I'm looking at putting together a new CIVIL WAR game on the VASSAL system which will play and feel like a boardgame. I have some docs and maps, but this is not one of the eras that I have a lot of experience on so...I'm calling out to the experts.

What I'm looking for is data on military units, economy, and other relevenat data from the period.

The map board being developed is MASSIVE at a scale that we hope will be 1 hex=5 miles, and covering all the northern states, southern states and as far west as the Texas / Indian territories.

Any takers?

You might consider investing in the Official Records on cd. I think Guild Press used to offer the whole set on cd for about $70. They may still have it. Or find a library that has the whole physical set, although they take up a whole big wall of shelf space. The accompanying map book is available at bookstores and online.

James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" is a good resource that's not too overwhelming.

Try Heidler's "Encyclopedia of the American Civil War". It offers a lot of information. And look at the Oxford Atlas or West Point Atlas. "The Longest Night" by David J. Eicher covers the military side well including numbers.

The historiography of the ACW is extensive, so getting info shouldn't be a problem for you. The USA is of course better documented than the CSA, as many CSA records were destroyed in the last phases of the war. I have a feeling, though (not independently verified) that vital stats are preserved in various state archives.

A lot of the economic data are available on the web (depending on what you need, of course).

Thanks Gents... I have the above mentioned reference books and will begin searching the internet for more vital information.
