AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/29/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 23 encounters mine field at Akyab (30,29)

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga, Mine hits 1

sub laid VH2 hits Hyuga. SS O19 and O20 are mining the area and are replenishing at Diamond Harbour, so they lay 50 mines and can replenish a couple of turns later...

Japanese Ships
PG Kanko Maru
PG Toyotsu Maru
PG Kaiun Maru
PG Busho Maru

Japanese ASW gets too good for my taste... S-46 retires with 35 sys and 63 float... 50/50 chance I would say...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/30/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1044 encounters mine field at Lautem (33,78)

Allied Ships
CL De Ruyter, Mine hits 1, on fire

I will break every record in WITP regarding mine hits of "non invasion" TFs... what kind of joke of am I the victim? said it before, I just donīt understand whatīs happening in this PBEM regarding those mine hits...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 113 encounters mine field at Palembang (20,55)

Japanese Ships
MSW W.14

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 2nd Tank Regiment, at 34,27

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 78
P-40E Warhawk x 62
SB-2c x 1

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
101 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 5

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

the LRCAP last turn was just a feint or a try to catch some unescorted ground strike... no LRCAP today...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 53,47

Japanese Ships
AP Biyo Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PG Kantori Maru
PG Hakkaisan Maru
PC Shonon Maru #3

Allied Ships
SS Tautog

Japanese ground losses:
39 casualties reported

we sent a new "Wolfpack" of 6 subs to the front (operating as single subs in different hexes of course) and one day after the subs arrived one achieved a hit on a medium sized AP...

the important fact of this turn is that I got recon reports about the IJA bombers being back at Mandalay. Iīm taking advantage of me seeing Hortlundīs aircraft transfers because Iīm the second player and I have to say I never liked that feature. So what should I do? I canīt stop looking at the enemy airfields completely and if I see that aircraft are moved in should I just wait until I get clobbered? I donīt like this "feature"...

well, the IJA bombers are back so Iīm expecting an attack on one of my airfields in India tomorrow. Probable target will be Imphal where I have 150 aircraft that were attacking the IJA TK rgt. I moved my bombers back to Dacca with 36 Tomahawks of AVG for escort. Those ac are now set on NAV attack / airfield attack Mandalay (6 hexes). This means my bombers will attack in the afternoon. So the plan is to do a sweep on Mandalay in the morning both from Imphal and Chandpur and see my bombers grounded in the morning. The IJA (if set to airfield attack) will attack in the morning and will be grounded in the afternoon. As Dacca was empty yesterday (thatīs what Hortlund saw) I donīt expect him to bomb my bombers at Dacca in the morning. He surely orders escorts for his bombers so his Cap will below the 100 fighters like the last days. My sweeps in the morning will deal with the remaining Cap and my bombers with AVG escorts will torch the IJA escorts and bombers on the ground...

thatīs the plan... will be interesting what will go wrong...

then, as expected, Hortlund bombs Imphal that is nearly empty as our fighters/fighter bombers have left the airfield to sweep Mandalay... Hortlund sets 220 fighters on escort/sweep and has not a single fighter left for Cap... I donīt feel for him if I bomb his unguarded airfield... what a mistake IMO...

all but 50 bombers attack Mandalay with a very small escort but nevertheless we torch a lot of aircraft on the ground... have to say that our plan worked better than expected, as we didnīt lose any fighters to the enemy cap...

Here are todays air losses! As Hortlund thinks that days where we exchange air losses at 1:1 is a success for him (canīt understand that at all at this date, but Iīm happy that heīs happy - Iīm happy too! ) I can surely say that today was a CLEAR ALLIED VICTORY then... Hortlund has lost hundreds of aircraft more in this area so far than we did and so far, all in all he had better planes and far better pilots. So Iīm perfectly happy with the situation...

PC Ch 19
PG Tamo Maru #7

Allied Ships
SS Sealion, hits 4

4 near misses but Sealion has to retire home...

letīs look at the ASW war so far... as mentioned earlier Hortlund is using massive IJA medium bomber formations to take out my subs. I move them every turn but the IJA bombers have achieved dozens of hits so far with half a dozen subs sunk and 15+ sitting in port now with heavy damage. Every day, our subs are attacked by Helens and Sallies... those bombers are sweeping the seas from Allied subs. Makes it impossible in the long run to keep up the sub war like the Allied should do it and I have to say a WITP campaign without a sub war is just plain BS... But before I lose all my subs to land based IJA medium bombers I will just stop it...

hereīs the average op report:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S-46 sunk and S-43 will sink the next couple of turns with 88 floatation damage now... great eh? As soon as the Japanese player uses hundreds of IJA bombers to clean the sea of Allied subs itīs impossible to send out the subs on patrol... perhaps something to consider for AE...

NOTE: CA Chokai was spotted at Lautern, 6 hexes from Darwin. Could be either a feint to destroy another surface TF of mine or a bombardment TF that takes position to attack Darwin tomorrow. I moved out all my ships and precious aircraft (like B-17 and P-40) and will wait what will happen tomorrow... I could really use BB Royal Sovereign now, the BB was tasked to cover Darwin...

our B-25s were hit hard but we also achieved a very good hit rate if we consider that there was strong fighter opposition and Koepang is a FLAK base... my B-25 units donīt look good at the moment... in the afternoon, not a single fighter was seen flying cap but my B-17 that were ordered to attack stayed home... could have been the end of the Japanese fighter force if my 4Es would have launched...

if our bomber pilotīs morale would have been lower, probably all bombers would have turned back. With high morale (that is history now of course) we were able to press this attack through at all costs...

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 16000 feet

ouch again... even more fighters were on Cap today and our B-17s are shredded, even though in the end we "only" lose 5 (16 replacement / month). Nearly 100% shot down or damaged... With the repair rates this means we wonīt have full strenght in our B-17 BGs for at least two or three weeks. At least morale will have recovered by then. Again, Hortlund was kind of lucky, as again, in the afternoon there werenīt any fighters seen on CAP and AGAIN my bombers didnīt take off in the afternoon. This time my B-25s were grounded, the airstrike was cancelled due to a thunderstorm over Derby. Amazing how many thunderstorms there are in Northern Australia. As it stands now, we canīt keep up continued bomber attacks. It doesnīt matter if escorted or unescorted, because even if we would chase away the enemy fighters, the high flak concentration would damage 30-50% of the bombers every time, even when attacking at 16.000ft. Going even higher makes no sense I think. No hr on numbers of flak units at a base, this could be something people should think about when starting a Nikmod game. But on the other side, with the Japanese fighters unable to really harm (when speaking of kills) armored US medium and heavy bombers, the Japanese should be allowed to place as many flak units where ever he wants. A BB bombardment could take out a lot of support troops at Koepang, but that isnīt an option at the moment. Perhaps we should just concentrate on the East End of Timor... With 400 fighters in Burma and 200 on Timor there canīt be much left for all the other areas. My first invasion will take advantage of these concentrations. Even if those fighters can be transferred in in 4 or 5 turns, this could be too late to really harm an invasion, not to think about the fatigue those fighter pilots would have. And our fighters with their .50 cal six pack can take down Japanese bombers. Not like in stock but perhaps enough to really take a toll on the Japanese bomber squadrons...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Tenimbar at 36,81

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 5

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AK Sipirok, Bomb hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet

Vals from Lautern attack a small AK at Tenimbar, the small size 0 island North of Darwin. I wanted to build it up to level 3 but this takes half a year. There are 3 sea bee units, but we increase the size 0 airfield only 3% every turn... impossible to really build it up it seems... I wanted to use the size 3 airfield as a torp bomber base if the Japanese try a bombardment of Darwin. Then my bombers would have a perfect staging base due to their range of only 4.

Like every turn, our subs are victim of Japanese air attacks. Not just Helens and Sallies attacked, there seems to be a carrier TF moving around the North of the Philipines as 3 subs were attacked by Vals and Kates... as I said before, the seas are being swept of Allied subs by a high concentration of Japanese aircraft on ASW duty...

Hortlund expected a strike from me on Mandalay today, as he had no Cap there last turn. This was too obvious Steve! There were all of Mandalayīs fighters flying Cap and those from Akyab on LRCAP as we spotted 220+ fighters in the air over Mandalay! We bombed a TK rgt instead...

Hortlund isnīt happy with the A2A at the moment and I can understand him as Iīm thinking itīs working good at some point, then a bit later, I again think itīs not working that good at another point. From this strike I lost 6 Hudsons. 6 out of 11 isnīt a loss rate I can cheer about and for me it seems itīs pretty good working. Of course if you see 180 Mitchels going in against 70 Zeroes and you see "only" 15 lost (but 75 more damaged) then you might think it was working not so good. But in fact, one of those strikes of my bombers completely shredds my offensive capabilities as you have only 50% of your bombers operational the next days, so it seems it makes it impossible to do continuos attacks and therefore itīs very hard to close bases down like in stock. So in that case, it seems everything is working very good, compared to stock. You just have to get used to see different kill rates, compared to the completely off numbers of stock.

what makes it even worse for Steve is the fact that he is reading the kill numbers wrong all the time... canīt figure out why, perhaps someone should tell him that thereīs an info screen where he can see the real kills of a turn. He stated in his email that itīs a joke that 40 fighters are only able to take out 3 bombers, but in fact 6 were shot down. 6 out of 11... it seems he isnīt aware that the combat report alone isnīt telling him the real numbers... 6 out of 11 shot down and the rest damaged looks like a perfectly realistic result for WW2. And it would be a disaster for the one who lost 6 out of 11 bombers. In fact itīs not nice for me either as I receive only 20 Hudsons a month.

my Tomahawks are sitting ducks against the Japanese fighters but they were able to fight the bombers through. A dozen turned back due to low morale, without escorts we would have seen all turn back. From 112 B-17Es deployed (ON THE WHOLE MAP!!!) we have now 41 operational after two attacks. Both BG with morale below 40... hit rate of this attack wasnīt impressing either...

during the night phase a single AK unloading at Derby was retreating due to a Japanese surface raid. Now I see what was trying to attack my shipping at Derby. Something I donīt understand, why risk Yamato if you can do the same with a CL or CA escorted by one or two DDs? I only used a BB when I tried to engage enemy cruisers. To go after some cargoes or DDs, a CL works better...

I have never seen my surface TFs hitting so many mines in any of my games. My SC TFs hit more mines in 6 months in this game than in all my other games together, speaking of some 2000+ turns...

donīt know what phenomena we see here but at some point this is just getting ridicoulos. What is this? UV^3??

Allied Ships
AK Empire Wildebeeste

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

two Betties launch from Koepang but miss our AK... Hortlund started to fly recon with a DinahII over Derby and with Japanese BBs in the area Iīm sure we will soon see all our bases in Northern Australia being nuked with BBs. We donīt have BBs to cover every base up there and our torp bombers only have a range of 4 so this will get nasty if Hortlund really decides to nuke our bases... Fort level 9 everywhere but forts have NEVER helped against BB bombardments. All you have to do is RECON, RECON, RECON... and then...

the important fact of this turn is that I got recon reports about the IJA bombers being back at Mandalay.

Hi Castor

I really (really) hate this as well, although I'm playing the Japanese in my game. It completely screws the airwar by handing the allied side the whip hand. My opponent has been pretty good about introducing house rules and the best way we have found of handling this one is to limit allied bombers by not allowing them to be flown on the turn they transfer. It avoids the Allies jumping them into a base invisibly, launching a strike and jumping away before any kind of counter-strike can be launched. It's not perfect: there is still the problem that the allies can jump lots of fighters into a base that appears empty to the japanese player and savage un- or under-escorted bombers.....but there's not much you can do about that one.

Great AR BTW - always my first stop for catching up.

thanks

this "feature" was and is always a problem. Even if I donīt attack with my bombers the turn I move them in, it still favours me because a) I could empty an airfield that my opponent sees as fully stacked and will be the probable target for his attack or b) attack the airfield when my bombers arenīt transferred in and they were already sitting at their base.

But I think that AE takes care of this problem...

Iīve been reconning Rangoon for quite some time and last turn Chandpur was built up to level 4 airfield so I brought in my Wellingtons with a range of 9, which is the range from Chandpur to Rangoon. We spotted 2 dozen ships there and no CAP with only 4 ground units. There were no fighters in the air and no flak fire at all!!! We lost one Wellington to ops and achieve one penetrating hit on CL Jintsu and perhaps some sys damage on the BBs... This attack should force Hortlund to spread out his fighters as well as his AA units, not concentrating everything at Mandalay and Akyab (which is completely empty now...)

those Tomahawks are really performing bad. 7 were damaged for not a single hit on the Oscars. We outnumbered them AND had the bounce. Our B-25s stayed home once again... seems impossible to see an attack from Darwin and Wyndham the same day...

FWIW, you're not losing them any faster than the real allies did as far as I can tell.

at the moment itīs like 10-12 subs hit by air ASW in a month of which 4-6 sink. A Brit sub was hit today, 32 sys, 71 float... 27 hexes to Darwin... chances are 1:4 that the sub will survive...

now I know why there are so many fighters on Timor. This is the first sweep on Darwin, coming from Lautern. I was shocked! We had nearly 100 fighters on 80% Cap and see only a laughable number of 44 in the air! I think we have a dozen radar stations at Darwin. Nevertheless we achieved a great result as in the end 11 Zeroes are lost today. So that was kind of surprising, as my RAAF and USMC fighter pilots are all in the mid to high 50s only... I also set my 50 Tomahawks on Cap now. I thought my base would be safe with a high number of Cap. A massed strike of IJA bombers could have really done serious damage... Even though we flew some massive strikes so far, it seems we really have to get serious now to force the Japanese to more or less retreat from Timor OR to invade Australia (which isnīt a real possibility for the Japanese IMO).

wonder what that damn sub is doing at Darwin. Spotted it last turn and thought that it would lay mines. Created an ASW TF out of DDs (which did nothing of course) and a mine sweeping TF which acted as a target for the sub...

what is interesting here is the fact that we spotted a BB TF (Kirishima spotted) 6 hexes North East of Darwin heading East. No IJN BB can move 6 hexes normally (seen the Kongos do it sometimes even if their max speed is 29 and therefor they "should" only move 5 hexes) so I wonder if this TF tries to do a bombardment of Darwin or if it is heading East and retiring to Truk or somewhere else. At Darwin we have BB Colorado (night rating below 50)and BB Resolution (with a night rating of 80) with 3 DDs as escorts - 4 ships with radar, this should prevent us from being surprised. If I would play the Japanese I would NEVER engage BBs with my BBs, itīs mostly a gamble. At night every BB will be able to penetrate the enemyīs armor due to the range mostly below 10.000 yards. One or two 15 or 16 inch shells that hit one of the Japanese BBs could slow one down to 4 hexes or even slower and then my 70 torp bombers from Darwin will have a big, fat and slow target right in front of them. Of course thereīs still the danger of seeing a nuke on my base or Darwin being clouded the whole day. At the moment I would guess that itīs just too dangerous for Hortlund and heīs only moving his BBs away, but who knows. What makes me a bit sceptic is the fact that heīs so near to Darwin...

unfortunately this game is on hold . Hortlund seems to have a corrupt file, he says he canīt load the turn. Rtrapasso would be so kind to run the turn but I think Hortlund wonīt give away his password, we will see...

you could ask now, why on earth arenīt you just redoing the last two turns. Well, I had never problems redoing a turn when some kind of bug hit the game and it was obvious during the replay. Though this corrupt file thing is different. I had this happen earlier against Japanese opponents. The file seems not to be working. Sent it to someone other, it worked. Now if it would be a turn where itīs probably pretty quiet or if thereīs nothing expected to be happening, no problem. The last time this corrupt file thing came up, the Japanese player lost a couple of carriers with me as the Allied suffering one bomb hit on my carriers. So it was a very special turn, where the corrupt file popped up... you go two turns back and the carriers wouldnīt meet two days later... deliberately, or just because you canīt give exactly the same orders like before...

Now in our case, I ordered a huge airstrike from India which could destroy a monthly Japanese aircraft production. Whatīs even more interesting is the fact, that I spotted Kirishima off Darwin, as I wrote in my last post, she (or more BBs) are either going to bombard Darwin (where I have 2 BBs and 70 torp bombers) or the Japanese are just going East. So what if this is a turn that is working? The IJN comes in, damages my 2 BBs and gets damaged also. Then 70 torp bombers attack the Japanese at 3 or 4 hexes range because their max speed dropped below 5 hexes... 2 BBs and a CA sunk or something like that are sunk... to top it off, my airforce from India torches 100 enemy fighters... would be a perfect turn for the corrupt file to jump out of the box... thatīs why Iīm insisting to see this file run on another computer, but that seems impossible at the moment...

Iīm not blaming any of my opponents but in all honesty, the Japanese player is the one that resolves the turn, sees the results first. If he doesnīt like them, what does he do? Normally send it back of course, saying ouch... but he could also say the file doesnīt work, letīs go back two days and you will never see his carriers, BBs, aircraft... show up two days later at the place where he lost them (or would lose them) in the corrupt file turn... everytime (well, everytime isnīt really correct, but often) I had this corrupt file thing, it was a turn where something "special" happened, never when it was a usual turn. I donīt call anyone a cheater, but if I would go back two turns in this situation and then nothing happens at this date, then the game would have a really bad smell for me for the rest of itīs duration... or until we have the next corrupt file... So to really clear up all doubts, the turn should be sent to rtrapasso, who would be so kind to run it and then we would see whatīs really happening. If Hortlund isnīt willing to give away his password, then I fear this PBEM has ended... another one...

Please release AE with a working AI...

I didnīt want to lose the game and finally I agreed to redo the turn...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/15/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1006 encounters mine field at Perth (7,100)

Allied Ships
MSW Grebe

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1031 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Allied Ships
MSW Latrobe

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 29,71

Japanese Ships
AK Morioka Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS S-36

S-36 on the way to the front hits a big AK...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hereīs the expected engagement...

Night Time Surface Combat, near Darwin at 36,84

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CL Natori, Shell hits 2
DD Arashi, Shell hits 24, and is sunk
DD Hakaze, Shell hits 6, on fire

Allied Ships
BB Colorado, Shell hits 2
BB Ramilles, Shell hits 1
DD Sims, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD O'Brien
DD Walke, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Morris
DD Stuart
DD Arunta
DD Tjerk Hiddes

we were able to surprise the Japanese after we spotted them on radar. During the surprise phase we launched a lot of torps that all missed. Arashi was shot to pieces after being surprised but she was able to put a fish into DD Sims. The BBs were all hit by non penetrating hits. Shortly before the engagement ended DD Stuart was able to hit Kirishima with a torp... this should slow her down... Coloradoīs night exp was boosted up to 59...

so there was this expected engagement, though only one BB with a small escort was coming in. Recon the day before showed a lot more ships AND sightings with spotted ships, but for the moment I can live with it... hopefully (or better say I donīt expect) to see those "corrupt" files again...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Darwin at 36,84

Japanese Ships
CL Natori

Allied Ships
SS O21

4 torps miss...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1006 encounters mine field at Perth (7,100)

Allied Ships
MSW Grebe

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1031 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Allied Ships
MSW Latrobe

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 35,83

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima, on fire
DD Hakaze, on fire

Allied Ships

4 torps miss Kirishima retiring towards Lautern...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 8th Tank Regiment, at 34,27

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 78
P-40E Warhawk x 18

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
34 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 2

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

the big airstrike from India wasnīt ordered anymore as I wasnīt sure about the situation as I didnīt get a combat replay from redoing the turn...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is the reason why I think it was a suicide mission to send surface forces to Northern Australia:

Day Air attack on TF at 34,80

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 14
Swordfish x 40
Hurricane IIb x 16
Kittyhawk I x 16
T.IVa x 7
Beaufort I x 9
P-40B Tomahawk x 21

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
T.IVa: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima, Torpedo hits 7, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hakaze, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x T.IVa launching torpedoes at 200 feet
2 x Swordfish launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Kirishima is lost. This adventure cost the Japanese a BB and a DD... you can surely understand why I didnīt wanted to redo this turn. I spotted BBs and CAs moving back from the East to Lautern so I think they were part of the Kirishima TF before...

Kirishima isnīt worth a lot of points but Hortlund will miss her as escort for KB...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Baker Island at 94,92

Allied aircraft
B-25C Mitchell x 16

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
CA Tone
CL Yubari

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

most of our low exp Mitchels failed to locate the target and with low exp they donīt hit anything...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 34,83

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
D3A Val x 3

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 3

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
TK Empire Emerald

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet

First Japanese BB sunk!

Kirishima (Battlecruiser and Battleship, 1915-1942)

Kirishima, a 26,230 ton Kongo class battlecruiser built at Nagasaki, Japan, was completed in April 1915. After more than a decade of service, she was modernized at Kure between 1927 and 1930 and reclassified as a battleship. Again reconstructed in 1935-36, with her hull lengthened and more powerful machinery installed, Kirishima emerged as a modern-appearing 32,156 ton capital ship, quite fast though comparatively lightly armed and armored.

Her high speed ensured that Kirishima would play an active role in the first year of the Pacific War. She accompanied the Japanese aircraft carriers during their 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and was active during the offensive in the East Indies in early 1942. In March and April, she was part of the powerful force that raided the British in the Indian Ocean. During the Solomons Campaign later in 1942, Kirishima was present during the carrier battles of the Eastern Solomons in August and the Santa Cruz Islands in October. She received minor damage in the night surface action off Guadalcanal on 13 November. Two nights later, serving as flagship of another Japanese surface force, she was engaged by the U.S. battleship Washington (BB-56). Disabled in this encounter, Kirishima was scuttled a few miles west of Savo Island. Her wreck was discovered and examined in August 1992, resting upside down with its forward end blown off some 4000 feet below the surface.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/16/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1006 encounters mine field at Perth (7,100)

Allied Ships
MSW Launceton
MSW Lismore
MSW Grebe

sub laid minefield completely cleared now... should take some time until the next sub arrives and my MSWs will stay at Perth anyway...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1031 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Allied Ships
MSW Latrobe

my ports in Northern Australia have MSWs also...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 34,78

Japanese Ships
DD Usugumo
CA Kumano
CA Chokai
DD Kisaragi
DD Nagatsuki
DD Urakaze

Allied Ships
SS S-44

those ships are part of the TF that was originally spotted the turn BEFORE our corrupted file, so in all honesty, I really think that those were also ordered to attack Darwin first... the "not corrupted" turn saw only a very small escort for Kirishima... Yamato is also in this TF, I bet she should have gone to Darwin too... oh well

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Darwin at 36,84

Japanese Ships
SS I-27

Allied Ships

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Darwin at 36,84

Japanese Ships
SS I-27, hits 7

Allied Ships
DD Fox
DD Pakenham
DD Foxhound

I-27 attacks our ASW TF. 6 torps miss DD Fox, in return we achieve 7 near misses of which one damages the forward torp tubes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Myitkyina , at 36,28

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 89
P-40E Warhawk x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-15 Babs: 2 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 33

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

no flak and we even torch 3 aircraft on the ground. All flak seems to be concentrated at Mandalay...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby Defense Brigade, at 54,92

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 12

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 20000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 56,47

Japanese Ships
AK Suzuya Maru, Shell hits 9, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Gato, hits 1

South of Japan, we hit a big AK with a MK14, 2x4 inch shells and 7x.50 rounds. TF of 9 ships spotted going West so I think this could be an empty TF ordered to haul in some ressources.

What is interesting is the fact that Timor seems to accomodate HUNDREDS of Japanese aircraft now. Iīm heavily reconning Lautern and Koepang and at Lautern (level 2 airfield) we see 80+ fighters on Cap with 320 aircraft being spotted at the airfield. Well, I know how accurate recon is, normally I take the number from recon and divide it by 2 but then there would still be 160 fighters at this airfield. Allowed are only 50x2 + 10%. As I see 80 fighters on cap, I really wonder how many fighters there really are as there are also other aircraft types at Lautern. Normally, no matter if you set your CAP to 90% you see around 60% flying as the Japanese. So with all the other aircrafts there and 80 fighters in the air, it really seems that Hortlund has forgotten about our stacking rule, at least at Lautern...

Japanese Ships
AP Toko Maru #2, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS O23

Japanese ground losses:
72 casualties reported

Couple of hexes North of Timor the famous O23 is out on her next patrol after replenishing at Darwin and on the way to the front she sinks an AP. Parts of the 1st aviation rgt are rescued. Hortlund seems to build up Timor more and more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Lautem at 33,78

Japanese Ships
APD APD-37

Allied Ships
SS S-44, hits 1, on fire

APD-37 stays lucky, 4 torps miss but the damn APD hits our sub with a 4.7 inch shell. S-44 retires with 23/33...

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 16000 feet

this attack has finally completely wrecked our bombersī morale. Hortlund is now flying LRCAP over all those bases on Timor. Good tactic to see more fighters in the air as with short distances this is working better than 90% CAP AND he doesnīt suffer so many ac lost on the ground as most of them are in the air... 120 of our bombers turn back...

all of the Japanese flak in Burma seems to be stationed at Mandalay and Akyab. Mandalay has 100+ Oscars in the air flying CAP, so probably 150+ fighters at the base. Akyab, no aircraft at all anymore. Rangoon has only one Sentai flying Cap and the Oscars canīt stop our high experienced British bombers. We do a lot of damage and lose only 1 bomber to ops...

hmm, what should I think about that? We have spotted a BB TF 6 hexes North of Derby and 8 hexes North of Derby thereīs a CV TF. So after heavily reconning Derby Hortlund seems to send in a nuke with his BBs to Derby but thatīs the point that I donīt understand. Why does he send his bombers first? After the nuke flak fire wouldnīt even be half as intense...

we lose 12 Mitchels on the ground, damage to the airbase is already repaired again...

B-25C Mitchell x 61

Allied aircraft losses
B-25C Mitchell: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Ise, Bomb hits 4
BB Mutsu, Bomb hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

unfortunately our Mitchels are mostly below 60 exp and the hit rate isnīt impressing. 6 hexes North of Derby, only 500lb bomb hits that just bounce off. I have no idea what the CV TF is doing 2 hexes further North, perhaps itīs just there to scare me. Perhaps the bomb hits caused one or two points of sys dam but thatīs it. Tomorrow those BBs should go in position for the bombardment in two turns. They can only move 4 hexes, so most certainly they will be able to run 5 hexes when they do the bombardment but they canīt go 6 hexes, so this means my airfield is still full tomorrow and then I will take out most ac as they would all be torched by the Japanese nuke. I think I counted up the hexes 5 times and the BBs are still 6 hexes off Derby, so if the game doesnīt go completely crazy then there should be no chance for the BBs to do the bombardment next turn... but who knows...

here are the aircraft losses for this turn:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Lautem at 33,78

AK Nitiyu Maru, on fire, heavy damage

another unsuccesful attack on the already doomed AK...
