Invading Iwo, and I have LCU's holding a beach head. A CV group is off the coast one hex, and I hold Bonin Island also with some fighters and search assets. I see this report come in about 4 or 5 groups of transports of various kinds are intercepted coming north to IWO. But no details on what is happening. Are they completely wiped out? Or partially, or just turn back? Anyone have a clue on how to verify this intercept and what the result was? It has happened 3 turns straight so I'm guessing it is a turned back approach..? But the Jap LCU's are seeming to get stronger...

Your opponent has established an air-bridge to reinforce the base. Your leaking CAP is intercepting and shooting down some of those transport planes. Putting CAP/LRCAP over the base will hopefully shoot down a few more.
Check the air losses info screen for how many transport a/c you are destroying in A2A combat.

Yes he's reinforcing alright. I believe he brought in the 1st Yokosuka Ambhib Battalion, along with supply and maybe some arty. I checked the aircraft losses page in Intel and it shows Zero a2a kills on the Tina, Tabby's and Thora's. So I'm intercepting but thier getting through anyways. I altered my altitudes on one of three Fighter groups over Iwo atm. I have 14000, 13000, and 9000. I fly mine at generally 5-6k, so maybe drop them another 2k..?
Heck if know how else to stop them. I have three AA groups included on my beach head also, but no reports of them shooting down anything.

I caught a screen of them coming in. looks to be four groups of diff sorts and shows the intercept msg. Can anyone advise on how to stop these guys?

Nothing is working that I've tried. lol

The screenies look to be resized. Sorry they are a bit small.

My guess would be that their morale drops considerably with every interception, so keep up the CAP.

Also check the altitude setting of the japanese transports. Your opponent might come in at maximum height which means less time for your CAP to intercept as they would have to gain heigth first. For intercept it's always better to come from above so maybe set one group close to the enemies height maximum or even 2k above. But then maybe your fighters cannot operate that high, so you need to check the planes stats.

It's very difficult to actually stop air transport missions in WitP.  You can LRCAP the base, and you'll get more, but for whatever reason, most transports (about 90% or more) will get thru.  I'm not saying that's the way it should be, I'm just saying that's the way it is.

No matter WHAT height the transports come in at, they can still be intercepted (even if above the max altitude of the defending fighters)... however, a mismatch in the transport's and fighter's altitudes will decrease interceptions (and shootdowns).

Ok, I see then that there is little to do but fish for thier altitudes. Thankyou for your answers to my post.
Also, Mismatz I am getting that strange intercept pop-up you see in the screenshots. Very odd indeed. And like I was saying, there isn't any actual air combat per say, only the vague notice that the transports were intercepted.
I'll keep at them. Thanks again fella's for letting me know the options available.

On the other hand, it is not possible to escort transports. Hopefully things change in AE...

This is "as designed" (dubvious as it is).  The air transport phase is -after- the AM/PM phase, when sweeps and strikes take place.  You will never see an air-combat screen with transports vs. fighters.  All you will ever see is the messages.  But as pointed out, you can't "escort" air transport, because they're not a "strike".

If you own the transports:
Sweep target hex with your own fighters to break up enemy CAP/LRCAP.

If you're defending vs. transports:
CAP or LRCAP the target hex to damage enemy transports.
Sweep won't help you.

Also, it is possible to intercept transports en-route to their destination.  If their path happens to pass over a hex that is CAP'd or proximity CAP (leaking from nearby base), you can also damage transports (but obviously this instance is rare, but I have seen it).

Haha, good info there also Feinder. I know his route, and am positioning 2 CV groups just south of Iwo. Besides the Ground strikes, they're location demands a heavy cap for defense, and will be able to intercept more transports flying over thier position. :)
