Yup, it was AI-vs-AI. Here's the same game, converted to human vs human, and moved a little to the left. Undetected units are not shown, a few TFs and land units that have been spotted do appear (this is from the allied perspective).

The new screens are excellent. I do like what you have done to submarine warfare. Very nice improvements indeed!

I really like the new fog of war!!!!  This is going to make for a very exciting game with lots of suprises!

Will mine fields have more of an effect on subs?

Theres a white dot on the map in China, find Foochow then go north to the allied first unit, the dot is just to the northeast on the road.

That map is stunning.  Waiting is difficult.  I am going to be off work till at least November, so I have a lot of time to play now, making waiting even more difficult.  I am hoping for an Origins release.

I'm with Rockmedic.

Andrew, from what I can see in these screenshots you have done a superb job with that new map.

Superb!

Note that the AI now defensively mines it's own ports. Those of you that are used to playing against the AI need to tread more carefully in AE.

Again, this is VERY encouraging. I was just a tad concerned that all these wonderful new options would leave the AI more befuddled than ever. But I should have known better than to doubt you guys!

And, one last one (for now). This one might be popular - Task Force naming.

Most important AE feature for me! :)

Editor Screen Questions

1. What is an Attack Bomber?

2. What is an amphinian?

3. Can non fighter float planes now conduct cap missions?

4. The SBD shows a crew of one, it had two!

5. Serivce Rating affected by suppiles, distances from HQ, experince of base force?

1): An Attack Bomber is a light or medium bomber with a nose full of machine guns or cannon. Think of later marks of Mitchell or the Invader.

2): An amphibian is a flying boat with wheeled undercarriage, which will take advantage of Size 1+ airfields instead of staying in the water.

3): Yes.

4): As I said before, it's still a work in progress.

5): Not sure, not being an Air Team member. I would think so, though.

The dot's not white, but Chinese. It's a dot base.

Sub patrol "zones" means I will never again allow the computer to operate my pig boats.(I suspect more people will be purchasing books like Clay Blair's SILENT VICTORY to get more educated on sub tactics and doctrine...This has got to make Ron happy.

"Group Halsey", etc, is now possible!..Excellent..

Different maneuverability ratings dependent on altitude? Finally the F4F gets its' wings!

OMG that's wonderful Don! Now we'll be able to put notes there saying what the TF is doing.

Edit: Will the enemy be able to see the description?

Why not. It is aware of range, will find the best operation base for short range boats or else assign them to defensive patrols. All AI generated sub patrols use patrol zones.

I was not aware that is possible. Best we can hope for is a pitch change in the whine.

Though the mining looks good at first, the AI is mining homeland bases on 21 December 1941. If mines deteriorate over time, then is this not a waste of supplies?

Well, there ARE such things as minefield tenders nowadays, so... no, not always.

I'm not exactly sure the AI would know when to mine it's own ports. After all, there are mines at larger ports when the war began. And the AI does not continue mining forever. Once ports get to a certain level, it stops.

Minefield Tenders can preserve the mines, and the AI can lay more if necessary.

I think that is about the best that can be done, but I am always open to better ideas.

But remember, this is the AI we are talking about. Better ideas must be defined in precise detail.

Japan

Defense
I think mining of foward bases for defense makes more sense until mid 1944 or until the allied air umbrella makes it too costly to try. Just like Japan expands and contracts so should mining.  Try to mine bases that are in range/danger of allied naval bombardment.

Offense
Sub minning of nearest major allied ports and forward allied bases. Mining should always be done by night like bombardment missions.

Allies  Offense & Defense
Just mine forward bases, it not like Japan is going to bombard PH or the east cost after 1941. If even if they do, mines won't be their only problem.

I only hope mines have more effect on subs and mines don't sink more friendlies then enemy.

Never effect subs? or never seen friendly mines sink your own ships?

I've seen both, but your post implied that mines sink more friendly ships than enemy ones, which is wrong in every way.
