Is it a real estimation of the power of a unit ?

Is there a way of disabling the possibility to see enemy unit's strength (for a complete FOW: you can just see the number of rifle or tanks an enemy unit have but can't know their real value) ?

Well - not exactly. It's a number based on the the readiness of the unit and the number of power points of all the subformtions. It's more of an indicator of the value (think worth or cost) of a unit. This can often be translated into combat strength, since stronger units cost more, but diferent kinds of units also impact this - easiest example being air unit in airport attacked by ground units. Usually 'big' units win over small units, but it does depend on what kind of subformations are in each unit.

So you also have to watch the types of subformatioins in the unit. ie, any bazookas with infantry, AT guns, armor etc.

In fact "power points" are arbitrary values set in the editor, the values are "somewhat" relative to the unit power as thought by the designer but that's all.
According to terrain and unit types the odds can be completely different than that "estimated" by the PP : for example Tanks against Bazookas in towns/woods, or arty against tanks are much less powerful than what the PP indicate.
