss reduction reflects the LW's avoidance of fighter combat in favour of cripple-hunting this month, which is reflected in the RAF Mustang III losses reducing to 11 vs 48 in January.

A new month, same old problem with the weather.

1st March 1944. A: 21/1460 (10), X: 7/76 (0).

MTO: The 15th AF send a single bombing force to Ostmark Marburg EFAC. Resistance inbound over the Adriatic for a change, 1/128f 7/96b 7e, but nil bombing results to the wrong target . Some supporting tac strikes across the Adriatic, but nothing serious develops.

ETO: The 8th AF send a B-17F force escorted by 9th AF fighters to rest the 8th FG's to Lverkusen RUBBER. Minimal results, no losses or resistance. Tac raids restricted to FC Tiffies hitting Cherbourg VSITE.

BC: 4 Group to Frankfurt-Main PORT. No NJG resistance explained by the fact that it was another LGO raid. Ho hum. 205 Group manage to get most of their bombloads into Ploesti for a couple of flak losses, 3/168b.

2nd March 1944. A: 23/918 (15), X: 8/343 (0).

MTO: The usual Tac F strikes, the worst being a P-38H FG getting 7/48f 1e vs Orvieto RR. Mostly Flak losses, but a couple lsot to the southern Italian Stab units.

ETO: More of the same Tac strikes, with one Tiffie raid managing Flandre-Brabant POWER 99% for a pleasant change (normally I only use 1 Typhoon squadron with Spit IX close escorts; the lack of bombing punch is balanced by reducing morale loss and sustaining a supply of FB units with 99% morale).

BC: 5 Group return to deep-penetration with a raid on Falkenberg, south-east of Berlin. Two thirds of the bombloads on target, 5/360b due to NJG activity, although the Mossie NF's kill 1 Wild Sau and 7 Tame Sau for 3 Mossies lost in return. Frankfurt aM PORT PR'd at 68%.

3rd March 1944. A: 194/2773 (24), X: 161/1656 (2).

MTO: The 15th AF send two forces to Viennese aviation targets. The LW come up to fight, gathering forces at an RV point east of the city, and the battle errupts on the target leg. Good combat results, 19/256f 37/256b 76e, but abysmal bombing results, with secondaries and targets of opportunity suffering zero damage. A couple of supporting 12th AF P-38H raids do little, while the tactical mediums are active over Italy, mostly against the usual RR targets.

ETO: Another small-sized B-17F raid to Leverkusen CHEM is left without escort by the weather over Britain, and Werner siezes his chance to attack over Holland before the delayed escorts can catch up, and a bloodbath ensues. 11/192f 83/96b 93e. The 9th go to French AF's and are too far away for direct support, although they score 8/192f 0/64b 19e, while 2TAF gop even further west to Paris, with best of their combined Tiffie/Mitchell/Mossie efforts being the Mossie FB strike on Kuhlmann CHEM 37%, 9/72f 0/24b 16e.

BC: 6 Group to Duisburg, 3/356b, all bombalods in target area and no NJG reaction.

4th March 1944. A: 3/296 (3), X: 0/0.

MTO: The usual bad weather Tac F strikes, and OKL take the day off.

ETO & BC: Resting due to weather.

5th March 1944. A: 16/748 (11), X: 1/170 (1).

MTO: The usual, due to weather.

ETO: Some minor activity, the most interesting of which is a 9th AF Thunderbolt sweep to Tille AF, which catches one fighter on the ground, and ends up being chased back across the UK by a major LW reaction from the western JG thanks to the Belfast bug. One Thunderbolt goes down to 11/JG 2 over the Severn, and another is damaged by III/JG 2 over Wales. If only....

BC: 205 Group to Sofia, 1/171b and all bombloads in the target area for once.

6th March 1944. A: 52/1002 (23), X: 7/525 (0).

MTO: Tac F strikes, including 7/48 15th AF P-38L's lost on an attack on Venice RR in combat over the Adriatic plus Flak.

ETO: Tac F strikes, including 16/48 4e 9th AF P-47D raid on Athies AF.

BC: 1 Group 4/268b to Wilhelmsburg (Hamburg), with 90% of the bombs in the target area. 0/24b Oboe Mossies to Krupp-Borbeck STEEL. Some NJG activity, with 2 killed for 4 NF's down to Flak damage in return.

7th March 1944. A: 71/3078 (38), X: 15/597 (0). A break in the weather at last.

MTO: 15th AF to the Vienna area, for practically nil resistance, 0/288f 8/256b 0e and Ostmark EFAC 8%, IG Apollo OILR 99%. 4/96f 12th AF P-38H on supporting AF strikes. The usual tactical stuff in Italy, no air combat and only Flak losses.

ETO: The 8th AF head for industry around Cologne in three forces of 100 B-17G and meet almost no resistance; 1/386f 8/300b 1e, for Leverkusen CHEM 76%, Leverkusen RUBBER 27%, IG Farben Knapsack CHEM 78%. The 9th AF Marauders lose some to Flak and cripple-hunting, 5/377f 10/64b 0e, and the 2TAF Mitchells hit the industry in Liege amongst some token combat; 6/288f 0/48b 13e for Fabrique d'Armes ARM 66%, John Cockerill STEEL 68%. Also a Mossie FB raid to Krupp STEEl 26% for 7/61f 12/24b 1e.

BC: 3 Group to Ebano OILR outside Hamburg, hopefully a big enough target for BC to hit with H2S, but only about 45% of the bombs hit the target area. NJG active, but sadly none claimed by my intruders.

8th March 1944. A: 20/2250 (15), X: 0/0 (0).

MTO: Guess what? Yes, Tac F strikes plotted against Italian RR under the cloud base. Oh, the excitement.

ETO: The 8th AF active for the second day running by some miracle, and three forces of B-17G's head for Hamburg/Schelsig-Holstein; 0/620f 5/300b 0e and Eurotank OILR 0%, Neumunster AFC 99%, Kiel AFAC 99%. Various Tac raids in support, but the LW remains in hiding.

BC: 4 Group to Altona to contine the mini-Battle of Hamburg II, 2/240b and 80% of the bombloads on target. No NJG activity recorded. Wilhelmsburg PR'd at 72% but Ebano OILR only at 12%.

9th March 1944. A: 44/1175 (27), X: 0/57 (0).

MTO: The 15th AF return to Italian industry to keep busy pending better weather over Austria and southern Germany; 0/64f 3/96b 0e in a zero-resistance raid to AGIP OILS 26% outside Venice. The usual TAc F strikes, the worst of which is a 12th AF P-38H raid on RR NE of Rome which loses 9/48f 1e, mostly down to the usual suicidal strafing of RR while being intercepted by a nearby Stab unit.

ETO: Some Tac F raids on VSITES, including 10/48b Hurri II's lost at Dunkirk. Ah well, stuff 'em.

BC: 5 Group to Brunswick, 9/360b for a perfect raid, and 0/36b for a 85% accurate LNSF raid on Recklinghausen. NJG in hiding. ALtona RR PR'd at 42%.


10th March 1944. A: 74/1981 (31), X: 22/1151 (8).

MTO: The 15th AF sends two forces to the Vienna area, 0/256f 8/256b 3e suggesting minimal resistance although two 12th AF P-38H sweeps net 20/96f 5e, which is why I prefer to use the fighters for bombing attacks rather than sweeps. Bombing damage is worthwhile for one force, hitting Bruck RR 99%. Various customary Italian Tac raids as per usual.

ETO: As the LW won't come up to fight, the 8th sends some fighter sweeps to LW AF's from Denmark to France to provoke a fight. Some useful losses are inflicted, but as usual the sweeps are expensive.

BC: 6 Group to Gelsenkirchen, 0/336b and 0/24b LNSF for a concentrated and accurate raid against nil resistance. 205 Group go to Budapest, 1/72b.

MTO: The usual Tac F raids, with a rare skirmish between some Stab 190's and Spit IX's on a raid to Perugia AF.

ETO: An ineffective low-level Mossie raid to St Gobain CHEM, otherwise quiet due to bad weather.

13th March 1944. A: 49/1745 (24), X: 29/389 (0).

MTO: 15th AF 0/288f 5/256b 2e, Gyor RR 69%, Lobau OILS 5%, supported by 12th AF A-20's, 4/96f 0/64b 7e, Sisak OILR 99% and MAC Baltimores, 4/66f 2/36b 10e. Most of the fighting takes place over the Adriatic apart from some cripple-hunting.

ETO: various Tac F raids around Tille AF, the best being a Typhoon raid 7/61f 2/24b 17e.

BC: 3 Group to Hohenbudberg turns into an LGO raid, although 96 bombloads do hit the target area.

14th March 1944. A: 79/4060 (26aa), X: 48/962 (1).

MTO: A poor couple of 15th AF raids bombing the wrong targets, 0/256f 6/256b 1e for Dunai AFAC 0% and Szony OILS 16%. No resistance apart from cripple-hunting on the return as per usual. The supporting 12th AF A-20's do better, 0/192f 0/64b Osijek OIL 99%, while the usual Tac F raids take place with the only excitement being some Kittyhawks raiding Adriatic AF's being badly handled by the G.56's.

ETO: The weather breaks for the 8th AF at last, who send three forces to aviation targets aroudn Stuttgart. 18/696f 11/300b 55e, for poor bombing results due to weather - Offenberg RUBBER 86% (secondary), Stuttgart RR 0% (secondary) and Daimler Benz EFAC 34% . For once the LW contests the long inbound leg, with zerstorers active over the target leg. The 9th AF supports do little this time, totalling 0/356f 3/96b 2e, with only one of the three Marauder groups involved doing anything worthwhile - Morhange OILS 48%. Various 2TAF tactical raids do little.

BC: 4 Group to Wuppertal, 8/240b all hitting the target area, with 24 LNSF mossies getting 17 bombloads on target after the heavies depart, presumably down to a weather delay. Still, no NJG action. 205 Group go to Bucharest 1/172b and manage another fiasco, with all but two squadrons bombing a decoy site NW of the city.

15th March 1944. A: 101/2444 (31), X: 119/1267 (0).

MTO: The usual tactical stuff, the most notable being a 15th AF P-38L strike on Venice attracting opposition on the return leg and coming off worst as OKL manage to stage relays of interceptions to exhaust their fuel, 8/48f 1e.

ETO: A medium-sized 8th AF raid to the Ruhr attracts a major response, 21/211f 18/160b 57e Paguag Rubber 63%, while the 9th AF supports do well covering the return leg, 4/384f 10/64b 61e, and 2TAF almost as well, 3/272f 0/48b 25e for the Mitchells and 4/120f 2/48b 6e for the Tiffies.

BC: 5 Group manage to send 7/334b to Bunawerke RUBBER despite the irritation of constant automatic upgrades to their Lanc I's. 188/349 of the bombers reaching the target hit it, which is worse than I hoped. The NJG come up to play for once, and the NI's claim 10 (a real 5) in response.

16th March 1944. Rest day due to weather. This is really crippling the allied effort at the moment (well, that plus the pants bombig damage even while the LW are in hiding).

17th March 1944. A: 41/2103 (22), X: 8/197 (4).

MTO: 15th AF on their tramlines to Vienna; 0/320f 0/256b 0e, for Ostmark EFAC 2%, Lobau OILS 99%. The usual TAC F stuff, with a P-40 raid to Imotski AF being roughly handled.

ETO: Tactical raids, with the 9th AF Marauders to Liege doing little damage, while the 2TAF Mitchels to Tille AF manage 4/76f 0/24b 5e despite the weather cancellation of their supporting raids.

BC: 6 Group to Hohenbudberg, 4/310b with 0/24b LNSF support, 90% on target and no NJG reaction. Bunawekr RUBBER PR'd at 57%.

18th March 1944. A: 37/1528 (31), X: 1/26 (1).

MTO: The 15th AF on another quest to hit Ostmark EFAC, or at least locate it instead of the CFAC they keep hitting. Another targetting bug? Anyway, nil opposition and results of 0/320f 6/256b 0e, Moosierbaum CHEM 99%, Ostmark EFAC 1%. The Mediums are active for the Tactical forces, but Flak does it's usual execution - 22 12th AF A-20's lost on attacks oil targets at the head of the Adriatic: too high and they do no damage, too low and flak massacres them and they still do no damage even with high morale. The usual Tac F raids otherwise.

ETO: Bad weather.

BC: 1 Group to Gelesenkirchen, 0/292b, with all bombloads in target area and no NJG activity.

19th March 1944. Rest day due to weather. Again.

20th March 1944. A: 122/3323 (32), X: 76/992 (2). At last, some combat.

MTO: The 15th AF send two forces to Vienna, in yet another frustrated attempt to hit Ostmark EFAC, while OKL send their Adriatic interceptors recce-hunting. The 15th get 0/320f 0/256b 0e and only hit a T/O en route home. Well, it only cost a quarter of a million gallons of 100 octane to achieve nothing... The usual tactical stuff, but no air combat.

ETO: The 8th send three forces to Cologne RR, preceded for once by some 2TAF strikes to the Dusseldorf area. A new tactic from the ever-inventive Allied planning staff, or a bone-headed mistake? You decide; in any event OKL ignore them while only one of the Typhoon forces does anything worthwhile, Phillips ARM 99%. The 8th get poor bombing due to cloud (Cologne Nippes 33%, Cologne/Eifeltor 46% and Cologne/Gereon 87%) but only lose aircraft to Flak and cripple-hunting on the return, 0/502f 12/300b 2e. The supporting 9th Marauders see all the action, and the absence of the 2TAF supporters tells, with heavy losses inflicted by a major LW response, 42/384f 49/64b 88e, although the bomber losses are inflated by an unescorted return raid which gets slaughtered when returning over France after reaching the UK, nearly 2 hours after their original ToT.

BC: 3 Group to Wedau, 3/3240b, no NJG response and all bombs in the target area. The comedians of 205 Group stage a laughable raid on Szolnok; the 28 Halifax II's of the lead units in another LGO miss the town by miles.

21st March 1944. A: 60/604 (33), X: 12/358 (3).

MTO: The usual tactical fighter strikes, the worst being a 12th AF P-38H strike on RR near Rome which brings up the three Stab units lurking in mid-Italy. The strafe/bounce-cripple cycle leads to 15/48f 2e, which is one reason I keep obsolete fighters around to soak up the losses.

ETO: Some more Tac F strikes under the weather. Hurris hit Pas de Calais VSITE 98%, while the 9th AF P-47D's strafing/raiding Tille AF get hammered again, totalling 28/144f 10e, mostly down to more strafing/cripple-bouncing.

BC: 4 Group manage another LGO raid on Bottrop. A couple of NJG units active 96/240b hit the target area, but no air combat.

22nd March 1944. A: 143/3748 (23), X: 56/1240 (4).

MTO: A busy day; the 15th head for Budapest and for once the LW come up to fight, assembling a mass of fighters west of the city as the Liberators come in. The bad news for me is that this coincides with the weather delay of the target-leg escorts, but fortunately I plotted enough inbound escorts to put up a fight, although one half of the bomber force ends up unescorted over Budpest and the first stage of the return leg. The returning escorts get repeitively bounced as they exit the Adriatic coast on return (15 P-38L lost for nothing; one day the RTBing fighters may fight back. One day...) Good results against targets of opportunity for once, and the bomber losses are low considering the circumstances, 27/320f 23/256b 51e Budapest RR 99%, Budaors OILR 100%. The supporting P-38H sweep gets massacred near Frankfurt courtesy of our old favourite, the Belfast bug. Otherwise the mediums hit Villa Orba AF and the Tac F's do the usual monotonous RR strikes. No combat in either case.

ETO: The weather breaks sufficiently for the 8th to stir themselves into action, and some short-range raids to high-value targets in the western Ruhr follow. No resistance as usual, but some good bombing for once, 0/384f 8/300b 0e for Krupp STEEl 100%, Duisburg Ruhrort 47%, Hohenbudberg RR 68%. The three groups of 9th AF Maruaders in support do some useful damage to Gutehaffnung STEEL 86% for no resistance, 1/487f 4/96b 0e, while the 2TAF raids also avoid combat while the Mitchels hit Randerath CHEM 72%, with the exception of one of the Tiffie raids to Antwerp which attracts most of the action from the late-scrambled LW, 24/69f 0/24b 6e.

BC: The Second Battle of the Ruhr continues, with 5 Group to Dortmund 8/336b with 0/36b LNSF support. Token NJG activity, but the raid isn't concentrated desite 90% of the bombloads hitting the target area.

sidenote from the German side:

The Fw190A and Bf109G-6 are still the main A/Cs in the Luftwaffe....even the Co-Axis forces have better A/C ( at leat their Elite units ) with the Centauro and the Archer and also with the G.56.
The German heavy fighter forces are still flying their Zerstörer - if they can go into a bomber unit they are able to finish them off!!
The German Schlacht units are also sometimes make a few sorties against the enemy.....mainly in the East.

But soon
very soon
there will be a new A/C for the Luftwaffe....
the long nosed Fw190D production will come online soon...very soon.

23rd March 1944. A: 11/930 (9), X: 7/0 (5).

MTO: The usual Tac F raids on Italian RR.

ETO: The 9th AF do a couple of successful sweeps against French AF's for once, losing a couple of P-47's to Flak in the process.

BC: 4 Group to Vorhalle, 2/332b and no NJG response. Most bombloads in the city area, although abut 70 hit Alm Pluto FUEL.

And now, a quick note about my ECM/RCM deployment: by now 192 Sqn in 100 Group has re-equipped with all three RCM a/c now available; the Fort RCM, the Lib RCM and the Halifax RCM. At the start of the game I normally use the Wimpey ELINT aircraft to follow the same track and timing as the bombing force, in the hope of picking up Lichtenstein and then SN-2 emissions, whilst departing from the main force track near the target in order to pull some of the night-fighters after them; this works reasonably often. I also use them for spoof raids against the AI, but unfortunately Werner's not dumb enough to fall for that, and it's hard to con a human player into chasing an ELINT/RCM-only raid as if it was the real thing. When the RCM aircraft arrive in '44, I plot single missions, using the Halifax RCM's with Mandrel (which was supposed to create a jamming screen vs early-warning radar) to come out ahead of the main force and orbit the coastal zone radars which would be the first to pick up and track the incoming raid. Then I distribute the Fort RCM and Lib RCM a/c along and around the main force route, some over nearby radars and others on the track to distrupt radio transmissions with their Jostle transmitters. The Forts and Libs have the right cruising speed to mix up as multiples (rather than single sorties) in the main force, but the Halifaxes are too fast and have too short a range to do that effectively in my opinion.

I have no idea if any of this works, but it was pretty much what BC did in real life, so I'm hoping it's not a total waste of time in the game.

using 2nd Tac/IXth to make a path during the day, and then placeing jammers to the deeper sites at night, you can pretty much cut down all the radar if that is the path that BC is using

once the Malmut came in, it makes it a bit HARDer to work out (of course, the main idea is to keep the Malmuts down)

in the OB/OA we are using all ( or nearly most ) of the ECM/RCM devices are working !!
but be aware that we also have some of the better German Radar sites included ( Wassermann, Mammut, etc....)

I am really enjoying this AAR ... fantastic effort!  ... now if I could just find my old game ....

A question about escort what works best?  I seem to remember woeking on a FG ahead of the main force with the bulk of the escort as top cover with one/two squadrons in close.

I'd be very interested to find out.

24th March 1944. A: 192/4211 (40), X: 175/1853 (1). A good-sized bloodbath at last. Losses include 68 B-24J, 42 B-26G, 31 P-47D and 77 Bf 109G6, 45 Fw 190A, 35 Me 410.

MTO: 15th AF head for the Romanian oil industry near Ploesti for a change, attracting some local interception on the return route. 2/288f 5/256b 14e for Targoviste OILS 0% (yet again - presumably the Axis defences include some effective Voodoo witchdoctors) and Mongasia OILS 100%. Various tac raids including the mediums hitting Villa Orba AF, but the only combat comes with some skirmishing on a P-40 raid on southern Italian RR which attracts the local Stab units.

ETO: 8th AF 2nd Bomb Div B-24's head for oil targets around Hmaburg. No resistance on the way in, but flak-cripples causing groups to deviate from the planned return route north of the Friesian coast lead to unescorted groups getting hammered (why do they do this? Alternatively, why don't the escorts split up a bit more to cover the absent bomb groups? In this case the weather was marginal, but it's tedous being unable to do anything about providing escort cover for the deviants without resorting to wasteful, buggy and ineffective fighter sweeps). Final results 0/696f 63/300b 40e for Harburg Rhenania OILR 81%, Ebano OILR 37%,Alcona OILS 99%, so at least I got some industrial damage to compensate.

The real battle takes place against the tactical forces, with three 9th AF B-26G groups going to targets between Bonn and Cologne, with 2TAF supporters coming in to cover the return route. Major combat inbound, with the escorts failing to prevent repeated bounces of the bomber units. Nil bombing damage, but heavy losses inflicted and suffered - 34/580f 42/96b 129e. The 2TAF Mitchells hit RR around Liege for zero bombing results, but a tolerable 12/324f 6/46b 26e. The Tiffie and Mossie raids do little and miss the combat.

BC: 1 Group to Mulheim, 1/292b with 0/24b LNSF support. No NJG reaction, but some of the later bombing falls short in Oberhausen. 205 Group send a theoretical 168 Halifax II's to Bucharest, but guess what? Yes, that's right, another LGO raid. However, I'll spare the crews the firing squad this time as the two lead squadrons actually managed to get their bombloads in the city area for once.

Depends upon the defender's tactics, I suppose, but I generally avoid close escort for various reasons (mostly down to it seeming to cause the lead bomber group to seperate from the following ones after bombing) and go for high escorts; one escort unit between 2-4,000ft and another at about 5-6,000ft which is just close enough to bounce anybody intercepting the bombers. If I have enough available fighter units, I'll stick another layer of escorts in at 8,000ft (and if I'm really paranoid, another one at 9-10,000ft), but these are only going to be relevant for bouncing anybody taking on the lower escorts, and won't give the bombers much protection.

Sending sweeps ahead is an excellent tactic, IMO, but it's problematic, depending upon timing (plus the strafing/freezing bugs) and the defender's response. Against the AI sweeps along and to the sides of the bomber route can be very effective, but a human opponent is harder to catch out like that, and the sweeps can be very vulnerable to the defender concentrating on them.
