Shark7 please stay out

This is my first PBEM and my first time that I play this scenario, and last but not least I don't know my opponent. Surely he more strong that me but I play to learn and for fun.

Usually you write only for Grand Campaign scenario and I think this AAR will be a bit boring for you, sorry. I'm a beginner therefore I'm writing it to receive some hints and advices about WitP.

I'd really appreciate any participation

Guadalcanal Scenario with Ben Schimdt's Mod (slot n° 80)

Ok, I'm the Japanese, I don't know if the scenario is well-balanced but at start is hard for me.

Before 14 days I don't have CVs and I think that isn't possible to keep Tulagi e Lunga, the Allied has several division ready for invasion against my poor defense (only Naval Guard/SNFL and eng. units and 0 fortifications).
I'll try to evacuate these units once time they will be attacked, I think with SS or barges because the AP/AKs will be surely sunk. I have create some barges at Shortlands and sent them to Tulagi and Lunga.

- First objective is to reinforce tha main bases Shortlands, Rabaul, Lae and Buna.
- Second is to prepare another two base for support: Admiralty Islands and Madang, I've sent eng units for the expansion.
I've almost depleted Truk of supply and fuel to fill the above bases.
- Third is to wait until the main allied attack and then to try a counter attack, may be.

I've formed two SCTFs to bombard Gili Gili base, I don't think that will be useful but surely funny

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 54,91

Attacking force 1369 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 38

Defending force 2110 troops, 14 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 64

Japanese max defense: 67 - adjusted defense: 202

An AAR on this shor scenario should be interesting. may i suggest you to provide some screenshots?
Don't waste your crack zero pilots on long sweep missions. Save them to fight against the wildcats that will cover the american landings at Lunga!

Shark7 has immediately started the Solomons invasion, all his main ships are in front of Lunga.
In addition he has started air raids on Rabaul and Lae.

My subs are in excellent position but I've know your ASW, two SS have been hit several times (flt 85 both) for two torpedos hit on CA San Francisco.

I think that my barges will be sunk next turn, that desperately try to arrive at Lunga/Tulagi, but I can't to leave these units alone.

My naval bombardment has made a good job at Gili Gili.

No good turns for me

His invasion has begun and after two days of combat I lost Lunga and Tulagi will fall soon, may be next turn.

Of course, your ships have done a slaughter of my barges but frankly, I don't know how to save the units over there.
I can't send nothing there because I don't have enough air cover.

My subs sank one AP but two of them made the same death.

My air counterattack has been somewhat bloody, I met a strong CAP over the CVs, F4F-F Wildcat have shoot down several Zero and Betty.
All Betty miss the target.

You are right, he's bouncing my fighter because they follow my Zero at low altitude and also they were at extended range.

I miss of the CVs...

I get a thrashing in last turn, my air attack clashed against his fighters wall and I have losted almost all Zero/Betty.

The good news is that Tulagi garrison hold-down the invasion force, the 1st USMC Para Battalion has vanished!
I'll try a counterattack in the next turn.

quote:

Wise word...

Dauntless and Avenger hit Shortlands base, some damage on the airfiled.

All in all the barges have been useful, some infantry squads have evacuated Lunga in safe .

He has concentrated many bombers on PM and they are hitting Lae and Buna.

Continue air attack and land attack on Sasebo 6th SNLF, situated between PM and Buna, while it search the safety.

Raid on Shortlands and Lae but all airfield damage have been repaired.

Finally a sub managed to sink something, the DM Montgomery

In general my SS operations aren't good, I losted two subs and several ones damaged for a little return.

Tulagi garrison has tried an counter attack but without success, now we are in a stalemate situation.

Do you have any consistent surface fleet in the area? Some CAs would do fine---

Opps, sorry for the pic...

At the moment I have only few CA/CLs and some DDs, with these ships I created two SC TFs and sent them on Shortlands.
In the next turns I'll try a night bombardement attack on Lunga with the hope to intercept his ships, the problem is that he has several CA/DDs on escort.
We will see...

As soon as I'll receive the CV/BBs I'll try a counter attack, tomorrow I'll write my plan.

mmmm...watch the fatigue levels of the betties. They're lethal, yes, but only if their fatigue and morale is in good shape.
However 2 CAs out of action is a very good result!
How many CVs does he have? and where are they?

Not so good, they have suffered several losses.

I'm pretty sure that he has 3 may be 4 CVs, three are near Lunga.

Future Plan

Shortly I'll receive 2 CVs and 1 CVL, few BBs, several CAs and many DDs.
Of course, I don't try an engagement against his CVs but I'll try to retake Lunga and reinforce Tulagi at least.
If I'll manage to push out his force from Solomons and I divert him on fake targets, perhaps I'll be able to contein the offensive.

I believe that after these two last turns he'll send the ships (not all) at Noumea for refuelling/raparation, during this time I'll prepare four invasion forces with the follow targets:

Before all I'll try to severely damage PM airfield with all my LB left, but I don't know if are enough...

Alpha: to capture Gili Gili with one base force and 2/3 naval guard units.

Bravo: to capture Ndini with a little unit.

Charlie: to reinforce Tulagi with one engineer unit and 2/3 naval guard units and overkill the enemy force.

Delta: to regain Lunga with one base force, 1/2 engineer unit, 1 infantry brigade and several naval guard units.
Here he has attacked with a whole division at least.

If I recall correctly, those CVs do arrive with somewhat depleted squadrons (about 20 Zeros where it should be 27 etc.). Make sure you check that and make sure you have planes and pilots (you are short of these or will be soon) in your pool to fill them up.

Well... closing a big AF like PM in that scenario is something I never managed to do, even with 4 daitais of Betties, even when throwing in Lilies and Sallies. Allies are more successful in this discipline...

One problem is that I never could keep up the pressure, whereas Allied engineers are much more effective than yours. Like GH said somewhere above: Morale drops quickly in those units - even after successful missions with hardly any losses-, fatigue increases...

My feeling is that the best way to shut down PM in this scenario is securing Gili Gili to improve fighter cover you can provide for your ships and go for bombardment attack.

quote:

Alpha: to capture Gili Gili with one base force and 2/3 naval guard units.

This would be one of my favourite objectives.

quote:

Bravo: to capture Ndini with a little unit.

As a diversion - why not.

quote:

Charlie: to reinforce Tulagi with one engineer unit and 2/3 naval guard units and overkill the enemy force.

Bear in mind that you will need to keep those troops supplied in order to keep them efficient. Only commit if you are sure you can guarantee this in the face of enemy air superiority. Be aware that if your opponent commits a lot of engineer units, Lunga can be a Level 4 airfield very soon - I have seen 1 level AF increase every 3-5 days. On the other hand, even if you LRCAP it wil be from a distance.

Therefore, check whether reinforcing Tulagi is realistic. If your troops are not well supplied now, more troops may be less so.

quote:

Delta: to regain Lunga with one base force, 1/2 engineer unit, 1 infantry brigade and several naval guard units.

Not sure whether the troops you assign her will be sufficient (but there may be better experts than me).

One thing I think you need to start working on now is additional but secure Level 4 airfields. You need them for your Betties. The available ones -Lae, Kavieng, Rabaul for the present strategic situation, if the AF levels are like stock in the game you play- are or will be soon in B17 range - and at least in stock B17s can be quite good at closing AFs, much better than any of your planes. It takes forever to have Jap engineers build something, so plan well ahead...

Just some thoughts from my (limited) experience. Good luck !

Hartwig

Well... now that you mention it... but I think I read about it earlier than that... in an AAR featuring AW1Steve as Allied and you as Nippon e.g.... So I think it can be considered a well tested Allied strategy
