Well, whatever you guys changed in the email routine between Version 2.3 and Version 4.0 has caused something to go terribly wrong. The game is currently unplayable by email due to the following problems encountered by two machines which have functioned perfectly well in this regard for several months. I just began a Soviet-US 1948 conflict, on turn 2 the following problems arose. 1) I could not see a replay of my opponent's turn as the replay button would not respond. 2) Several of my tanks which had not been fired upon (I infer since they had no suppression), were in different locations from where I had left them. 3) At the end of my turn, in the space normally reserved for the observance of artillery fire, I watched as several of my tanks (under no suppression) drove around by themselves (they were not retreating- in fact they generally advanced). 4) While these tanks advanced, my opponent had op fire situations arise, when they did the game asked me for verification of his opfire! I read the manual and I don't recall any of these issues being mentioned. These are rather astounding problems which render the game unplayable for email. This is unfortunate, so it is my hope that the Matrix team either endeavors to fix the problems or please repost Version 2.3 so that those of us who play email may do so. ------------------ Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus

I have sent my PBEM files to Matrix, and they managed to reproduce the missing replay problem, so a fix to 1) in 4.1 is likely. I have no idea for 2) and 3), except that maybe you had them under computer control? 4) must be a bug.

No they were not under computer control. It is a secure game and it appears that the game is switching control of units before turn termination. I'm working on modifying the preferences new to version 4.0 to see if there are some situations in which preference settings can cause logic conflicts in the game. I do know that if you select the wrong mode of play at startup you can run into some strange problems that did not occur in version 2.3. Currently running some tests to see if we can prevent anomalies. I'll let everyone know what the results are. Is any one else other than Fuerte and I actually playing email games in version 4.0? Anyone having problems? ------------------ Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus

Yesterday when I hit V again to view the recording, suddenly something happened! I saw one tank firing another. But that was all... still about 99% of the recording was not seen.

I sometimes get short recordings too, I never had a problem in Ver 2.3 with Email. Version 4.0 is absolutely worthless for email games since you can't see the replay. I changed my preferences to set 0 on op fire confirm time and this seemed to solve the op fire insanity I had been seeing in email. I had assumed that email mode would automatically handle the op fire but this is not the case- A rather serious bug it would seem (you should never be able to crash a game by making a wrong selection on a preference screen). Since I only play email (I have not the time to screw around for hours and hours in an internet game) SPWAW 4.0 is going on the back burner until there is some fix that at least returns the game to a level of functionality (like a replay). I really wish I had a copy of 2.3 (with the 4.0 OOBs). If anyone has a disk with ver 2.3 on it, I'll happily trade you my disk with 4.0. I miss my email games and playing the AI bores me to death. ------------------ Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus

Problems with missing replay, cut-off replay, files not loading, infantry squads changing the number of men between reloads of the same file (due to reduced squads turned on).. Another sort of a problem is the huge file of 2 megs

The only real problem I have with email games (besides the huge files, but I've got a fast connection, so that's mainly a problem in finding opponents who can stand it is that you can't play two PBEM engagements in a row. If you play one turn, save it and then go to another email game, it doesn't start. I've had several opponents re-send me their turns for no reason, as this is fixed by exiting the game completely and restarting, but it's a little annoying to do this if you have 3 email turns to play at once. ------------------ Mats 'Rickenbacker' Nylund -------------------------- rickenbacker@innocent.com

Hi Fredde, I forgot to mention the reduced squads bug- I had the same problem so I just turned this option off too. It seems like most of the email bugs are caused by the new preferences. Hey Rickenbacker and Red Baron (wrong war guys ), am I to understand that you both get a proper replay during your respective turns? Do tell. Cheers, ------------------ Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus

Well no, I haven't tried any PBEM with 4.0 yet, because Fuerte's posts have scared me off! I'm waiting for 4.1 before I start up another . Nothing is more frustrating than having problems with an email game. Warhorse and I were trying to play one a while back, with a custom map in 2.3, (not an easy thing to do with lots of Fred's editor use involved), and first the start lines were bogus, then the victory hexes were backwards, then he had set C&C on without telling me, leading me to a really poor setup for C&C, and then finally we got hit by the "disappearing units bug"!!!. So we finally gave up and played a generated battle. All in all it was a horribly frustrating experience, (the first one that is, the generated battle was only a horrible experience for Mike's Hungarians ...)
