As you can see by my sig, my favorite game is is Civ II. (My favorite Matrix game is Gary Grigsby's World at War)
Well, I saw CIV IV on sale for $25, so I bought it.
I was apprehensive because I really did not care for CIV III very much, but CIV IV has me addicted!
Dang it, I caught a severe case of a sickness called "One More Turn!"

For all it's simplicity, I know what you mean. 1 turn, one more turn, oh, twenty more turns, oh, I need to finish this war/construction. Well I may as well finish conquering the continent first. Well, I've already missed the first 15 minutes of a rather dreary class, lets just keep going.... It was sunday last time I checked, what happened!

It was just one of those "you never get a second chance to make a good first impression" moments with CiV4.

I started my first game with a huge world with a small number of Civs so I could get a bit built up before taking on my first enemy.........so what does the game give me?...........another CiV practically on my doorstep competing for the very terrain I need to establish a viable Civ....exactly what my chosen setup parameters were supposed to preclude. The game never got another moment of my already congested playing time.

Finally got around to buying Civ 4 (£15 including both expansions) at Christmas. Have barely played it; it's very polished now but the "been there, done that" feeling was overwhelming, not so much "just one more turn" as "sod this, I'll play Armageddon Empires instead".

Yep , Civ was my all time favourite game. yet Civ 4 , wildly applauded and well received just failed to raise more than a C+ from myself.
Slow and indifferent and too much of the same for someone who had played them all from colonisation  through all the 'clones to Civ 4.

still if newer gamers are loving it then best of luck to them. i find CM 07 .. Madden 07 .. Pro Evo 6 .. Fifa 07 Call of duty 4 all mightily yawnsville now.. and consequently haven't bought the 08 version of any of them.. At least its not like the movies where the  original is the best thing ever .. them come 2, 3, 4 ,5 ,6  etc where the higher the number the worse the movie.

I felt exactly the same way......just sub Armageddon Empires for Star Wars: Empires at War.

Beyond the Sword was fairly decent. And I am a hardcore player from WAY back in the Civ 1 days. I like a lot Civ IV had to offer and there was a decent amount of improvement.

But... I haven't played much Beyond the Sword due to how AWESOME Sins of a Solar Empire is. Seriously, it kicks major butt!

Civ4's first hour bored me beyond belief. I walked away and after I returned a couple of hours later, suddenly it wasn't boring anymore. Problem is, I bought the expansion, which turned out to be a ripoff, and went deeper in the game than I think they wanted to program it. I decided I hated the political and space race victories, so I took those out, and from that point on played primarily under the notion of winning by dominating the board. The problem with that, is that I got my war started so late as Germany, mostly due to waiting for the panzer unit and staying somewhat ahead in tech, that the game was pretty close already to where alot of people that play political or space race victories would be over. When you play the game as I did at that point, you had a lot more total units out there and it could only get worse. The end result was that I stopped playing it due to CTD's late game.

Somewhat tragic is the fact that the newest expansion was far more worth the price than the 1st expansion was, but by then they had already got me mad, and when I saw the list of improvements and features in the expansion, there was no hint whatsoever of them fixing the late game CTD's nor in fixing any memory leaks, so naturally I didn't buy the latest expansion. How pathetic is it that you brag on how long you can play a game, then put out two expansions and don't seem to even try to fix late game CTD's? I doubt I will ever buy a Sid product again after that injustice.

I think mileage varies.  I have almost never had a crash on late game huge epic maps.  I don't begrudge your opinion because I've heard of similar issues on Apolyton but I think you're the exception to the rule that it's pretty stable.

I've enjoyed all the series actually.  Each one brings something new and different.  I do think the expansions are a bit of a rip because they have features that really should have been in there to begin with.  And the spy bug in BTS was ridiculous.  I too turn off some of the victory conditions as they just aren't fun but the nice thing is you have the ability for all those options!

Oh, inbetween the lines you will see that I'm saying it was stable, that is, if you count political/space race victories as worthy of your time; I do not. The original game did have frequent CTD's but somewhere around the first expansion this decreased considerably, but the hopelessness of my position with the game, is that not only do I know the last expansion did nothing for my problem, but also that so few people play deep enough into the game that they will experience what I did. IOW, they sort of have no reason to fix it, because the complaint level will never reach a high enough pitch. Without the game being long enough to where I can take at least 75% of the board, without CTD's, I have no further reason to play it. My only remaining hope would be to start in the industrial age, or elsewise to eliminate some inbetween ages, but I don't know if all those options are possible, however I do know I can select a beginning and ending age. Just throwing the idea in my head, playing in the industrial onwards sounds like it would take too much of the research out of the game and just make it pretty much a generic unit war. True, things do get more boring when you have researched virtually everything, and are therefore in a generic unit war, but at least the end fighting was ramped up to over the long course of the game.

Oh, I forgot something. Here is the HUGE problem with a guy like me, besides CTD's, with Civ4. The death rays from the sky. I think I edited it to strike very infrequently, so no problem there really, but the stock game is disasterous. Do you know what those things do. Think about it a minute. You can nuke a city a get some decent damage and cause fallout. Of course nukes and fallout cause the death rays. The Ai doesn't seem to clean these up so it gets unplayable after some time. Strangely enough, the death ray is worse than the nukes. The death ray will strike a tile and turn it into utter desert waste; completely destroying improvements. Oh, if you hadn't figured it out already, these death rays of which I speak are the Algore element to the game, the global warninh nonsense. Now think about the stupidity fo this. What has ever happened to the world due to the alleged global warming? Absolutely nothing; maybe a slight temperature variance if anything, but that's not what you get in the game. What's more, think there have been two nukes set off in history correct? There was radiation which over the years killed more people and it went away over more time I would imagine. No, not really. The last bit was correct, but not the first bit. There have not been two nukes, as used on Japan, there have literally been over TWO THOUSAND due to nuclear testing, and where is the blasted global warming for it as depicted in this game????????????????????????

Without tuning down the global warming, aka death ray, I was getting my territory nuked by death rays roughly four tiles a turn, and it keeps getting worse. I suppose they threw in such a ludicrous model in order to stop you from finding what a CTD nightmare a really long game would show you, though they bragged about being able to play games really long. With all your territory getting so heavily nuked, you will not be able to support your armies very long and literally your territory will go back to the Stone Age, without being able to build Stone Age units anymore. What a waste of time.

It seems like the late game of Civ3 was much better and didn't CTD on you.

Basically it's supposed to model so-called glogal warming. When you start having fallout it will attack various tiles. I can't remeber if I ever had a unit in one of those tiles, but if I did it completely wiped them out too. It will turn ALL tiles to desert that it hits. All you can do with desert, IIRC, is irrigate it for two food, if that. I'm not too sure on this point, but I think it will level all tiles to desert, even mountainous ones. It conspicuously had a disproportion of strikes against my capitol city's fat cross , which of course previously was my highest producing one. When I quit that game approximately HALF of that city's fat cross tiles had been destroyed. Strangely enough, the strikes leave the city's themselves completely alone. This can become largely a non-factor if you know what portion of what file to edit. Unfortunately I haven't played it in so long I have no idea where that is.

Well death rays may not be a very accurate term if indeed they do not detroy units, but Grossly Exaggerated Enviromental Devastation probably sounded too scientific. Here's hoping you can play the game without having to resort to the limitations I had to.

Oh, BTW, I just remembered what stopped a lot of the CTD's I was having earlier in the game. Part of it was some adjustments they made, but when I got an additonal 1gig of memory that helped quite a bit more. I can only wonder if turning the computer into a 3GB or 4GB machine would solve the problem. It's pretty pathetic when the programing is so bad that what is basically a turn-based game ends up needing more memory than anything else you have played.

I have civ4 with the play the world expansion pack. If you liked the generic game, wait till you try the senarios. I specifically liked the "tet" scenarios.

Just one more turn, ilovestrategy, and your journey to the darkside will be complete!

I believe you.

I'm running the game with 4 gigs DDR800 and a 768mb nVidia card with the game's graphic specs all the way up.

Very solid, no crashes but the scrolling screen refresh can still jerk but ever so slightly.

The game plays lightning fast. But bad/insufficient RAM can kill this game.
