When designing a scenario to played against the AI on the defense how does everyone handle leaders and smoke allocation?

Is it better to fix a leader in a defensive position with a critical unit, or boost the unit's morale by one or two to compensate? I've also considered adding a SP or two to replace a leader.

Should I bother giving it smoke ammo at all? The reason I ask is that its' smoke placement is usually questionable. Most of the times it seems to help my advance. Normally I see situations develop where HE would benefit the situation.

TIA

I would recommend giving the AI some smoke, it isnt always for the best, but nevertheless it adds some reality and randomness.

I would rather add leaders fixed in critical spots than adding SPs.

just my 2 cents
