Scenario Orders - 5/30/2008 1:07:28 AM

I have a question about the Orders in some Scenarios. I was giving a try to the 'surprise, surprise' scenario out of the HDS8 battleset in the standard scenarios. It's one of the missions where part of the orders is to not attack until fired upon. Since the AI player is always going to attack once he is ready to, do you follow that rule and hold back, or go ahead and setup and attack??
On this particular scenario, I could have attacked with Harpoons from my flight of bombers, but waited because red had not fired on blue yet. For my patience I was rewarded with losing an AWACS plane because that's what he got in range with first. Kind of expensive. The only good news is that there were more E-3s at Diego Garcia.
So are some rules (orders) made to be broken ?? Shoot first and ask questions later?

I always try to follow the orders as strictly as possible. I just like to give myself the biggest challenge.

I just played that scenario and lost a Sentry the same way you did. There wasn't much else I could do except draw fire with the AWACS.

I also try and follow the scenario author's instructions in the Orders. He may have good reason for trying to place certain restrictions on the player for the purposes of the scenario, whether that be ROE (rules of engagement) or other things like not changing loadouts (to reflect limited inventory or logistics issues).

Yes, yes. Follow the Rules of Engagement. You have your Orders, Commander. And all that...

BUT, it's not fair, he whined. I KNOW he's going to attack. He always does. They don't wait for us to shoot first......

It is kind of annoying in this scenario with a lack of cover with fighter planes. It forces an unpleasant decision. Of getting something in range for Red to shoot at that can't shoot back. Or to reveal our meager fighter cover of Harriers on the Northern groups of ships that we don't want Red to find. Herman made a similar decision - while following the ROE - and ended up sacrificing the E-3. Just part of the challenge, I guess.

In the past, you could close with the E-3 and allow the AI to make the shot at Max range before running home and still surviving. However, with the new God****, no good, sonuvagun, 'cheating' AI, he won't take the shot until you are within about 80% of his missile's max range. There's no way the lumbering E-3 can escape that. Fighters with higher Maximum speeds or Afterburner can survive, but not the E-3.

Notice that I did NOT offer to put the precious bombers in range of the AAMs. That I had a short distance away. Was not going to give up a signficant part of my B-52 forces.
I did complete my run-thru of this scenario and was awarded victory after sinking a 2nd carrier. It was expensive though as Red found the smallest of the 3 groups of ships - while it had no Harrier air cover. Lots of missiles were launched and 5 of the ships in that group were sunk.
If I played it again, might try a few different choices. Which is second-guessing, but that's part of the challenge of what Harpoon allows
