Hi there While waiting for my download I discovered an AWESOME demo. Combat Mission, at www.battlefront.com a very small download of 30MB gets you 2 scenarios of US vs Germans. Try it out I promise your eyes will pop out. Now turn up the speakers and happy hunting.

To each his own. I have no use at all for 3D game. Find most of them really lame.

Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy BOTH games. I've always been a fan of the Steel Panthers series. I bought Combat Mission after I picked my jaw up off the floor from playing the demo. :-) The one I play at any given time depends on my mood. I know that both will find room on my hard drive for a long time. Cardinal Fang Nobody Expects The Spanish Inquisition!

CM's a good game. Drake its not like Quake or Unreal. Its turn based using the We-go system. The graphics and sounds are BMP & wave files so there are lots of mods (improved graphics and sounds) to download. Don't let the 3D fool ya its a wargame all the way. BomBeer

CM is indeed a great game, with a completely different approach from SP. Both are great games and both should be enjoyed. Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

Why not? Well, because I, for one, have become saturated and disappointed with eye-candy for eye-candy's sake. And it's far more essential to me to find an intelligent, well conceived and consistently applied game routine. While it shouldn't matter if it be 2D or 3D, candidly speaking, 3D is still somewhat primitive and imperfect as it tends to fuzz out - the closer you look, and yes, I still simply prefer a good game in 2D like our SPWAW and Diablo II (alao being 2D) still proves quite pleasant to the eyes . . . I can and will hereafter . . . live to play . . . without the 'hype' Albert [This message has been edited by Graf Speer (edited September 24, 2000).]

For what it's worth, I prefer 2d exclusively over 3d. I'm not saying that 3d is wrong for anyone else, but I *HATE* it with a passion. That having been said, there's Close Combat and Steel Panthers. Since I prefer turn based over continous action, I end up playing Steel Panthers more. Tom I might end up buying CC5, and perhaps Freedom Ridge (one is WW2, the other turn based squad/individual man level). Tom

Well, didn't know I'd spark a fire. Just was sharing what I felt is a good game. Both have been etched to my hard drive forever. For those that say 3D is "fuzzy" or is a continues real time CM is turn base and uses a plot orders then see what happens. give it a try. SP and CM are great games. Hats off to both games. See ya all in the online rooms soon, when I get cocky from fraggin the 'puter and need real foes. Happy hunting all.

Actually, I like both games. One's in 2D, the other, 3D. SPWAW offers for a larger scale, and (for now) encompasses a larger number of combatant nations, and theaters. CM really does a great job simulating tactical WWII combat, and enhances it with the 3D environment. So, bravo! to both

You did nothing wrong, Bob. Your comments and observations are welcome. I worked on CM for 18 months on their alpha and beta teams. In fact, I was in charge of the scenario design team. A number of my scenarios are on their CD. I still actively support the game. So no problem. Don't feel badly about mentioning it here. We do support that game with two web sites at The Gamers Net. Boots N' Tracks on the RAider Page http://wbr.thegamers.net (then click on Boots N Tracks) Combat Mission HQ http://combathq.thegamers.net Pay them a visit. That's better, Bob IOW's, the original topic claim was "why play 2D" . . . especially when we can have 3D . . . which you now thoughtfully support with some concrete play example and may not, afterall, be so dependent on just "eye-ball" subjectivity Again, I don't care much about the 2D vs 3D 'controversy' at this point as much as I simply care about finding a game that offers a plethora of options and challenging replay. Perhaps, bottom line to your original notion of "why 2D" is that if someone decided to make Steel Panthers 3D, I would not be moved in the least, unless it offered more options, more replay challenges. Still holding out for 4D games, maybe Albert ------------------ The Good Nazi [This message has been edited by Graf Speer (edited September 25, 2000).]

CM and SPWAW are both great games. While I think that CM is superior in many respects (no bugs!), I have played SPWAW a lot more recently.

Here again, the major quality of SP series shines through: it's versatility. Now with all the upgrades in the game and the ability to recreate so many situations, battles, etc (which you cannot do in CM - Only Western Europe June 44-May 45)I tend to think that this versatility gives SP the edge. Graphics are important to me. But how the game plays and what I can do with it is even more important. Just as anything else, new car, new suit, new house, I want it to look good, but I want it to have some versatility. SP does offer a lot of that. ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

What? You mean being able to travel back in time if things turn out badly? We've already got that option, it's called the save button. ;-)
