We have had threads on best game, weird things in movies, most tactical.. now I am going to start one on the strangest or most bizarre game that you ever played. It can be a wargame or not, a PC, console, or board game - if you wish.

Mine would have to be a little known gem called The Tone Rebellion. It was made by Logic Factory, the same people who made the oft talked about Ascendancy. It shared some of the visual aesthetic, but the story was wacked out beyond belief. You semi-controlled, kinda like an RTS, this tribe of tone (think mana) swimming tentacled creatures (called Floaters) as they tried to erect certain sigils to kill Leviathan and his minions, which came as spores, infected the tone pools (resource for building) and created monster generators. I never beat the game, came close, but it seemed like a lot of fun. Check out that wiki article and look for screenshots... if my description sounded strange, imagine playing the game...

Now, what is your strangest game, and why?

Probably Planescape: Torment here, also one of my favorite games in general.

Master of Orion 3. Just a terrible game by any standards, when my wife saw me playing it she said "is that pong?" now that is weird.

It wasn't weird, just awful...

As for weird, MDK is a big candidate, along with Sacrifice.

That would have to goto the game S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E. I've never seen another game like it and it is totally different from any other RTS game out there. Very underrated and underhyped. One of the best all time RTS games I ever played and still play. The concept of the game is strange, the units are defintely strange, but, it all comes together almost perfectly. If you've never played this game you gotta download it and play it just once. If you've never liked RTS games I can almost bet you will like this one. Cause I hate RTS games those resource gathering cookie cutter template ones for sure.

Seventh Cross - Sega Dreamcast
Project Seaman - Sega Dreamcast - The first of these defies explanation, the second is just strange

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Various - Not unexpectedly strange by any means but a severe departure from previous and much more logical text adventures.

Dozens of more obscure console games that I've forgotten about and thus aren't worth mentioning.

Probably Spheres of Chaos (now freeware), in recent years, anyway. It's like asteroids on steriods until you start messing with the graphics options, whereupon it becomes asteroids on steroids, LSD and assorted other illegal substances. Try 'fluid' as the background setting, and have sunglasses and a box of aspirin on standby.

Going back a while, The Sentinel was indeed seriously strange (and very good) - was that really 20 years ago?! And pretty much anything Jeff Minter coded.

Funny, Steve Jackson Games also has some pretty strange games in the Munchkin series. Those Munchkin games have a D&D version (with various funny D&D spoofs), a Space version, and even two Cthulhu versions! All are spoofs (you have the GRAPE Old Ones in the Cthulhu version with H.P. Munchkraft).

I'll agree with Sacrifice. While I think Ascendancy's aesthetic was weirder. Sacrifice had a weired storyline with stranger units. PS:Torment let you do lots of crazy things... but if you ever played the Planescape PNP module, it wan not all that out of the ordinary.

Good games on this list guys, lets keep them coming!

Besides the obvious Llamasoft titles like Attack of the Mutant Camels and ColourSpace, I can only think of
Dragon Lord which was pretty weird at the time...

OOOH! Dragon Lord! Now that IS a blast from the past. Nothing like adding strange herbs to eggs, then hatching them a burninating the countryside. It was like a Trogdor Simulation.

Oh yes, Toon! was fun.

Roleplaying cartoons was sometime out of hand with the right group of players.

Well, maybe the game wasn't as strange as the group of guys were.

Strangest, hmm...
Sentinel and clones
Worms serie
Perimeter

If I'd have to choose one, I think it would be Perimeter.

Little Big Adventure 1/2. Strange but also wonderful.

The French are experts at making twisted weird games.
Also just about any Japanese game aimed at Japanese market (dress up dolls hehe).

Btw. Found a Windows version of LBA. The artwork was really exceptional for its time, it
still holds up well.

Turborakketi (cannot find any reference to it anywhere unfortunatly). Very cool game where you would drive a sort of spaceship (a triangle) and try and shoot down your opponent (both on the same keyboard). Gravity was set before starting each round and made it very difficult. This was in the old amiga-days.

If anyone have this game please share it, it should probably be freeware if it can be found anywhere.

I think SSI made a sucky one back in the day called "Warwinds"?? It was pretty strange and I never got into it at all cause it was another one of those resource gathering ones. That's what I got for buy everything SSI published. Later in their life some of the games they released sucked oodles. lol

Though weird isn't necessarily crap in my book.
Consoles have much more examples than PC gaming obviously. 80s saw much
more experimentation in gaming.

You can say that again. Anyone remember the old Raiders of the Lost Ark game for the Atari. Now that made NO sense at all. ET wasn't much better. Why were there so many pits?

Wonder if those ET games they dug down are still playable?
But that game was just awful from start to finish. A bit like MOO3.

Btw. The prices people are asking for Machiavell are insane. 1000 bucks.

Maybe an indication that this game needs a PC version ;).

War Wind. It was, but regardless was one of the better Dune 2 derivatives. I don't think it sold that well though, everyone was playing Warcraft 2 and Command & Conquer instead.

lol Herston I played it for about 5 minutes and I chucked it. I still have it, but, never played it again. The only resourse gathering rts'es I really ever played past the first level were Dune II and Age of Empires origional. I tried Warcraft but it was just too I dunno kiddified to continue and the artwork sucked like some romper room toys. I still think Sacrifice is the best rts game ever made. I can't get over how easy it is to get into and everything is right there in front of you only thing you have to gather are souls.

Is this a board game or a computer game you are talking about? $1000 bucks for Machiavelli computer game? No way!

The board game. That computer game you are thinking about, is actually Holistic Designs own creation.
The boardgame is more like Diplomacy but has added complexity (just enough).

It was the guy from SSI who did most of the graphics for there was allowed to design a game. II was some sor of soace conquest game and was the first I ever saw that used the Resource Point) the basic RP may he live in infamy.

Well I will get flamed but after playing board and computer games for over 30 years and strange is not always bad but I have to say "Shivering Isles for Oblivion was strange to play for me. It was just that I was not comfortable for me to play the game. I did not like anything about it and the strange quests and the basic plot line, NPC's, side quests were not for me. I kept rooting for the forces of order. Maybe its just me but it is the first game in all these years that I quite because the game world and quests made me uncomfortable.
