Just discovered the wonderful world of SPWaW and I can't believe it took me this long to find this incredible game. Well, now I am trying to make my way through the various uprgades and the the thick instruction manual and I have 1 question (so far):

I have upgraded from v5.01 to v5.2 and now to vs 6.1 (with the ultimate goal of reaching v7.1) however, my introductory screen in the game still reads v5.2. I have read in the post that there is an issue with vs 7.1 upgrade but nothing is mentioned regarding upgrading from 5.2 to 6.1. Has anyone else had this issue? If so some suggestion's around this so that I can get to vs 7.1 would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, for this long winded post but this game has had so many upgrades (took the better part of yesterday to get where I am today).

TKS for reading this far down :) and any help would be greatly appreciated

R

Pay attention at the route indicated as default when unpacking the installing file; sometimes it doesn't correspond to the route you have yr earlier spwaw version in and instead of having the old files overwritten and the new version(only) installed, you have two(or more) directories nested one in the other with different builds of the game inside each one.
Maybe somebody else will be clearer than me in explaining it :)

Nested folders are almost always the culprit.

However: It all depends upon how the zip file is set up. If paths are utilized (you can see them at the far right of the columns in WinZip 8.1) and the user directs the unzipping operation to wrong starting directory, the result will be a nice patch all by itself in a created directory having nothing to do with WAW.

ID: Check the date of the mech.exe in the patch file - compare it to the date of the mech.exe in the WAW dir. If the mech.exe date is still the old one, you got a spurious or incomplete install. Start looking for a rogue or nested directory. I've done it, most of us have.

I don't copy files over on a version update - see the sticky above - there is too much going on. I do away with the rogue and start the patching over again, in the correct directory.

Thank you both for your quick replies. I have chkd for duplicate/bogus directories and none appear to exist. I also chkd the date on the mech.exe file in the game folder and it's yesterday's date (date I originally installed the complete program). I tried re-installing the patch today but no success. The patch is an .exe file dowloaded from The Armor Site (spwaw 6.1 full version 400+MB) which is comprised of 3 separate zip files.

Is there any other way for finding a nested folder that I may be overlooking? - I tried manually looking for a directory through my directory tree and also using "find file" command. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails I will have to content myself with v5.2 (greatly enjoying it - much to learn still). Am I missing a lot by not being able to get up to 7.1?

Cheers:)

Yes, you are going to miss a lot if you don't upgrade to 7.1 - namely most of the current scenarios and campaigns.

If you have changed a mech.exe and did not delete steel.prf (in the Save folder) and re-enter your preferences, then do so now.

If you change anything like a mech.exe and forget or fail to reboot your system - for shame.

Sure - there is always a way in Windows to find a duplicate entry. Open the Find applet. Enter the file name in question - use * at beginning and end of file name - lots of the time I don't use a file extension, just the *. Sweep the entire hard drive, with the CPU most of us use, should take only a few seconds. I have 15,000 files on miy HD and a complete sweep takes maybe 20 seconds.

While on the other hand I have several directories that have over 15000 files each, a search on my 40 gig hard drive takes minutes, a defrag can take 1/2 a day.
thanks, John.

Hi svhrg,

First of all, welcome aboard! You are in for allot of fun and the people here at the Matrix forums are a great bunch!

What you might have to do if all else fails is to uninstall the game, reboot your system, and then re-install. :) Make sure that you re-boot after every step, that is each time you install either the game or the update files, re-boot each time. I know that the default of the installs says that it must re-boot the computer, some of the later upgrades, I can't remember which, do not. So always re-boot!

I know that this is a pain in the ***, as the files for the original game (5.02) take a wile to de-compress and install, but you might be better off with doing a clean install. Maybe someone else here will have a better and faster way of fixing your problem, so I will defer to them, but if not, go with a clean install.

Again, welcome aboard soldier!

John

Thank you all for the advice. Unfortunately, I have tried and re-tried to solve this issue and I'm still on V5.2 (chk'd for dup dir, conf'd win zip dest folder and install dest). I think I will go ahead with John David's suggestion and start fresh. I might wait until the 7.1 complete game file is available (as hinted at the bottom of the SPWaW product page under downloads) which will hopefully be soon. Meanwhile, I have a lot of learning ahead of me for which I'm sure v5.2 will do just fine. TKS again

Cheers

thanks, John. [/B][/QUOTE]

I was wrong: I have 26,000+ files and the search takes just a few seconds. What can I say?

Unless I missed it, you didn't way which OS you are using. Win98SE for me. P3 1.0 Ghz - 512 Meg RAM - 7200 rpm WD 40 Gig HD.

Nothing running in background. Nothing. MS Defrag is very slow - and will eventually get the user. I switched to Diskeeper 7.0 - we make our choices in these matters, I think it is worth every penny. MS defrag used to take 5+ hours on my P2 450, with only about 5 Gigs. Slow HD. 128 Megs RAM. 20 Gig defrag now takes maybe five minutes, usually less.

svhrg,
Welcome to the best wargame around. You don't have your location listed. If you are in the States, you can probably get someone to send you a CD with the files and upgrades on it. We have done this a lot in the past when the files were so big, it took some of us several nights to download the game.

If I read your post right, you have downloaded the full 6.1 version. If so, you don't need to install the earlier versions. Remove the 5.X versions from the hard drive and install the 6.1 version. Just don't give up, you'll get there.:D
