It's 2/42, CHS 155 vs. the AI.

Naga has changed hands a couple of times. I drove off the initial attack then withdrew when the AI landed the 16th Division. Then it took the 16th by sea to Lamon Bay, so I returned to Naga with 2nd Constabulary Div, 4th Marine Rgt, 57th PS RCT, and 301st Prov FA Rgt, driving off the Jap artillery unit there. A few days later, the 16th landed again--with disastrous consequences.

Any idea why so many guns fired? I have about 25 155mm Howitzers and 8 37mm AT guns. No CD guns.

Note, this image is from the replay. The original run had about 2500 guns firing, with even more hits to his ships and troops.

The report shows the number of shots, not the number of guns.
2500 shots means that your artillery had 100 shots per gun (155 mm Howitzers only).
Not unreasonably for a whole day I think.

Seems a little excessive considering what guns you have. The only other thing that I can think of is the Div didn't have many prep points. Supposedly the more you have the more effective a landing will be and few losses. Its a guess.

Not excessive: if you have 25 x 155mm, and 8 x 37 mm, that works out to about 2.5 rounds per gun per hour... but i'll wager there are also mortars present, which i think are also counted in the total.

Stuff like this can only happen if the defenders have relatively good supply, and their troops are NOT disrupted and/or disabled.

The way the game is modelled, not all guns fire (apparently), so probably some guns fire at 20 rounds/hour, many others are silent.

Landing on a beach where the defenders are waiting was a rough experience (as both sides found out)... several Japanese landings during the war were wiped out (Wake, and a few in Bataan), and several others came very close to failing.

I was refering to the damage to the ships but if you take the two together thats some shooting.

Around 121 hits out of 1941 shots is 6.2% - not bad, but not out of line, i think.

WW-1 BB/BCs maneuvering at high speed and shooting at exceptional ranges (18K+ yards) were getting 2-5% hits, but much of the degradation of their shooting came from vibration at high speed affecting their rangefinders... land units in prepared positions didn't have this drawback, and would often have preregistered fire, not to mention ground spotters to call in corrections.

IIRC, the Japanese on Bataan were dismayed to find almost every inch of the peninsula in range of Allied artillery was preregistered from years of practice maneuvers. Eventually, the gunners ran low on ammo, though...

The damage to the vessels is consistent with the damage that the guns firing could inflict... at least the heavy caliber ones. The 37mm could wreak havoc on any smaller ship such as a PG or anything attempting a landing, but the real might in that defense is of course the 155s. Not as much explosive as a 6" naval gun but still a huge bursting charge to set off anywhere, much less in the confined space of a compartment on an unarmored ship.
