I just had to come on the boards and thank those of you who made this game possible...

A friend and I downloaded the game (and burned it onto CD at work under cover of lunchbreak), and gave it go over the last two nights. After playing our first full scenario, I just had to say how impressed I was with this.

Our joint reaction is: How is it that this is a free game? This easily blows away most 'commercial' products in quality, and it was a hell of a good time as well. We feel bad playing it, and not paying for anything. I'll be ordering a mega-campaign just to ease my guilt.

For those of you who are curious, the game turned out to be a draw. We played the 'Fuel to the Fire' scenario, and I took out the Brits. Final score was 4,200ish to 3,800ish. Great great game...

Thanks again to Matrix and everyone else who had a hand in this.

Welcome aboard Dragon. Word of warning: substance abuse facilities currently have no cure or treatment plan for SPWAW addiction; but it sounds like its too late for you anyway :D

Maybe I'll ask a question while I'm at it...

Can you do co-op scenarios online? Since my bud and I are still learning the ropes, we were thinking about running, for instance, Brits and Yanks vs. Jerry. Can you assign unassigned nations to computer AI in online games? How are 3 and 4 player games handled for allies and axis? I just want to see if it's possible, and if the engine will handle allied nations for purposes of Op fire, etc...

Thanks in advance.

You can play co-op battles online against the AI but I don't think that's possible with scenarios. There're few scenarios with 3 or 4 player support but usually random battle's are more fun to play online. In 3 and 4 player games you can asign how many slots each side has and who controls it.

Great, thanks for the reply. I didn't know what the difference between battles and scenarios were... I'll have to check that out tonight.

WinnipegDragon it's nice that you finally stumbled across the best free game out there. SPWAW is the only game that I have played more than just a few times. Most games I have purchased have had a shelf life of a few days or weeks(at the most). Enjoy the game and the board.

WinnipegDragon I would suggest what a buddy of mine and I do. We start a WWII campain game and divide the forces. Suggestion for forces. This is based on Germans, other countries vary.
Commander
Forward Observer
One battery of artillery (75's are good)

each player gets (motor, mech, or foot your choise)
One section of scouts
One company of infantry
Replace the last platoon of infantry with a platoon of tanks or a platoon of engineers.
One section of HMGs or MG tanks
One section of AT guns with tow vehicals
One section of support tanks.
One platoon of self propelled AA

We have found that you need at least three platoons of infantry to cover any map side to side. So if you get four Platoons of infantry you will be able to have one in reserve.

For non core units buy only off board artillery or Aircraft (be careful with these they should always be target at unit 15 to 20 hexes away and enter from the enemy side of the map, if they pass over your units either on entry or exit they may attack your units). Unless you have an assualt then you will need at least two platoons of engineers.

Have fun. :D
