Every time I watch a war movie with a sand table in it gets my blood up. What are some of the best that you have seen? One of my favorites would have to be in 'Tora! Tora! Tora!'

The best sand table i ever saw,,was an early Western Gunfighting game,, 4x6 and we made all the terrain for a town, surrounding ranches, etc,, we played the game with 54 mm brittains.  we also played Colonial skirmish by the same "Gang" and had different buildings etc,,and used 25 mm everything for the game!!  I know this is not a "Movie" sand table, but it beat anything I have ever seen hands down... hehe prolly because we played on it for a 3 or 4 year run!!  awesome series of campaigns we had,,

The Longest Day had a sand table scene of the French Commando attack on the port town of Quistreham (sp?...I know I butchered that one terribly).

Much of the footage of the assault was taken from a bird's eye perspective so that it was a lot like looking down on the sand table as the commandos moved toward the fortified casino. Bogged down from heavy fire from the casino, the French commander, Kieffer, ran back through the enemy fire to bring some tanks forward from the beaches that proceeded to blow the hell out of the casino.

It was the best "battle footage" in the entire movie.

It's been a while since I've seen 'The Longest Day', I will have to take a look.
