While talking to someone from Bavaria, he told me that they called people from the Kiel area "Fish Heads"
Knowing that there are a few people from that area of the world on this blog, could you enlighten me?
Is this considered a vulgar or insulting term?
Has it been around long?

"Fischkopp", plural "Fischköppe", is generally okay for people from the coastal areas. They have their own words for the people down south

Wonder what compelled BoredStiff to post those pictures? Alien larvae in his head? Insufficient tin foil in his tin foil hat?

Well I live in the northern part of Holland, and we have more in common with the folks who live in the northern part, Kiel, Hamburg, of Deutschland than our countrymen who live in the south of Holland. Houses, villages and people are the same. They, who live in the south have more in common with the ppl who live in the centre/ middle of Deutschland. And yes, we do make fun of each other
Quite strange actually, that people on the other side of the border have more in common with you than ppl who live in ones own country.
Guess it's the same in the US, East versus West and North versus South.

Hi JT,

In Canada it is that way, I live near Toronto and I dislike for the most part people from Calgary and Vise Versa.

Regards,

Greg

Thanks Josh, you are right. For instance in southern California, the San Fernando Valley, there is a place inhabited by a strange tribe called "Valley Girls!"
To quote Curly of Three Stooges fame "nyaaaaa"

Marc, thanks for the fish head info. But you now prompt another question. What do the fish heads call the poeple from the south?

Fish heads make the most excellent soup. I'd be proud to call myself a fish head eater !

To further Grell's example, those of us out here in alberta (I'm pretty close to Edmonton), constantly mock Toronto. Of course, we CAN all come together and bond over a shared mocking of Quebec.

I LOVE EDMONTON!

Had a fight with a Cannuck in the Robin Hood Inn in the Edmonton Mall...he said something about the IRA spanking the British Army or something...I was young...I took the bait...we both got slung out and went to another pub were we drank merry and patted each others backs all night.

Wow...that is a...colorful...intro to a country.

Unfortunately, times have a changed, and these days, he would either pull a knife, or track you down later with 12 friends and some baseball bats.

Really. Shame. I loved Alberta. Beautiful countryside. I was actually posted to Camp Wainwright in...erm...Wainwright.

Lovely place and nice people.

I've been to Wainwright (my brother in law is from there)...really not much to say about the town, except that you're sure glad to see it in the rear view. (for those who haven't been there, it's not a BAD town, it's just incredibly devoid of anything to do).

And, yeah, unfortunately the violence in Edmonton has jumped out of control. A lot of different reasons, I guess, but it's pretty sad.

That's a shame. It was beautiful.

And I do know what you mean about Wainwright...but there was enough to do as a squaddie on tour...drink, food and women!
