1st post: Hi everyone

This is a great forum; have been snooping around for some days reading some of the topics. As for SPWAW, well having a lot of fun and my men have a tough time, my infantry skills need some practice. My wargaming experience mainly consisted from panzer general I/II/3-D, where the infantry were mainly hanging in the back of the army or shot to pieces. I sure hope they have better luck this time. Just started a new wwII long campaign (v 7.1beta after a few crashes in v7.0), as the germans. Against the advise in the tactical primer (wonderful document, thanks), i opted for a medium size force; 3x mech inf, 3x tanks (2x anti-tank, 1x support), 3 88aa/at guns, 3 150 sig inf guns (both with trucks) and a hq whit 2 inf+ 2scout units as general reserve. In my previous campaign attempt i found the battles to long (2-3 hours for advance or assault missions), now the are about an hour and even on the small map i have room to move around.

If you like i make some AAR (will do too if you dont). I will play about 1 to 2 missions a day, depending on the kind of mission and the time at hand. (for the ones wondering; i have to study for a test and spwaw is a nice way to take my mind of institutions and government organisation/management).

9/39 Poland mission 1(yesterday): delay, weather sunny and nice. The map shows forest and hills on both sides with a nice shallow valley in the middle. Should be easy and proves to be. Though the massive inf sq storming forward still can give me a good scare. Btw at this moment with 6 88aa/at, 3 of them will be changed for inf-guns at first opportunity. Polish reckon cars and tp-7’s proof to be an easy target and are gone by turn two. The grunts take some more time and even kill one reckless pzIIIe (don’t use tanks to look over ridges). Around turn 12-14 the polish are gone or retreating. The map reveals that they still had about 40 machinegun sq’s behind their line.

Btw, concerning preferences, im playing without c&c, mines and reduced squats, medium battles (but i might set them to hard in the future)

10/39 Poland mission 2: advance, weather sunny and nice. Hills and forest, could be anywhere in eastern/central Europe. 3 of the 88aa/at are exchanged for 155mm sig’s, along with prime movers (something-11) instead of the original trucks also 1 platoon (? Still have to figure out the correct names) mech inf are exchanged for eng. (with flamethrower). My new platoon of eng take the only objective in the north, the rest take the central and southern objective, well most of it. The armies meet right on the centre en southern objectives, both on overgrown hills. Both are not in spot where tanks or other big guns are of any use and it takes a few turns to get my men in the right place. The tanks are right behind my inf for support. The northern objective gives no problem, the two polish units rushing in are ripped to pieces (1x po gun sup hq 1x recon car). Around turn 8 the main resistance in the south is broken and my hq and support go on a scouting mission to the eastern objective. They only find some machine gun sq’s, no place for my hq so they just watch as my inf and tanks slowly clear the last po inf sq’s. An other easy win.

Btw2; i hardly use my support points, at best i buy some art. Pref. 105 or 150mm

5/40 france mission 1: river defend, sunny again. Just sit back and accumulate experience. Well almost one of the 4 objectives to defend is on the other side of the river. This could become a problem, i have no means to get over the river and no points for reinforcements (barrage carrier). The exposed objective is on the north end of the map with a nice amount of open space behind it (France side of the river). Well we will see what happens, i putt some of mu big guns on the north end and hope for the best. But the French chose the centre and southern route to the river (through forest, i don’t blame them). At turn 14 they give up, with all objectives still in German hands... I lost one man (hq) in an effort to give my leader some target practice (which he/they badly need, even rubber rafts proof to be to difficult to hit).

6/40 france mission 2: advance/french counter attack, night, vis 13; 75% map: this one i will start tonight. Paris is in the centre of the map, 3x neutral v point on my side (east) of the map, and one (french) far to the south-west in a small forest. Another platoon of inf had been upgraded to eng. The 88aa/at and sig 155 are on two hills east of paris, hq and support are on the northern end, 2x eng are ready to make a run ad paris and the rifle sq and tanks are in the south right under paris. Didn't use any of the odd 600 support points.

Well i hope you like it :D, at least i got to practice my English

hi don, jess,

well this afternoon, after reading some of the armor site, i did the kill a tiger scenario :D, managed to get my rangers decimated and the mg and bazooka teams on the run... The tiger was no prob, sneak up at his back, and give the crew a scare, didnt kill them though, my other tanks out of his sight but near his frontsite...

his turn, the tiger makes a 180 i prepare to write off my tank, but he misses (3 times :p ) my opfire is an other hit...

in my turn the tiger is to oppressed to fire back, my two tanks that where near his front last turn get now to shoot a tiger in his back... the miss all 6? shots... my tank that shot him in the back last turn now has a point blank shot, no more tiger.

But i look forward to my commandcar tiger, just 15-20 scenarios before the are in production :(

As for the russians, i've met them... hitting them is not the problem... all my pziii and iv shots bounced right off. But my 4 88** where the heros of the day.

As for us and brittish tanks, it will be some time before i meet them, im planning for the east-front...

A quick note on paris, im scared a bit, turn 2 showed over 30 french sq heading straight for paris and around 6 char b1's. My two centre eng. goups making a (slow) retreat... and im trying to get my tanks to push on the north and south flank...

(i talk to much)

Well im off to sleep, tomorrow im going to clear out paris, i hope

Laurents

Ohh its on now....

If I threw a rock in anger I could disable an M4

A friend of mine came up with a good anaolgy when discussing the tactics of M4's

He said and I quote "The shermans are like 30 kindergardeners armed with pen knives, and the germans are like the 23 year old teacher. You can get 10-25 of the little bastards but eventually one of them is gona get a lucky shot in a leg artery and its gona be all over"

6/40 france mission 2: advance (the French have a counter-attack mission), it’s a clear night (vis. 18). “Paris” is in the centre of the map, around 8x8 hex buildings with a big road trough the centre. Two eng. Platoons will head for the city. To the north is my hq squat and support and 5 tanks (pziiie). My third inf. platoon is on the south end of the map together with two tank groups the 88AA/at’s and the 150mm sig’s.

I more or less expect the counter-attack mission for the French, and could (should) have prepaid a defensive setup. I take the middle road (expecting the French to take the south/centre approach to “Paris”), my eng. will rush for the west end of town and hope they have set up a defensive parameter by turn two or three. The plan for my hq and support is to do a recon in the north (where i expect not to find any French). My southern troops are setup to hold the line against lots of inf.

Turn 1 gives no real surprises, my eng. take the “Paris” objective and take a defensive stand in the west of the city. In the south my man take pot-shots a the French inf that come over a ridge 4-5 hex’s down the road. The two snipers attached to the hq set for a recon mission, and don’t find much resistance (non).

Turn 2: a quick count in the north shows around 30 French inf in sight and 6 Char b1’s. they form a nice line from the town to the north. Meanwhile my eng also meet the first French in the town, they hold the line. 5 of my southern pziiie’s make a rush along east “Paris”, along with 2 88’s and 2 sig’s. The mission for now is hold the line and scare the French as much as possible, no chance i will be killing them now.

Turn 3-8 In the north i force the French to move slow, causing mainly suppression. In the town my eng have a rough time losing some men (and moving slowly backward), each sq being under attack by 2-3 French inf sq. I also shoot one of the char b1’s in the north, the other char b1’s are now in the centre of the town, and im not going near with my tanks, trying to shoot them from the north hill results in a burning pziiie. I leave the char b1’s for now. In the south there is little resistance and i start to move my rifle platoon north to the town, with my southern tanks (and 1 mg sq from the rifle platoon) pushing west to the French objective.

Turn 9 A nice surprise; French morale is broken (might have vanquish the French hq in the town...). Tough the French still are very present in the town with at least 3 inf sq and tanks on or near the centre objective. In the west part of town (covert by smoke i expect another 6 inf sq). My 3 eng in the north part of the town are all down to 5 men, 1 eng sq gone. In the south part of the town i start to gain terrain with the rifle sq’s supporting my eng.

Turn 10(-15) 22 French inf sq retreating, time to take all objectives. My eng sq (7 men) take a lucky shot at a victory hex (expected one char b1 and half a inf sq there), they end up killing the inf, 3 char b1’s and crews. In the north my hq support and some tanks clean the fields, in the south two half tracks having a peek at the French objective. The rest of my southern section starts to push the inf sq to the west and north.

Another DV, but losing 43 men, 1 apc (halftrack) and 1 afv (pziiie), doubling my campaign losses.

Next up (4/41)Msus, North Africa (chose western europe... should have gone for east-front) an advance mission against the British’s. My last rifle platoon are exchanged for eng (no flamethrower this time, but a nice set of anti-tank mines).

The average exp is now around 75, only 3 units in the 90’s; my hq, 1 pziiie and 1 ge mmg sq. Morale is high.

4/41 North Africa mission 1: advance, hazy (vis 14); more like a starting sand storm. Basically the mission is: “take that hill”. In hind sight it was an easy one. Small map, 5 objectives, 2 north on the hill, 1 south just behind the hill, 2 back east. The terrain is flat with a few dunes (except for the hill to take of course). Btw, didn’t use the support points.

I have 1 plt eng. in the north; they will try to sneak past the lines. My hq and support in the centre, out of vision/range of the British, my 88 and sig’s are the second line in the centre, not much use in these conditions. The rest of my army is on the south-end of the map. The approach in the south is flat and giving little protection, but the position there is also less defendable, more of a ridge than a hill.

The southern objective is undefended, in the north my slow moving eng are shot to pieces by a overwhelming force (relative) of British inf supported by mortars and an at-gun (i lose 1 eng sq, 1 mmg sq and half of the men in the other 3 sq). My hq scouts find the centre well defended too. The southern section is split in two, my eng there move along the backside of the hill toward the north with half a plt pz ivc as support. The pz iiie plt is given a scout mission to de eastern objectives. The first pziiie taking the direct route to 1 of the eastern objectives gets a fair beating by a 40mm AA gun, the crew bail’s and get to continue the scout mission. The second pziie, moving along the south end of the map, make an unfortunate meeting with a vickers mk2 med, the crew is kill in the British turn. The last three pz iiie of the plt kill 6 vickers mk2’s the next turn, and take the two eastern objectives without much resistance, 1 hq sq :D . This leaves the two northern objectives.

The problem taking these objectives are the well placed 40mm AA guns (at that moment i located 4 of them). They effectively covert most of the open space on either side of the hill, keeping my men on the west side of the hill in a position where i cant really harm the British, and my two eng. plt’s on the south east side moving very slow and careful. After destroying the aa guns i take the northern objectives, while leaving most of the British force on the west side of the hill unharmed. The British morale broke at turn 23, and i am left with a MV...

I lost 96 men, 3 apc’s and 3 afc’s, they lose 327 men, 8 art and 6 afv’s.

Lets give my core force a name and face :D :
HQ Col. Ziegler kills 0 exp. 90
1st engineer platoon 2 lt. Riedmuller kills 3 exp. 82
2nd engineer platoon 2 lt. Scherer kills 7 exp. 85
3rd engineer platoon 2 lt. Junger kills 9 exp. 89
1st artillery sec. 88 AT 2 lt. Stoltz kills 4 exp. 80
2nd artillery sec. 150 sig 2 lt. Funck kills 4 exp. 74
1st cs platoon (pz ivc) 1 lt. Hartueb kills 7 exp. 83
1st med pz platoon(pziiie) 1 lt. Tost kills 5 exp. 85
2nd med pz platoon(pziiie) 1 lt. Teiner kills 6 exp. 85

Next up is Russia (Lwow), 6/41 delay mission, the pz ivc ‘s are upgraded to pz ive’s and 1st med pz platoon gets pziiih’s.

Two easy missions today; 6/41 (Lwow) delay the soviet forces and 8/41 (Smolensk) advance on the Soviet forces.

6/41 (Lwow) Russia mission 1 delay; weather clear (vis. 42). I find these missions the easiest, certainly with high visibility, i can built a nice def. line with overlapping field of fire. The only remarkable thing in this mission is a soviet t34 taking over 8 hits and no damage (and a very calm crew). It ends in a DV, i have no losses, the soviet lose 296 men and 33 afv’s.

8/41 (Smolensk) Russia mission 2 advance (soviet counter- attack), the weather is clear (vis 42). A fairly standard map hill in the centre, forest on the north side of the map, a small strip of forest running along the south side. 5 Objectives, 1 one the German side, 1 near my attack-line, 2 just over the hill and 1 near the soviet line. Both sides will have to travel some distance to the battle field, i have open field to advance trough, the soviets have forest. Two of my eng. plt will take care of the north forest travelling the first leg by half-track and second leg by foot (i expect to find tanks in the forest, half-tracks only make easy targets. The other eng platoon wil do the same on the south. My tank platoons will make a run for the hill, either parking on top (slow soviet advance) or just under the top of the hill (fast soviet advance). My hq and support will head for the nearest objective and then park just behind the hill, my 88at en sig’s will also head for the hill.

The Soviets advance slow and are just leaving the forest on the east when i park my first tanks on the hill, the 88’s and sig’s soon join them. This turns out to be a sharp shooting contest between the towed guns and the tanks. The guns outperform the tanks, with (surprise?) the sig33 150mm winning the competition. In the forest my eng also kill soviet tanks with ease. In the aftermath, mopping up the few so inf. My hq finally gets a chance to make some easy kills (4)...

An other DV; i lose 13 men, the soviet lose 681 men and 54 afv’s. I upgrade the mmg sq int the three eng. platoons for ss 34 hmg sq (though i have no clue if the are any better or worse).

HQ Col. Ziegler kills 4 exp. 93
1st engineer platoon 2 lt. Riedmuller kills 3 exp. 84
2nd engineer platoon 2 lt. Scherer kills 7 exp. 87
3rd engineer platoon 2 lt. Junger kills 11 exp. 90
1st artillery sec. 88 AT 2 lt. Stoltz kills 16 exp. 95
2nd artillery sec. 150 sig 2 lt. Funck kills 12 exp. 89
1st cs platoon (pz ive) 1 lt. Hartueb kills 20 exp. 93
1st med pz platoon(pziiih) 1 lt. Tost kills 12 exp. 96
2nd med pz platoon(pziiih) 1 lt. Teiner kills 13 exp. 90

Both sgt. Weis (88at) and sgt. Schwendt (pz iiih) perform outstanding; 22 resp. 24 kills.

Next up is the second Smolensk mission (8/41), advance, its a clear night (vis. 6)

Hello and welcome to a great community of wargamers.

If you want the continuity of a campaign with the mission quality of an authored scenerio, check out the MegaCampaigns. I own all three, but am currently focused on WatchTower. Besides the ability to guide a preselected but entirely historic core force, there is a lot of historical information included with the games.

You can look for my WatchTower AAR which I append as time permits.

Government organization/management? Good luck!;)

For now the wwII campaign, small scenarios and campaigns will have to do.

I will keep an eye out for your AAR :)

Welcome to the wonderful world of Matrix games and forums! I guess the only advice I can give regarding infantry is surpress, surpress, surpress! Marching infantry into battle against unsurpressed enemy units can be a recipe for disaster. (Spoken from hard experience.) :D

8/41 later that month (SmolenskII) Russia mission 3 advance (soviet counter- attack), a clear night (vis. 6). A small map, 5 objectives 1 east, 1 west, 3 in the centre. The neutral objective is behind my lines, our objective and the soviet objective is on neutral ground. In the north 1 eng. plt. and the cs-tank platoon are set to take/guard the objective. In the centre my forces are concentrated; 2 eng. plt’s and 2 tank destroyer (well medium tanks :D) platoons. The southern objective is largely unguarded, there is a scout stationed in the south to keep track of enemy movement. My other scout is on the north end of my central force. The hq and his two eng. units form the reserve force.

T1: our forces start almost facing each other. My centre force gets the chance to shoot some tanks and infantry. They also discover a blind spot between the centre en northern forces; the two reserve eng. sq are called in to guard this position.

T2: my central force is now facing a large soviet force, mainly tanks. In the south some soviet tanks try to sneak past my force, in the north there is no movement. I order one of my central tank platoons south, after they took their shots at the central soviet force. My two northern platoons are given orders to advance to the east and south.

T3-8: north of the centre the opposition is forced back without much resistance, in the south is a fierce shoot-out between tanks, i lose 2 pz iiih’s but manage to rescue 1 crew. The soviets are driven back and its time to take the final objective.

T9: The soviet force is broken, and their foot-mortar squats provide easy targets.

An other DV, mainly because the soviets didn’t shoot at me :D.

I lose 20 men and 2 AFV’s, the soviet lose 441 men, 21 artillery and 53 AFV’s.

Next up is North Africa (9/41 Bardia) against the British, mission is advance, early morning, and hazy (vis. 6)

HQ Col. Ziegler kills 4 exp. 94
1st engineer platoon 2 lt. Riedmuller kills 6 exp. 88
2nd engineer platoon 2 lt. Scherer kills 8 exp. 90
3rd engineer platoon 2 lt. Junger kills 14exp. 92
1st artillery sec. 88 AT 2 lt. Stoltz kills 20exp. 97
2nd artillery sec. 150 sig 2 lt. Funck kills 12exp. 90
1st cs platoon (pz ive) 1 lt. Hartueb kills 22exp. 93
1st med pz platoon(pziiih) 1 lt. Tost kills 19exp. 99
2nd med pz platoon(pziiih) 1 lt. Teiner kills 22exp. 94

9/41 North-Africa (British) Bardia, early morning, hazy (vis 6), advance. The British have a delay mission. The map has 5 objectives, 3 just behind the lines and 2 far to the east. I concentrate my main force on the south side, hoping to take the southern objective easy. From there i will head north, hoping to bypass most of the British line (and those dreadful 40 mm AA’s that were excellent tank killers last time i met them).

Turn1: My engineers rush east in the south and meet a br. Rifle platoon. Soon al the br. are running for their life. There seem to be no other opposition near.

Turn2: a second br rifle platoon is wiped out. We secure the first objective, there also is a small fire exchange with 3 Mk Vib’s and 2 2pdr’s.

Turn 3: The mk VIb’s are destroyed as a br rifle section further north. We spot an other Mk VIb and a 20 mm AA near the 2nd objective. I order a platoon of pz iiih to the eastern objectives, i don’t expect any resistant (low value victory hex).

Turn 4: the engineers take out the two 2pdr’s and the 20 mm AA Gun, a Mk VIb is also destroyed. The second objective is now clear from enemies. The first objective in the east is also taken. We spot a br rifle sec. a MK VIb and a 40mm AA up north.

Turn5: We take out a br rifle platoon and a MK Vib, and we keep push north. Next up are to 40 mm AA guns that have to be cleared. The second objective is now in German hands.

Turn6: 2nd objective in the east is taken by the pz iiih’s. The other troops move in position.

Turn7: The first 40 mm AA is destroyed, losing 5 men. The tanks destroy some br rifle squats.

Turn 8: The other 40 mm AA is destroyed, two platoons (gave the a scare with the tanks :D) are routed or destroyed. We lose 1 engineer squat. The final objective is taken.

Turn 9-10: some br rifle sq. try to take the most northern objective back, they fail. The br hq unit barely survives as they storm west and are spotted by a tank.

Again a DV, we lose 52 men, 3 apc’s and 1 afv. The British lose 478 men, 6 afv’s and 14 artillery.

11/41 Tula (russia) mission assault (vis 5). 5 objectives 3 on the n-s line two to the east. (i played it last night, had been studying all day and didn’t like the idea to have to play an assault) i just use 2 engineer platoons, med tank platoon and a cs tank platoon. Main attack ( :D ) in the south, we meet one platoon inf. they kill some men but are soon destroyed or on the run. Their second line consisted out of a few AA guns and mortar squats. They are destroyed with minor effort. In the north is use my cs platoon to advance, they meet one inf squat and make easy progress. We take all objectives (turn 7 or 8), there is little resistance from the SO forces. The mission now becomes defend :D, since So morale isn’t broken yet. By turn 10 its over. A DV, we lose 41 men, 3 apc’s and 1 afv. The SO forces lose 248 men, 10 art. And 3 afv’s

Next up is the second Tula mission advance (12/41 vis 47) a clear winter day, the SO has a counter attack mission.

I seem to skipped the AAR of Rzhev

10/41 Rzhev (russia), advance SO counterattack its a clear winter day. There is forest in the north, a hill in the centre with clear lower hills to the east and west. There are 5 objectives, one east one west, three on the centra N-S line, the northern one is in the forest, the other two just beyond the large hill. No real plan this time just a plain head on meeting and i hope to be the first on the hill.

T2 we meet and spot around 28 enemy tanks, the closesed is a t-34 (only) 11 hex’s away.

T4-5 the SO take the northern (forest) and central objective. The northern objective is soon taken back by my engineers.

T9 SO force is broken, T14 DV, body count, we lose 37 men, the SO lose 492 men and 51 afv’s

The platoon leader stats after the first Tula mission (see previous) are:

HQ Col. Ziegler kills 4 exp. 95
1st engineer platoon 2 lt. Falkenberg kills 16 exp. 93
2nd engineer platoon 2 lt. Scherer kills 11 exp. 92
3rd engineer platoon 2 lt. Junger kills 22 exp. 96
1st artillery sec. 88 AT 2 lt. Stoltz kills 25 exp. 100
2nd artillery sec. 150 sig 2 lt. Funck kills 12 exp. 91
1st cs platoon (pz ive) 1 lt. Hartueb kills 23 exp. 95
1st med pz platoon(pziiih) 1 lt. Tost kills 22 exp. 103
2nd med pz platoon(pziiih)1 lt. Teiner kills 28 exp. 98

Btw can someone explain the rank system used by SPWAW; it seems my units make promotion, and the icon used is chanced but the rank (in the right upper corner of the stats screen) doesn’t seem to change.
