How many pilots did you managed to save from these massacres?.

Did you have subs present in the battle hexes ?

It seems to me you have identified a simple change they could make to eliminate some of these problems. Instead of having piece meal strikes against individual TFs, and letting each strike get chewed up in turn by the uber cap, they could combine all the seperate strikes that take place in one hex for purposes of air combat and resolve the air combat all at once. Then, after air combat resolution, the strikes could be redivided to go after the individual TFs the AI initially had assigned them to.

I wonder if my women will ever understand men and their war gaming addictions...
Was in the middle of a veery interesting combat replay and I got multiple questions
regarding a H&M advertisement on the tv in the background

I don't know Wild Willie - lots of pilots lost despite of subs in most hexes.
Shinden pilot losses are usual a lot lower than the rest - that's the good news.

There are indeed many approaches to make the Uber CAP less effective Cap & Gown.
Hope they will find the best solutions for AE! Me thinks to little attention is paid to
the late war phase. When huge number of ships, TFs and strikes are involved complete chaos
reigns.

Well, another carrier TF from Marcus will arrive to reinforce Andy tomorrow.
Today we bloodied another whole batch - again at a high price but not to bad really.

I found an opening and sent in lots of Shindens to Amami - I knew lots would be destroyed
on the ground but this was the most effective way of engaging his CAG. Each time Andy
is forced to divert his 4Es one of the Okinawa bases is reopened for business.

Must admit that we need some time for R&R ourselves now, but Andy must be running low on CAP
fighters now. Today he landed another huge batch of troops. Now he has 300 000 thousand troops
on our little atoll Tokyo Rose talks about 5 Marines lying on top of each other for each square meter
of atoll.

Andy did force a 1-1 odds today, but while we lost 7500 casualties he lost 17500!!

Not sure he can afford this, we will wreck his entire Army before Amami falls.
We will continue our efforts to harass the enemy and bring in more troops.
Losses is not an issue, the longer we fight now the less time the enemy will have to prepare for an
invasion of the Home Islands.

I haven't returned this turn to Andy yet, lots of micro management before the turn is done and it's late
already. Just 2 more days and it's Easter vacation. Going to Tenerife on Saturday, will be a good weeks break
then.

Turn sent to Andy.

He told me that 33 CVEs have been sunk so far with another 2 crippled and 7 damaged now in India.
This leaves 20 for operations. They can still carry 500 fighters though.

It is time to gather strength for that last crucial blow that will send the enemy into the canvas.
This is also the most difficult strike as resources are running low.

Well, the turn is sent, so this advise is pointless I suppose. But do you think it might be wise to use the fighters to LRCAP Amami on the assumption that that is where most of the action will take place? That way you would have your escorts. Or does LRCAP count as an escort when a bombing mission is resolved?

Edit: I should add: losing 61 Liberators has got to hurt!

Nope, LRCAP does not count as escort - they show up on the screen when the bombers arrive but
enemy CAP will not engage them.

LRCAP is also less effective than sweeps and any survivors will clash with enemy CAP at the end
of the turn - and losses are always terrible for Japan because of radar.

It is possible that Andy will move his fleet out from Amami again, he has landed another contingent
of troops and now has to rest them for 2-3 days before attacking again. That will be the true test...

Bad news guys - the Taiho was surprised in port by a surface combat TF and badly shot up!!
She's at 92 sys, 96 flood and 25 fires. Can disband her in a size 3 port but that won't help so I'm scuttling her.

3 X Banzai for the Taiho

I scuttled her today under 3 x Bansai salutes from her crew that was rescued.
Kinda suitable that the enemy didn't get the last hand on her and that she went down
fighting and not docked up for the rest of the war.

A relatively quiet turn - only a few ac were launched as I re-organized air units
and awaited Andys move. Numerous new kamikaze units have been readied.

After the last bombardments of the Okinawas damaged Shindens have been destroyed and allowed
me to move the cadre units back with their surviving pilots to reform. Ca 60+ % of the pilots are
still alive, mostly rookies that are gone. Need to rebuild them now as quickly as possible.

Here's todays good news:
Enemy battleship South Dakota reported sunk - cause: severe 14" shell poisoning ala Fuso.
Enemy heavy cruiser St Paul reported sunk - cause: acute 18.1" shell shock ala Yamato.

Look at this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bombardment at Amami 18-11-45 AV: 5536 vs 1682
Enemy attack on Amami 15-11-45: AV 7085 vs 1612

Does this mean that the enemy is weakening or did Andy's bombardment attack today not show his
entire AV strenght? 50k less troops show up today compared to yesterday - did they all go AWOL
after listening to Tokyo Ross?

It can't be that Andy is evacuating...that's wishful thinking I guess!-)

Another day with heavy losses - for both sides.
Enemy reinforcements arrived and as expected we suffered accordingly.

Tried to send more fast kamikaze strike ac in today with lots of escorts.
Our main effort was hampered when Nagasaki, as the only base today, was closed by bad
weather in the AM phase. This meant that Kagoshima strikes went in AM and Nagasaki strikes
went in PM, allowing the enemy CAP to re-organize.

It's really tough to fight both weather and Uber CAP in order to achieve coordinated strikes.

Andy also sent some B-29s to hit Mitsubishi engine production.
Its weird how much info he gets, not once have he hit other engine plants than Mitsubishi, how
the heck does he know that we got plenty of everything but Mitsubishi

Todays good news:

A replenishment CVE went down, taking with it 52 Hellcats
Another cve was hit by 2 kamikazes.

In all another 130 enemy CAG ac were shot down.
Our own losses were heavy and now I have to re-organize for another day or two, but there are options.

The biggest question is whether to put 200 Shindens on Kadina or not.
The base is 100% operational again.

Andy will immediately spot this and send his hoards in to subdue it.
This will take the burden off Amami again but cost us more casualties on the ground.

I've tried to set Shindens on Amami on sweep missions over Amami twice, and they've not responded.
So I'm a bit hesitant at going at it again. It is possible to put 40% on escort mission and hope they engage
enemy CAG - again a gamble. Another option is to put em all on LRCAP over Amami and let Andy's heavies pound
Kadina instead of Amami. Got potential but is also risky. The last option is to put all Shindens on CAP and
attrit enemy long range fighters and bombers. They are all completely worn down and another spanking would
disrupt Andy's plans.

What is your advice gents?
I'll need some time to prep the next turn before sending it to Andy, this is your chance to influence history
Another few kicks and the enemy capitalist card house will collapse!

You set a hard 'homework' PzB

I found that LR CAP ambush is best option against our dearest Scot. But there is a many options indeed. Does he can bombard your base (with ships?)

regarding no escort. I have similar experience. When i do not set land based CAP or LR CAP over the base enemy bombers coming without escort. When i set fighters on CAP/LRCAP enemy fighers protecting the bombers. I suspect that Andy is using escort options (but with no destination target). Think that computer "cheats" since it know if there is enemy CAP/LRCAP. But i could be wrong.

Now what is strange is that last attack came from CVs (in my exp CV fighers always escorting bombers)..

but i agree, Andy certainly has some magic skills. He got me not only once with good prediction...

I decided against sending out the Shindens - wanted to build up a stronger force first
and I got a couple of really cunning plans cooking

Andy bombards mostly the Okinawas with heavy ships but results have been disappointing - for him.
He sent some bombers back to Kagoshima today - including fighters. No idea why he's doing this, I'm desperately
trying to shoot down as many CAG fighters as possible.

Ok, we're into the last 100 days of this game - Le Grande Finale

Have you been able to rebuild the forts on Amami? Looks like his ground attacks have ceised.

Honestly, if i was placing a bet i'd put it on you. Sheer outright losses seem to be less of a factor now, Andy just has to much he has to carve through for any real victory. To many negative factors working against him.

Forts can't be rebuilt (not in practice at least).
Repairs of port - runways - service levels have to be completed before forts can be completed
and since it's impossible to turn of repairs....

Well, Andy is willing to send in everything he got - and that's 10 fold more than we got.
So we can only hang in there for those last 100 days and see how it goes.
Appreciate the support though

Today we saw a deliberate attack on Amami that just managed a 1-1 odds.
10k enemy and 3.5k friendly losses.

I'm beginning to think and hope that Andy may have to send in another load of troops to do the job!

Andy also informed that he's going to Scotland for the weekend....
Since I'm going to Tenerife tomorrow this game may be put on hold for the rest of the month.
If they have an ok Internet con at the hotel I may get of some turns.

Will be good with some sun, bloody cold here still!

Back from a week in the sun!
Was dang difficult to get Internet access in Tenerife - not to talk about pc with available USB slot and Internet.

Sent the patched up CS Nisshin to draw out enemy carriers. Of course it was found by an enemy sub.
From 45 sys to 65. Andy's carriers didn't react either, search planes were set on short range again.

We had to be satisfied with a few good hits on cve's instead.

Thx guys - good to be back but it was also good with a weeks break from the puter!

Don't even think the Nisshin was anywere near the Independence's TF...
Was a sub spotting no doubt.

For tomorrow: New tactic - LR CAP of Amami with Reppus, Franks, Tonys and Randys.
Not sure how many I managed to muster: ca 250 I guess.

Bombers on spread anti shipping strike missions.

I'm hoping for some good hits on enemy 4Es as well as CAG fighters.
The latter will fight it out with my LR CAP when the transport ac comes in.
Our losses will be something like 85% - only hope we take enough enemies with us.

BONSAI!!

Good hits on the yankee CVE's and the CVL...

I just dont understand why they didn't have any CAP airborne .

Andy running out of fighters?, or where they already damaged and unable to fly CAP ?

They must have been damaged previously:

E13A1 Jake x 14

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 1

Allied Ships
CVE Block Island, Bomb hits 1, heavy damage  (this from a single 60Kg Jake bomb???......)

Yes, many of the cve's were cripples.
Still important to sink them - today 2 went down with 100 CAG fighters and bombers
The CVL was without any CAP indeed, so Andy is either getting a bit sloppy or running out of fighters.

Todays LRCAP missions over Amami were indeed expensive - but worthwhile I think.
We chopped up large number of enemy 4Es, some LBA Mustangs and more CAG fighters.

It's when the going gets tough you have to squeeze out that extra strength.
Just as the enemy thinks you are down for the count and can't take anymore - then you have to hit him again
and force the marines to dance

PzB,

First congratulations on what has obviously been a very well played game on your part. I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind. I suspect the answers are buried in th 150 pages of AAR here but I am not sure I could find them if I tried.

1. I am amazed at the volume of aircraft you are able to put into the air at this point. Was you opponent unable to do much to affect resource and oil coming to the HI to slow or disable your industry?

2. I notice your opponent seems a bit desparate in his actions pushing an offensive that obviously he is not truly prepared for. Is this becasue the late date and he is trying for a knockout blow before he runs out of time?

3. Your opponent is not attacking your industry at all. Is this a recent change to support his current operations or has he not pursued this line at all? I suspect it would not matter at this point. Are your replacement pools pretty full?

Again, well played. So few games reach this far and I suspect it is becasue you have pushed your opponent to the limits before the inevitable fall back towards the HI

Eventful day - lots of small actions and another deliberate attack on Amami!
Only a 0-1 result ...but Andy got lucky and his engineers reduced forts another notch.
Still, it may be possible to deadlock the enemy for a bit longer and wear down their troops even further.
Another 10000 casualties today while we 'only' suffered 4000.

Dehli, surprisingly, held against another attack.

I also risked sending in lots of barges and smaller supply and troop ships with reinforcements as it looks like
Andy is refueling and reloading his major TFs. Andy of course spotted this and more than a dozen ships were hit,
but not many were sunk. The captains have been ordered to drive their ships ashore and unload their troops and supplies.

This also has a secondary mission as it draws enemy fire: GAGs hit the ships again and again.
Our smaller kami strikes only hit a transport today and bad weather saved more enemy cripples.

Both sides lost ca 50 ac each today.

Thanx Vettim, it has been a loong struggle and a lot of pages

Andy took over the game in a state were the Allies were hanging behind the historical time line and he has been
running after the train ever since. Allied subs have been efficient - maybe Jap ASW has been too efficient?
Industry has been left mostly alone and I've managed to hoard enough HI points to last for another year, so there's nothing
Andy can do about it by now. There are deficiencies but with only a few months left I'm throwing most of the reserves on the fire.
Still some thousand ac left in the pools.
