Hello all,

I've been wanting to get involved with Empires in Arms for quite a while now, but didn't have an opportunity to play it when the old cardboard counter game was available, and could never seem to find a copy on eBay. I just downloaded the computer game, and am looking forward to PBEM play after I've had a chance to familiarize myself with the rules.

I'd appreciate it if some of the more experienced grognards could help me out and maybe explain some of the basic strategies that are used in the game -- kind of save me from having to re-invent the wheel here. Helpful tips about each of the countries, that sort of thing.

Thanks in advance!

This thread pretty much explains it: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=688121 with my personal views on page 2. While applying to the board game they still apply EiANW in most ways (other countries cannot gain Dominance so anything about that is moot) and I think it summarizes the positions of the powers pretty well..

Thanks for the link. I am sorting through that thread, and it does look good.

I was a little disappointed that the manual appears to have been intended for people who had already played the paper & pencil game. A little hunting online, however, netted me a copy of the original AH rules, which I will be looking through as well:

I have never played before without AI, and I am france playing in a PBEM game.  Why doesn't france just put the fleet in the mediterranean?  is there some disadvantage? can england still blockade there??

They can still be blockaded, GB has bases in gibraltar and malta so they can basicly reach anywhere on the map. imo the primare consequense of setting up the french fleet in meditarranean is that england is less pressured, there is no imminent threat for an invasion.

Its probably still adviceable for GB to blockade the french fleet but he now has an option to use his fleets for other things if he wants (sweden denmark and portugal is good prices for GB - a few more fleets is a great help for GB, and more important, deny them to anyone else. With these fleets spain russia or france potentially matches GB on the sea - GB can usually get some of them anyway, but probably not all of them, at least not without upsetting Russia or Spain or both).

If GB ignores you, France can get Neapels but if France really wants Neapels there is usually no-one who can stop him from taking it by land anyway. Another option would be to go for north africa but there is plenty of neutrals to conquer in europe and going for africa will most certainly upset Spain and Turkey.

France dont have many potential friends and even if France is the single strongest power in the game not even Napoleon can afford to be at war with everyone at the same time.
