First of all let me congratulate the staff on this fine wargame. An eminently credible simulation of the conflict, with a truly challenging AI!

My question regards the influence (if any) of Fleets on sieges taking place in coastal provinces. The fact you can purchase weapons for ships, frigates, and ironclads which have siege value implies there is. However in several campaigns I've played (as the Union side against a CSA computer opponent) there doesn't seem to be any effect. Can Fleets participate in sieges against forts/cities in coastal provinces?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

You mean ocean-going fleets? No, they're not involved in sieges (other than dropping off invasion forces). If/when we do an expansion we might do more with coastal forts and sieges.

Thanks for your comments on the game. Good to know you're enjoying it.

Yes I was referring to ocean-going Fleets. Thank you for clearing up the point for me.

Indeed, allowing appropriately armed Fleets to participate in sieges against coastal forts and cities would enhance historical accuracy IMO.

As you've probably figured out by now, we don't distinguish between inland and coastal forts. So if we gave fleets the power to bombard then there's be a few rather odd sieges. In the expansion, however, we might designate some forts as coastal, and then create those additional siege options. We think we did the right thing focusing primarily on the land war, but in the future it would be nice to flesh out the naval part of the game a bit more. (No promises, since we have such a long list of new features that we want to add that we can't do everything.)

Gil,

A "quick-fix" workaround you might want to consider is simply to allow gunboats to be transported by Fleets. This would work exactly as it does now for land units except that gunboats could only embark and un-load in river provinces. In this way at least sieges in coastal river provinces could benefit from additional "sea-borne" support. And since many of the prime targets for Union amphibious operations are coastal river provinces this workaround might go a long way for a relatively low level of effort.

I agree regarding your initial focus on land warfare - it clearly predominated during this conflict.

It's an interesting idea, but not as simple as you might think because while the code for it probably wouldn't be too involved for Eric (= programmer), he'd also have to train the AI to do this. And that's going to involve some work.
