U.S.S. Lindsey. Hit while leading a mine sweeping unit off Okinawa by two Kamikazes on 12 April 1945. She made it back to the states and with a new bow she rejoined the fleet.

Why din't they just scrap her? Although Olympic probably had not been canceled yet. The planners were probably trying for every ship they could get.

I dont understand the damage pattern. Did the Kamikazes hit her from below?

I kind of doubt they had full watertight integrity up forward of the bridge...

Still, she was only one destroyer...

The shipyard probably considered her a challenge. Use her for the new apprentices to practice on. Or as my former skipper always said when he handed us a ridiculous assignment--"Consider it a training opportunity".

Kamikaze probably had an armor piercing bomb attached that went below decks and hit the forward magazine. Hence the up and out appearance of the twisted metal.

Ammo explosion in the forward magazines?

Doesn't look like it was a bomb, guess the Kamikaze just hit it in a vital spot casuing an explosion. I found this about the hits it took:

quote:

Sky is full of Kamikaze, all over the place. Lindsay just took a hit in starboard quarter. Few minutes later another plane dove on them, we were all shooting at it. Hit the Lindsay just forward of the bridge and exploded, right on top of Tony’s damage control station. If he was not aft fighting the other fire, he is certain to have bought the farm.

The Lindsay was zigzagging at top speed when the second plane hit and blew off the bough. It submarined and went almost straight down. The skipper threw the ship in reverse and it came back up like a cork. That was quick thinking. His action probably saved a lot of lives.

I found out later Tony was killed. He will be reported, “Missing in Action”.

I found it here:

Hi brother is Tony, Leon was aboard the Yuma. His diaries are a fascinating read.

Looks like the forward magazine may have blown.

The US wasn't the only ones who pulled off some pretty spectacular damage control. See the state of the CA Myoko here.

Stern blown off, and survived to the end of the war in that state.

This is what it takes to get a ship decommissioned after a kamikaze attack.

Exactly. There was HMS Javelin, which got hit by two torpedoes from a German destroyer forward and aft on November 29th, 1940. This left just the center 155 feet of the ship afloat, length before "surgery" was 353 feet. The ship was repaired, it took all of 1941 to do that.

HMS Belfast took a hit from a magnetic mine on November 21st, 1939. The ship had been in commission for just three-and-a-half months. Major structural damage, the back of the hull was broken. Repair entailed the fitting of external bulges along the Ship's center section (literally braces for the hull) still easily to be seen on the ship as it lies in the Pool of London. Repairs lasted from November 1939 to October 1942. If this had happened later in the war the ship would have been declared a constructional total loss.

And something from WWI, where the remaining halves of HMS Zulu and HMS Nubian were nailed together to produce HMS Zubian.

Well not to mention the Tulagi undeads, saved from Tassafaronga terrible night... Now really one should wonder if American warships really need bows that bad to float on!
